Yep it is really nice when Caron plays because if he doesnt Jordan as we all saw last game goes to the veterans….i think nick young barely got any minutes b/c he was a defensive not as good as rojer….and with caron out we needed the most defense we could get…if Caron plays….we win if he doesnt…it will come down to Nick…Stevenson…and Mason having outstanding games…

I was wondering if Pau Gasol was going to be available to play today…i heard he was going to be at the VC…but its not clear on if hes going to play…
Do you have any CLUE???

Pecherov has a big night to let the coach know that he *needs to play.* Nick finally gets a chance to show his defensive prowess and shuts Kobe down, and… (ok tom, wake up and take another sip of early morning starbucks coffee.)

Honestly I don’t think Pau will play, or at least no heavy minutes but that’s for me.
With Caron in the lineup we have a shot at this one, if he can’t play (what I think will happen) well we’re gonna need our guys to step up, not like the other night!! But since Roger, DeShawn, Nick and Pech (for the last two it’s not really they’re fault…) didn’t play well (or play at all concerning Pech) the other night I expect ‘em to have a good game today.

Hey Wiz-skins. Here’s what I know about Gasol. He got in very late last night to join the team, which means he has yet to go through a single practiice. Remember, Phil Jackson runs the triangle, my guess is gasol has not run that type of an offense before or at least won’t know the playcalls.
I will have a definite answer for you at about 10:45, because Gasol will have a press conference at 10:30.
Hope that helps. Stay tuned as I will post as soon as I get a definite answer. Also we will know about Caron probably by 11-11:15.

Ok here we go.
Caron Butler will start for the Wizards. Caron has not practiced and based on how he looks will determine how long he plays. Coach Jordan twice said we don’t want a 65 or 75% Caron Butler out there. Caron did go through extensive shooting drills this morning in warmups but has yet to play in a full contact environment.
Pau Gasol will dress but WILL NOT play today. Again he has not practiced with the team yet and just joined them last night.
A quick note on Kobe, Coach said the key to slowing him will be to be physical with him and keep him off his sweet spot. DeShawn spoke about limiting his touches so keep those two things in mind when you are watching the game or listening today.

They just didn’t seem to have any energy out there – I hope that they weren’t intimidated by Kobe…I think that EJ should have played both Haywood and Blatche at the same time for good double team opportunities. I just don’t know what happened out there; it can’t always be expected of Caron and Jamison to do all the work, other players have to step up.
Hey, we’ll get the next one…
Comment from GrifonRacing
Time February 3, 2008 at 11:23 PM
The Kobe’s jumped out to a pretty quick 20 point lead. After that I thought we played them pretty even. The young guys looked really good in the 4th quarter. It shows they play together a lot in practice as they really looked good as a team. McGuire made some very nice passes. Speaking of passes I don’t think Blatche needs to throw the ball at 90mph to anyone 8 feet away… especially another big. Only “bigs” I know that can catch that kinda pass are Randy Moss and Terrell Owens.
Having a 9 man team most of the first half of the season is now rearing it’s ugly head. All the starters have been playing way too many minutes and they are tired. Luckily the young guys like Nick and Roger got enough playing time to contribute now. Still, we are only a 10 man team at the present. It’s not going to get any easier after the All Star Break either. Maybe in March
We seriously need to get the next one against Philly.

Caron’s free throw streak was a thing of beauty. I loved his response when asked about it when it was still ongoing….. “when I miss I’ll just start another streak”. Gotta love that guy! And…. the guy that holds the record over 2 seasons (84 I think in one) I can’t even remember his name? I think people are going to remember Caron’s name long after his career in basketball is done.
Comment from neal

Yes, we really need to beat Philly. REVENGE for the last time there.
It was good to see Mason get his shot back and Young play better. Songaila seems to have lost all confidence. But Pecherov isn’t playing with confidence either.
I’m not so worried about the guys being physically tired. According to Chenier players would commonly play the whole game in years past. What DOES worry me is that they can’t keep up their mental intensity as well. There are 82 games. Who can play 40 minutes X 82 and not get stale? I’d rather see a rookie play with excitement and enthusiasm and get experience than a starter play with diminished intensity. The other concern I have is that it must make the player more at risk of wear and tear sorts of injuries.
Grifon, do you think anyone is listening to us?

Still in SF (sun starting to come up over Starbucks), so I missed the game.
So far this has been a really interesting season for the Wiz. We have done really well under adverse conditions, and we’ve had some guys emerge who were really questions at the beginning of the season, esp. Blatche and Mason.
So, yes, lets get all the wins we can, but not worry too much. Come the playoffs, if we’re healthy, we should be a dangerous team for whoever meets us in the first round.
How about the NY Giants!! That was the best Super Bowl in many, many years.

I’m not sure if Comcast/NBA TV broadcasted this on television during the Lakers-Wiz game, but there was a video clip (shown at the Verizon Center during a timeout) involving Superbowl predictions from Wiz players and coaches. Maybe SportzWiz can post the video for all you fans to see. I won’t give anything away but it contains funny stuff.
Speaking of video productions, I always get pumped up with the Wizards video montage after the announcement of the starting lineup. I would like to know what the name of the song is. I classify it as battle music and the team certainly has more tough battles ahead.
I agree with Tom M.; have the team get as many W’s as possible against whomever. Looks like any East team with a .500 record will make the playoffs and the Wizards are very capable of accomplishing that.

Neal, even my wife doesn’t listen to me. I can’t really expect anyone else to either I guess lol. Ever since the current regime, coaching staff and the core players, has been together the minutes the starters get hasn’t changed much. I have always thought the starters have been used too many minutes a game, but, I don’t think that is going to change. Eddie has been one of the best coaches, if not the best, the Wizards/Bullets have had in the last 30 years. I guess we will have to adapt to him. After all… I can’t go to American Service Center and buy a Benz in under 24 seconds
I think even though Songaila isn’t getting a “lot” of minutes the European Championships did him in physically. Pesherov missed a lot of games with that ankle injury. I don’t think he is in game shape just yet. I, like everyone else, am hoping when Arenas comes back he can take us to the next level, but, he is going to be a long way from game shape too when he comes back.
That was a great Super Bowl Tom. If anyone missed the 4th quarter I hope they have it on tape! Nice to see the Manning brothers win it in consecutive seasons! Archie must be on cloud nine.

Yes, we’re bound to be in the playoffs. I sure wish we could be the 3rd or 4th seed. We’ll be dangerous if Arenas comes back and fits in. We also will be better if Songaila or Pecherov gets it together, or if Thomas comes back and plays well. We need quality time from one of the three.
One of the few things better than hanging out in a Starbucks in SF is retirement – and just hanging out in general.

deshawn is in a slump again. but deshawn lets alot things get to him….. but im an athlete and me and deshawn are similar in that. he has to get himself out of that funk like he did earlier in this season. he goes through at least three times a season. hopefully not in the playoffs. i think he has a confidence issue. his whole career they said he couldnt shoot. in utah he was stocktons supposed “replacement” the media torched him saying he was a busts, he went from bench to starter to bench ( he felt like a nobody, then he got traded and he really took it hard). in orlando rivers had him scoring more than 15 points per game at times (he was on top of the world). he and t-mac were awesome he actually played the point. then johnny davis came in and benched him, one critic labled him the worst starting two gaurd in the league. brian hill would not let him shoot 3’s and labled him a “defender” so deshawn would not shoot often, he just defended. and he was good at it so he bought into that. but the magic would not give him a big contract. he and his agent took a chance and felt he can get a better deal….. but not many wanted him, they say a two gaurd should score! then orlando gets a shooter surprisingly in reddick! so he came to washington where they stole him for 900k. he had to prove himself again. and his three shooting got better. but he didnt see many shots cause he played along side the big 3. now arenas is out and he has shown he can score. he just needs more shots. in utah it was stockton n malone (no shots there). orlando it was t-mac, francis, dwight, grant hill ( no shots there) in washington its the big 3. so he gets confused its like now that arenas is out should i shoot, or defend….. well deshawn knows his abilities he just has to keep the critics off his back and play his part. u people cheer for the ur favorites one night, and throw rocks at em the next. we need less bandwagon fans and more true fans. like the giants n pats this weekend. most of the people didnt watch one game this season but they swear their pats fans! lol ne way GO WIZ

Brian here is a little F.Y.I for you about the time the team started winning a lot of there games Caron was on the sidelines yelling shoot the *************** Ball Deshawn….. cant even say what he said i would have to wash my mouth out….. any way that made Deshawn was mad as hell after the time out he came out and killed about 6-7 3’s that game so i think he needs to be pushed to shoot the ball even if he is not hitting them all he needs to keep at it…. so you bring up a good point i think that’s his big problem
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time February 5, 2008 at 8:44 AM
Brian, first of all like most people you seem to think the most important thing a player can do is score, as if you were ranking how good players in the league are in order of their scoring average.
DeShawn is proving to be a versatile guard, and when he has a good night — as I’ve said a hundred times — we usually win. He should know that he is critical to the team, and I’m sure his coaches and teammates let him know.
He plays solid defense, doesn’t foul too much and rebounds about average for a 2. As to scoring, right now defenders are denying him his favorite spots to shoot from. He had a bunch of success, teams looked at tape, and they are countering him. Next step is his, and I’m sure he’s working on it.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time February 5, 2008 at 8:49 AM
Kyle Lowry — you bet, I’d like to have him. He is a solid young player.
As to giving up Young or Pecherov for him, no way. But, I’d give something — I don’t know how you make the salaries work, but maybe they’d like Darius?? They just lost Gasol, and they may feel they need a big guy (despite having acquired that monster dude Kwame Brown).

All I want to know is where is The Wizards’ 6 man? I am not talking about their bench players I am talking about their fans at The Verion Center. I mean the fans of the visiting team are sometimes louder than The Wizards fan at the games at Verizon Center. The whole thing just make me sick. There are times when a visiting team’s player who might shoot about 50% from the line, will make both freethrows with no problem at Verizon Center. Let us all be real here The Wizards have been playing good basketball but with that horrible cheering they get from all of you who call yourselves fans and yet shy to cheer for your team, they will not go far. All of you Laker fans and Celtics fans I wish you will all pack your bags and move out of DC and go to LA and Boston, you all make me sick as well. Brian –
Even before reading your comments about Deshawn, I pretty much detected the fact that he’s still trying to “find himself†as a player. I’m usually not the first to bring forth someone else’s’ “weaknesses,†but I’ve come to notice that his weakness as a player is the fact that he gets too comfortable; we all know and have seen that he can shoot and sometimes make 3-pointers, but he got too comfortable with that – maybe he should try to be a more flexible player by spreading himself out everywhere on the floor. If things aren’t working out so well from the three-point areas, try a two or a lay-up or a dunk – there’s so many things that he can do, but I just don’t see him doing it. That’s my opinion of Deshawn; I haven’t followed his career, so by all means, correct me if you feel that I’m wrong about something.
Also, I am a DIE-HARD ‘Zards fan; I don’t have to jump on the bandwagon because I’m always on. As a matter of fact, I’m so ON that I’ve attracted others to this team because of my on-ness (I know that this isn’t a word, but bare with me…)
Comment from brian
Time February 5, 2008 at 1:33 PM
i was not saying the most important thing for deshawn to do is score. i have known this guy since high school… he needs a confidence booster. he gets really down on himself after bad shooting nights cause he feels he lets his team down and critics smile and say i told u so when he shoots bad. he knows he is not t-mac or gil and he is not trying to be, he knows his role is D, but…….. the critics look at his stats and say well he doesn’t do much for ne body well thats because his whole career he has played next to stars and never had a chance to put up big numbers cause he never took many shots! that is all im saying TOM! if u can read it simply says he has been through alot, people always doubted him and he sucks those things in sometimes and struggle. so that was writted to explain those feelings. so he is in a slump and he has to get out of it!

I don’t think that we should be so anxious to try to make this “golden” trade just because the Lakers did so. Giving up Young and Pech for him would be a definite hell no!
Him/Songailia trade might sound tempting, but I’m just not seeing what that would do; just a temporary solution perhaps?? To solve the “Songailia problem” all the coach need to do (in my opinion) is decrease his minutes until he gets it back together. Y’all might not see it, but this team has Championship potential – but what we all need is a little patience…

secondly is was speaking on the critics of this wizards team who are so called fans. u cant win every night. some people act like were in greece or rome at the colliseum where the wizards are entertaining us, if they do play well its like “off with their heads”! ahh bridge ur just about right….. but its just that deshawn thrives on what ever every one thinks. one night he’s a defender the next night they want him to shoot more. he just needs to get a feel for his on game, and match his personality with his game. but like u said he needs to do more than just fire up 3’s! he is a great slasher and he can really shoot mid-range jump shots. its like throughout his career he has improved areas in his game. but he never combines them he just finds one thing and sticks to that

Never forget the word “Fan” comes from the word “Fanatic”. It applies in most cases on both ends of the spectrum.

Prediction: Stevenson, Mason and Young will have good games. If Butler plays we beat the Puddlers.
