As a respectful fan of Haywood I would go with Stevenson. The guy is still getting better. Haywood and Mason are about the same as previous years given the minutes played. Of course there are obvious improvements in their games

Well, this season I've been impressed by the entire team...espesially playing without Gil. Although somewhat inconsistant, Roger, Darius, Andray, Nick, and Dom, have all impressed me coming off the bench. I was shocked at the beginning of the season to find that Brendan Heywood had been re-signed, but he really has improved his game all around this season and while I have always loved DeShawn Stevenson and his "I can feel my face" deal, I was also surprised to see him back. So my two surprise players for this season would have to be Haywood and Stevenson, both whom have made huge contributions both offensively and defensively.

My answer would have to be Brendan, He has worked so hard and you can see the improvements he plays great on both end of the floor. I am also liking Antawns game this season, don't get me wrong he has always been good but he has made a commitment on the defence that was missing last season and his rebounding is awesome. Out of the young guys I am impressed with Dom, he has not played alot nor scored alot but he gets hussle points from me and I think with some work on his shot and better decision making with the ball he is going to be a great role player for this team.

I agree that Roger's play (especially w/ the Seattle game fresh in our memories) makes him the chief candidate for our surprise player. I agree too that re-signing DeShawn has worked out quite well, so maybe he is also a surprise -- although he is playing this year more or less the same way he played last year.

But... in a way, there is another surprise player on the Wizards. And that is Antawn Jamison. Especially in the 2d half of the season, he is playing out of this world! Way beyond what anyone expected from him.

I think most of us expected a slight decline in his play this year. He'll turn 32 in June. Instead, there's been a decided uptick. His shooting % is slightly down, but he's had to carry the team offensively and so has had to shoot more. Moreover, his rebounds are up, his steals are up, his fouls are down, his turnovers are down. Antawn is having a great season.

AJ -- my Wizards surprise!

Hm...biggest surprise for me is/was haywood i think - he really improved his play this season! I really thought what we lacked most was a big C - but not 'nymore!

And...YES! Wizards coming to Germany, man i gotta see them in Berlin against NOH this october! Still about 1000km away from here, but...from all the teams of the nba, the wiz are coming to germany - hell yeah! =)

I'm all over Roger...just been waiting for him to "make it rain"! He's on his way to the foreground...can somebody keep him on the floor when he heats up? No, he's not The Microwave...yet, but, he's got an excellent foundation and is building. The Wizards have something in Roger...USE HIM!!!

Roger is a huge surprise to all of us. He first selected Washington over San Antonio which took me for a loop, now he is paying huge dividends with his tenacity and offensive prowlness. I definitely have to say Haywood with his consistency with freethrows and defensive tenacity and then Roger with his cool quiet assasin like demeanor. So I would say Haywood because he gets more minutes on a nightly basis and that gives him more chances to affect the games outcome!

This is a terrific off-day question!

I agree with wiz-skins07. My vote for the most surprising player goes to Haywood. The fact that he is even on the team after the way things ended for him last year is a big surprise in itself. Couple that with how he has raised his game a level, improved his free throw shooting, made himself stronger. He really is one of the reasons the Wiz are better this year than last year. He overmatches most centers physically

That being said, Roger Mason is certainly a huge surprise. Who knew that he would be the most consistant player off the bench. And last night he had his signature game of the year. His play in the Fourth quarter was simply spectacular! He turned that game completetely around for the Wiz. And his defense is always strong. What are the plans to re-sign Roger at the end of the year?
