Game Day Pistons
9:59 AM …Dave Johnson checking in…here we go another road game….well it only feels like a road game…two games last week in Florida and then this brief stop home and then five on the road…..that’s March Madness….but it sure feels good sitting two games above .500…..but before the flight Monday AM to Portland the challenge  is the Pistons….and it will be a big challenge….It is encouraging that Caron Butler had such a big night on Friday and he told us after the game he is feeling better and starting to get his legs back…we could tell in the pre-game that he was shooting much better…also worth noting…Eastern Conference Player of the Week, Wizards forward Antawn Jamison is a front-runner for Player of the Month considerations as well. In a 7-3 month for the Wizards so far, Jamison has averaged 25.6 points and 10.0 rebounds per game, and has connected at a .474 clip from the field, including a .404 rate from three-point range….and…..Having guided Washington to a 29-21 record in his 50 games started this season, Wizards point guard Antonio Daniels will start his career-high 51st game of the season tonight. Previously, Daniels started 50 games in Vancouver as a rookie in 1997-98, which marked a career-high until now. Remember BLOGCAST starts at 8…hope you can join us ……
7:42…Gilbert Arenas update……Gilbert really wanted to play tonight but was not cleared by the medical staff to go this evening..he did leave the locker room disappointed…but you have to believe the doctors want to be sure before he is given a green light..so in one sense it is encouraging that it seems we are this close to getting Gil back……but still not sure what this means for the road trip.

Hell no I called this the other day wiz-skins07!! But still if he plays tonight he’ll only play a couple minutes I guess.
Still tonight game’s huge, we always play the pistons well (maybe not so far this season) and I hope we’ll be able to contain good old Jarvis tonight. If Butler feels it and ‘Tawn keeps on doing his thing we may have a shot.

I would like to be the first to say that you Jarvis Hayes you are definitely filling your reserve role fabulously in Detroit! I should have known you would excel once you changed location.However from my Wizards point of view we have alot going for us because we are getting healthy finally! The focus tonight is team intensity and making everyone work for every shot attempted! I feel confident we can prevail if everyone stays on the same page offensively and defensively! I would like to see the bench score 50 and defend well with efficiency! Good Luck!

I have a feeling you are right. He didn’t rule out playing today and he did mention comming back before the end of this week. Maybe he could have played friday versus Miami, but there was no need so he saved himself for tonight. We all know Gil loves the fans and the fact that this is our last homegame for awhile leads me to believe tonight will be the night. Wouldn’t that be great?
As you said, these next few games are must-wins. We’re in the fifth spot right now and if we stay in that spot, we’re playing a Cleveland team that I believe is VERY beatable by a healthy big three and an amazing bench.

this is not only a must win game. this is a statement game. teams must take us seriously. like legler said the other night, every team must be concerned about the wizards. they are contenders without gil. just imagine what they will do with him. beating detroit will soldify the saying especially when gil gets back “Ready to Rule” chauncy is their fourth quarter guy, but they look to hamilton and rasheed the first three quaters. we believe our bench is good, well they believe they have the best bench, so it is a battle of the benches. It personally wouldn’t surprise me if we saw Gil surprise us and play tonight, even if it’s for only a little bit. That’s just the Gil that we all know and love. It also helps that it’s televised nationally from the Verizon Center.

Coach just spoke, no go for Gil and Nick tonight. Gil went through shootaround, but was not medically cleared yet. He really really wants to get out there, but it sounds like it’s going to be a little while longer.
Nick has a thigh bruise that just hasn’t completely healed yet.

Gilbert practiced in shootaround this morning, and later in the day spoke with doctors on whether or not he will be cleared to play. According to the washington post, tonight would make sense because its the last home game for a while and he would have all day tomorrow to see how his knee reacts. Not to mention it would be a very Gilbert thing to do to make a big appearance on ESPN… and then shoot a lot to prove he’s OK

A little off-topic, but I vaguely remember Gil blogging about when he was rehabbing in the summer his trainer told him he was pushing it too hard(risking re-injury), but he disagreed so he fired that trainer. In light of what happened this season, did Gil ever consider re-hiring that trainer?

I’m feeling 50 percent better. I’m halfway there, halfway back to Agent Zero. I’m just ‘Agent’ right now. I can walk, ride the bike and I can shoot jump shots (just don’t tell the trainers that). I go in to train at about 12 o’clock and work on my upper body, my basketball stuff and cardio, and then I go back in at night from about 7:00 p.m. until 10 and I work on more cardio and I work on my legs. So I get about three hours of that and do balance work.
It’s different. I’m hesitant. The trainer, I had to fire him and kick him to the curb. We’re beefin’ right now. You know, I’ve never done this before. Me and trainers, it’s usually just like, ‘OK, get my ice.’ So all these drills he’s telling me to do, for some reason I just think they’re stupid. So I just fired him. I told him when I come to the facility to just pretend like I’m in California, even though I’m here. My body is here, mentally I’m in California, so I’ll just see you in training camp ‘ I don’t think he liked that very much.”
Man too bad he didn’t listen to his trainer, but I guess hindsight is 20/20

no trainer was ever fired…he is anxious…but needless to say i think it is case whwre they wnat to be sure…gil even said last week that he was nervous becasue he had an mri in november that showed he was okay but then he had to have surgery

I disagree with gil, the player will always want to play regardless if they are hurt or not. It is up to the doctors to make the call.

This is the best I’ve seen the wizards play in a long time. They’re finding the holes in the defense and taking advantage of the Piston’s mistakes. Hopefully they can keep it up. Go Wizards!

Great first half, but if we’re going 2 win, we’re going 2 have 2 match the intensity of the pistons in the 2nd half. I’m pretty sure the pistons are going 2 bring it, but if brendan continues playing like he did in the first half and we can match up with their intensity, we can pull out a win! Jason Maxiell has impressed me throughout this season. He’s their new Ben Wallace. Plus he’s very athletic and really gets up there for some amazing blocks.

the wizards offensive schemes is unique. it is not flashy, it sort of a motion screen, sort of like utah. but it is the princeton offense of course. but this offense keeps them in games. u cant really tell that the offense is ran by the play maker and the hot shooter. for instance if deshawn is hot he gets his screens. if he is not he is running wing or point. caron, and jamison mix it up with the point and the 2. the center sets screens and rolls

It was a foul on Blatche and a Technical on rasheed – unlike college – technicals are not personal fouls in the nba – so rasheed still has only 3 fouls … though – he should have been tossed

When you consider the terrible lack of production the Wiz got from the bench in the past – all the minutes that Mason, Young, Blatche, DSong, Petch have gotten is a huge bonus for the Wiz … bench production is critical for a run in the playoffs

I’m sorry y’all – I dozed off for a minute and when I got back up things got INTENSE. The Pistons played pretty rough tonight – what the hell is wrong with them? That Sheed technical was funny as hell; he’s so dramatic. I would’ve blogged but I’m kinda tired tonight – sorry. I’ll be blogging next game (if I’m not tipsy – hahaha).
I knew we could win though; we could also win the next game. I love my Wiz.

We dominated everything except for giving up too many offensive rebounds. We committed only 15 fouls the entire game (andray and roger accounted for 7 of them).
Darius played *extremely* well tonight. We look like a tough team right now!

of course we don’t get as much production from the bench, we have many players less than other teams. But the guys we do have are quality players and they are all very productive.

I think the Wizards can take the fourth seed. Despite the upcoming west coast trip I think they have a very good chance.
Why isn’t Eddie Jordan name being mentioned as Coach of the year? With all the injures the Wizards have had this year and be in the position they are, I don’t see why he is not being talked about for guiding this team.

Very Nice Game! We played that one on both ends of the floor. Everyone played with energy. Tom.. I don’t know how many fouls he had in total but I know 2 of Mason’s fouls were smart fouls. Both occured after Detroit had stolen the ball around half court and would have had a clear path “almost”. He also had a block against Rip.
I don’t think the Wizards have had a more solid player than Antawn since Wes played. I don’t think that man could play any harder. He really comes to play every single night. Caron has the hip… then the wrist… then McDyss splits his cheek open with an elbow. And he Wants to play basketball lol. I’m just glad he is on Our Side. Everybody judges Mason by how he shoots. What impresses me most about him is that guy is a very good defender. Songaila is becoming a real master of position around the rim and keeping people away from it. He always seems to make the exact right cut down the lane at the perfect time too of offense. And Pesh is red lol.
Great Win and one that should give us a little West Coast Momentum.

buckeyes90 I’ll take our bench production this year over our bench production the last ohhhh 4 or 5 years. Every year Ernie has made us a better team than the year before. Just think we now have Songaila over Ruffin…. a much better guard rotation… Blatche and McGuire over Booth. I get to the point where I can’t wait to see what Ernie will do next.
Millie Mill very good question. We have a 13 man roster… Etan has been out all season… Gilbert has been out all but 8 games.. and both Caron and Pesh have missed significant games yet we are still in the heat of the playoff race. Eddie should really get some consideration for Coach of the Year!

Seems like ‘Tawn had another big game and Caron too. Blatche seems okay too but Mason seems to have fouled a lot and didn’t shoot so well. Anyway they outrebounded us but we shot better. I didn’t read all your comments but I’m gonna do it soon enough.

LilGil…let me tell you something…
Roger Mason fouled a lot but at least two of those fouls were really smart fouls when the pistons stole the ball and had a two or three on one situation…and yes i know he didnt shoot so well but he made all the CRITICAL shots…he made plays down the strech including a couple of 3′s….his stat sheet may not say it but he had a great night

We have one of the worst benches in the league. But, we have one of the most productive starting fives in the league — and that’s without Gil.
Think about it: if we had terrific starters and a terrific bench, we wouldn’t be 3 games over .500; we’d be 13 games over or something like that.
Our bench is bad largely because 4 of the 6 guys on it (Blatche, Young, Pech and McGuire) are kids and don’t yet have nba games. The other 2 are songaila (who has had a bad year but is playing better now) and mason, who is dependable but not very good.
But, last night both Blatche and Songaila were productive.

this was a good game. great ball movement, no really bad turnovers and shooting over 50%. the wizards are like 11-1 when shooting over 50%. caron and jamison knew they had to come out and play hard to defeat the pistons and they did and had a terrific night. here we come 4th seed. i really hope we can get 4th seed but 5th seed is alright for me. and i hope that our oppenent is the cleveland cavaliers too. they have been our rival forever and beating them is the [B]BEST[/B] feeling

What’s a “critical” basket? Does a point in the 4th quarter count for more in the final score than one in the first quarter?
Basketball is part competition and part entertainment — in the *entertainment* part, emotions make us create these “facts”.

Tom, I just don’t get why you say Mason isn’t very good. Seems to me at this point he’s an excellent back-up guard.
If we play the same way, we’ll win the next three.
And when they get back, maybe we’ll have Gil and Etan back. Then, as far as I’m concerned, the four kids can sit out the rest of the year.

neal — *everyone* in the NBA can play ball. Guys who can’t play ball don’t get into the NBA.
But, if you run the numbers, Roger Mason is a below-average NBA player. Doesn’t mean I don’t like him, or even that I think there’s someone better available for his role. At his salary (and you know how much that counts), you can’t get a better player. Think about it; just about half the players in the NBA are below average players!
If we were to run numbers on productivity per dollar spent, then I think Roger is a bargain. He’ll get a nice pay-day, either from us or another team, in the off-season, and he deserves it.
I posted (well… sportswiz did it for me) links to numbers on our starters and bench in another comment thread. *Every* bench in the NBA is below average in player productivity. Is that really a surprise? Guys on the bench aren’t good enough to start. Duh. (The only exception is San Antonio’s bench — and that’s because Ginobili doesn’t start, an anomaly)

Mason is a GREAT player to me because if he’s not shooting well, he’s defending his a** off. Even if/when that man misses his shots, I still ain’t mad at him – I’m like “that’s cool Mason.” Personally, I don’t give a sh** about fouls; as long as a player isn’t fouling out in the first quarter, I’m cool.
I wouldn’t necessarily say EJ for coach of the year yet (get mad, I don’t care) because part of a coach’s job is to bestow players with their individual role on/for their team. Some of our guys seem kinda confused with their roles. But hey, maybe I’m just really critical because I grew up watching “big Phil” (Jackson – that is). I’m not asking him to be a Phil or something, but I’m just not quite seeing that coach of the year thing yet.
I like Mason and I like Blatche. I want Mason to stay. And Tom, those guys are not kids – these are some grown a** men; just in rook status (with the exception of Blatche).

No matter who you like on the team or don’t like on the team the main thing is they are ALL playing like a team. That is winning us ball games.
With half the NBA players being “below the average” which of course implies that half the players are “above the average”…. I wonder who that “average” guy is? There has to be one player smack in the middle of the curve.
