Game Day Miami
8:25 AM….Dave Johnson checking in …….oh that was fun on Wednesday…..I had a good feeling even when the Wizards were down by 7 at the half becuse I thought we were playing well on defense but just needed to make shots…true to form Antawn Jamison helped the team get jump-started on the offensive end…and how about Caron Butler—playing basically with one hand–going three of 7 from the field in the second half including what turned out to be the game-winning basket….But special credit has to be given to Brendan Haywood…this time against the Magic he stayed out of foul trouble….Dwight Howard ended up in foul trouble…Howard did not make a field goal until the fourth quarter.. and as a result the Wizards had the edge in points in the paint 36-14…it was another quality road win……In fact the Wizards are 6-0 this year on the road against the Southeast Division—–2 wins @Atlanta,2 wins @Charlotte, and 1 win each at Orlando and Miami….and tonight it is the Heat….the Heat are short-handed but beat Milwaukee on the road before losing at home Wednesday to Toronto…bottom line —–just showing up will not be enough…BLOGCAST starts at 7:30…hope you can join us….
7:05 …Dave and Glenn checking in…..starters are in….No Shawn Marion because of a sore back…Jason Williams who like Marion did not play on Wednesday…WILL play..he had jammed his thumb….so we expect..ricky davis..earl barron..mark blount, jason williams and daequan cook….wizards will have daniels, stephenson, haywood, jamison butler..
7:30…We have a Spalding Never Flat winner….Brent Johnson of California, Maryland…the Spalding Never Flat Pack featues a basketball, soccer ball, volleyball, and football…..Brent was one of our random winners..he sent his name and address to wizardspromotions@washsports.com

There wasn’t a set date on when the CT scan would be, at least to my knowledge. I might be able to find out on Sunday, so stay tuned.

2 words for the Heat matchup – TRAP GAME. The Heat scored 54 points with 7 bench players last game and their remaining “good” players, JWill and Marion, rested. I’m pretty sure they’ll suit up tonight.
I believe a good strategy against another team decimated by injuries is to go up-tempo and hopefully build a double-digit lead. It’ll allow the Wiz to rest the starters Jamison, Butler, Stevenson, AD, and Haywood more during the course of the game. Usually, interior defense is very weak when your “good” players are out, so I hope to see the Wiz attack the basket for easy points.
Lastly, I’m sure we’re all watching what Toronto, Philadelphia, Atlanta, New Jersey, and even what the Pacers and Bulls are doing. However, the only team that controls the Wizards’ destiny is Washington. I understand it is important to get a favorable playoff opponent and it is the reason why we’re checking the standings. But, I believe in taking baby steps – (1) lock in a playoff spot without doubt; (2) get a bit healthier with active players and maybe get Gilbert and Etan back; and (3) win some playoff games.

i wonder what is up with Gilbert…he said he might come back today but most liekly next week….if he dresses any way…it would be nice to get that double digit lead like wiz_fusion was saying to see him out there…i know its unlikely he will be out there but still…
I remeber when we used to lose to that Heat every game…i would never look towards these games…but now they are the laughinstock of the NBA…but still..we must play hard…teams always tend to lose(especailly use) to teams like the Heat…
GO WIZARDS….must win game..
P.S…Hope Gilby and Etan come back soon…

I thought 12 straight days of a hard workout from Gil’s docs on Monday means Gil should be back in April. Maybe I’m taking Gil’s words too literal???? I do believe that if everything is good, Gil will play again this season but it’ll be like Game 78+.

I would say that this should be an easy game, but ya just never know what’ll happen. Yeah, they lost bad…BAD, just the other night (I think they only had like 6 players in rotation), but I’m just gonna see what happens…
We COULD get this W though –
As far as I know, I’ll be blogging tonight.

the wizards always seem to lose against these weaker teams. make no mistake about it, the heat dont exactly want to help out a division foe, definitely with the way the wiz came in there last time. davis cant still light it up, marion is marion, dorell wright is an upcoming player, and jason williams is still good. we must take them seriously. their draft pick is already gauranteed lol. ne way im just saying take this team seriously, and every other team, this is the NBA people, anything can, everyone in the NBA are supposed to the worlds best players. we need to win every game from now on. does anyone think theres a chance we could get that center from UCONN????? and as far as the fans opinion what do yall think our biggest needs are that we should focus on this summer? to be honest after i thought about it, we are about the 4th best team in the east with our full arsenal, were just a few pieces from a championship

We need a win tonight because our next few games are going to be tough. I dont think Marion will be playing.
It will be the last game I see for a week and a half(I will be across the ocean).
Hopefully we will see gil play

Hey neal — that’s *my* info and analysis that sportswiz posted about Blatche and Thomas. The blog had blocked my link-packed comment, and he copied its info into a new comment (for which I thank him!!).
The upshot is that Andray Blatche hasn’t become a good player yet. Maybe some day, but not yet. Etan Thomas is a pretty good player, on the other hand.
Now, let it be said that they don’t replace each other. Andray can back up the 3, 4 or 5. Etan can *only* play the 5. If he came back today, I would want him to take minutes from Songaila not Blatche. I would also expect Pecherov to be getting DNPs nearly every game.
Comment from Bridge
Time March 21, 2008 at 2:55 PM
Aside from anything, I think that Blatche is a hell of a player. Watch, he’s going to start producing (to everyone’s fulfillment, since, I guess, to almost the whole world, he’s doing lousy) and when he does this (like D. Song did/is doing), everyone will be praising him as if anything was never said.
I’m not going back and forth about this; my point and only point: He’s a good player. How young a person is has nothing to do with their skill/talent. You need minutes to learn – maybe our bench will get better if they had more minutes. If he need to foul-out everytime to learn then that’s how it should be. Hell, Rodman was in foul trouble like every Bulls games – Phil just knew how to use him; not to imply anything about EJ.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time March 21, 2008 at 3:13 PM
Bridge — I like Andray, and I agree he has a terrific upside. However, for immediate productivity — I like to call them *wins*, more wins — Etan would have been and will be much more productive.
I think he’d mostly take Darius’s minutes, however — not Blatche’s. Darius had a stretch of a few good games earlier this month, that’s true. It seems to be over.
As I’ve said a zillion times, *everyone* in the NBA can play basketball! They don’t let you in otherwise. If you put *better* players on the floor, however, you win more games!
Comment from Bridge
Time March 21, 2008 at 3:35 PM
Well, players can only get “better” with more minutes (which allows them to learn).
Teamwork wins more games in my opinion

I wonder if this will do anything for the Wizards. From ESPN:
MIAMI — Pat Riley is back on the scouting trail.
The Miami Heat coach was studying players in the NCAA tournament on Friday and wasn’t expected to be with the team for its game with the Washington Wizards.
Assistant coach Ron Rothstein filled in when Riley missed a game against Orlando last week while on another scouting trip. Rothstein was handling the game-day coaching responsibilities on Friday, and was expected to stay in that role Saturday when the Heat visit Charlotte.
The Heat (12-55) have struggled with injuries this season. Star Dwyane Wade ended his season early because of a long-troublesome left knee.

Great team win.
Hey BRIDGE!!! I was watching a commercial for the Wizards during the game that featured Caron. They first called him “CARONIMO” as it appeard in huge bold letters, then CB3 the same way, then Tough Juice the same way. I think your “pet” name for him has caught ON!
We usually play Detroit fairly well and we have a little momentum. I hope Sunday is a good game. That one could spark us a little for that lousy trip west.

OK
You had 50% from the field but it’s only Miami.
You had 12 turnovers total that acceptable but I prefer 10 or less.
Blatche had ZERO TURNOVERS thats something to cheer about.
We had a lot of in the paint scoring and thats GREAT!
We had good not great fastbreak opportunities thats something to work on.
We had 6 players in Double Figures thats great but I prefer 7 like the Lakers!
The freethrows percentage was only 50% thats unacceptable we should be in the
80% area or your making Coach Hopla look bad!
So is the glass half full or half empty? You make the call!

No Idea, but, they have been lousy from the free throw line for a couple games now. I guess it’s all the tweaks and pains. Those free throw thingys used to win us close ball games.
We beat the “Florida” teams
glass is 3/4 full.

in all my years of sports i have never heard of a coach missing a game to go scout other teams. his team threw in the towel when they traded oneal. then they made up some BS to get wade, and haslem out for the season. he knows he has a top 3 pick he is out there trying to find a player for next year. how can the NBA let him do this, he is basically saying screw the rest of the games and the fans let im looking at next season during the season. it is a disgrace. im appauled. thats like sampson at IU, really it is cheating. where is the dignity, and respect in this game these days. aren’t coaches suppose to be leaders. in 06′, 07′ and 08′ we have seen the worst coaches are far as doing things the right way. Eddie sutton returning just to win what was it 800 games. Billy Donovan accepting the magic job and then turning his back. Pat riley getting rid of vna gundy to win himself another title “stealing the glory”, the knicks firing of larry brown, Atlanta falcons coach quitting before the season ended just to take another job. pat riley skipping games to scout the tournies. bellicik spying on other teams. isiah thomas with the sexual harrasment. bobby knight quitting early. and people wonder why some coaches dont get respect. if ur going to lead a team u have to be a leader urself. THANK GOD FOR EDDIE JORDAN!

I have to agree that Miami is tanking it, although I don’t know that the injuries to Wade and Haslem were faked (didn’t Haslem have an operation yesterday?), and I disagree about the O’neal trade. His career is over, and Shawn Marion is one of the best players in the league.
In other words, watch out for Miami next year!

To take 4th in the East, we would have to end with a better record than Cleveland. They’ve already got 40 wins. I don’t think that’s likely to happen.
If it did happen, we’d face them in the playoffs w/ home court advantage. If we are 5th, we still play them, but they have the advantage.
We have the 10th best road record in the NBA; what does the upcoming trip look like? Well, it’ll be hard to beat the Lakers or Utah, so we need to beat Sac’to and Seattle. If we also beat Portland, it’ll be a very successful trip. But, first there’s Detroit. Another hard game.
If you are interested, compare Amir Johnson’s stats w/ Andray Blatche’s. Amir was taken out of high school a few picks *after* Andray in the same draft. He is a *terrific* player.

Did anyone see Uconn lose to San Diego yesterday?
Uconn’s center – the 7′3″ Hasheem Thabeet – is projected to us in next year’s first round by Draftexpress, the best of the draftnik sites. From what I saw, he can shoot free throws and block a college player’s shot. He should be able to take over a game, but he can’t.

Tom…we are only 4 games back of Cleveland and either way we would play Cleveland if we end up in he 4th in the 5th…only disadvantage of the 5th would be home-court advantage

Tom,
watch out for Miami next year if they keep Marion…(Remember his contract is up after the season..)..and if they can get the #1 pick in the draft….they would defenitly get Micheal Beasley…imagine…08-09 Miami Heat
Starting Line-Up:
PG:?
SG: D Wade
SF: “The Matrix”/Beasley
PF: “The Matrix”/Beasley
C:?
Thats pretty good…if all goes they’re way..they will be a Powerhouse in the east…
but still my Wizards will be better
GO WIZARDS

When you think about the idea of Miami tanking games, it really makes me respect this Wizard team and leadership. I mean we could have mailed it in and said lets just look to next season, we have played the entire season without gil, caron and jamison on the court at the same time. Stevenson is clearly playing hurt, we lost Daniels for some games and had to hire a player just to have enough players, the young guys have have given this team a lift and what can you say about the coach. Eddie has been solid this season. For this team to be a playoff team and not a lottery team he should be coach of the year. AJ is my selection for MVP, yes I am a homer but look what he has done this season for his team. Yes Kobe is good, but Jamison has carried this team since the playoffs last season and he has been the ROCK this season, demanding the bests out of his teammates and mentoring the young guys, without him we are a lottery team no doubt. This team will be feared come playoff time, and I hope they finally get respect.

Wiz-skins — Yes, I had already described the situation vis a vis Cleveland. No, we won’t catch them.
Your description of the Heat lineup is hilarious — you have a rookie, Beasley, at 2 positions, unknowns at 2 positions, and Wade coming off an injury. You think that’s a powerhouse, dude?
Now, if they keep Marion, if Wade comes back strong, if Haslem comes back strong, and if Beasley shows potential and some achievement, the Miami Heat will be a respectable team in the East. If they lose Marion and Wade isn’t in top form, they will miss the playoffs next year.

Welcome back Caron. He’s again playing like an all-star.
I would love for Jamison to be the MVP but I have to remember he’s shooting FG’s at 44%, 3 pointers at 34% and FT’s at 76%. Nevertheless, I have gone from looking forward to the salary cap relief when he leaves to hoping he’ll get resigned. What made the difference for me was his improved defensive play.
That was a fun game to watch. It’s nice to watch w/o being tense about possibly losing it in the last couple of minutes.
Mr. Hopla, what’s up with the free throw shooting?
I’m not as enthusiastic about the D as Chenier. Seems like we left a bunch of perimeter shooters wide open. I love Daniels, but he often chooses not to go out after open shooters.
I like Jason Williams. Why isn’t he listed as their PG above?
With the exception of Mason, I hold my breath when our reserves go in. Is it normal for rookies (and Blatche) to look so ragged? The more he plays, the more confidence Mason gets, and the better he plays.

duh — sorry!
But, I still don’t see them as a powerhouse.
neal — it’s hard to remember that blatche is 21 years old and never went through the structure and learning of a major college program. As to rookies, yes, seems normal to me.
We are 7-3 the last 10 games — ragged and all!
jon — do you think the cavs will go 6-6 through the end of the season? Do you think we’re going to win 46 games? Faith is for religion.

Thanks SportsWiz for your post on the previous thread. That tells me what I wanted to know: that getting Thomas back at the cost of Blatche’s minutes should be a big boost. Do you know when we should know the results of the CT scan?
