Game Day Jazz
6:20 AM….Dave Johnson checking in…and it is a good morning ….hard work pays off.. and the Wizards have two examples of that in All Stars Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler…clearly the rest of the league has noticed the job Jamison and Butler have done as players and leaders to have the Wizards at four games above .500 half-way through a season without Gilbert Arenas….and we have had so mnay reminders of how much we miss Arenas but this is special to have two guys selected as reserves and at the forward position. Antawn Jamison: On being selected by the coaches’ vote:“I always think that the coaches’ selection is a little bit more meaningful. To get selected among your peers, by guys who know everything about the Xs and Os and are trying to find a way to win against you really…that really says a lot. It says that they respect what you are doing and they understand what you have accomplished.â€On Caron Butler being an All-Star as well: “Just to make the team says a lot, but to have a teammate there with you, it really says a lot about the type of team you have and the type of guys that you are surrounded by. Not too many teams have more than one representative and for the last three out of four years we have had two guys representing our team. It says a lot about the type of talent that we have on this team and the type of character that we have as well.†Caron Butler: “It is very satisfying because a lot of people doubted us. A lot people thought we wouldn’t be able to turn everything around. As captains, Antawn and I decided to take the lead and lead the team on the court and off the court. We have players on the team who have raised their level of play.â€The Wizards will need that high level of play tonight against a very good Utah Jazz team….BLOGCAST starts at 7:55…hope you can join us–again you can hit us up on the BLOG –live as we do the radio
6:37PM….Dave Johnson checking in courtside…..No Caron Butler….so starters….daniels, stevenson, haywood, jamison, blatche…..jazz williams brewer okur, boozer, kirilenko

I think we should be happy to get a split with the Rafters with Caron out.
Of the next 7 opponents, all but Philly have a better record than ours. We need at least a couple of upsets. It would be terrific to get one tonight.
Please be well, Caron.
Go Wiz.

This would be a tough win with a fully healthy team; it’ll be a great great win if we can get it in our currently depleted state.
Maybe they’ll be taking us lightly? That’d help.

DeeCharming…
you should be kick off this blog for saying something like that…
This team could use Gilbert for all those close games…i think that when he comes back he wont average 30 a game any more maybe 20….he will learn how to play defense…and he will be MUCH improved with him..we would have better depth, scoring options,..etc..

DeeCharming i think most people will disagree with you on that one, but you are entitled to your opinion
Just a quick stat on body size, Gil is 30lbs bigger and 1 inch taller. For what it’s worth.
As for Caron tonight. He did not practice yesterday and only did individual work today at shootaround. He is being called a game-time-decision, but don’t be surprised to see him take tonight off and have a day off tomorrow before the Noon game on Sunday vs. LA, his old team.

Don’t get it twisted man, I love the Wizards.
I think Nick Young as the potential to be a Devin Harris type player when he when learns to protect the ball better and increase his focus because he definitely has the skill.

Unless you’re Gilbert Arenas’ rehab trainer or Gilbert Arenas himself, you can’t comment about his body “not built for the league”. I thought DeeCharming was mistakenly typing Gilbert Arenas when it is Larry Hughes that should be mentioned about the body being made of glass.
Seriously, no one knows what is going to happen to Gilbert Arenas. No one knows if his knee injury is going to cause future chronic problems. No one knows if he can adapt his game to be more team-oriented. No one knows if he will have the discipline to play defense. And no one really knows how much better/worse the Washington Wizards will be with him.
Do you people know the difference between a superstar, a star, and a regular player in the league? The superstar is one that can create his own shot and have more God-given talent than others (like speed, strength, quickness). It is that simple. I can’t name one superstar in the league that can’t create his own shot. Gilbert is a superstar because he can create his own shot, has tremendous speed and quickness, and has a strong physique for his size. Caron and Antawn are only star players because they can create their own shot but they just lack more of the God-Given talent. Devin Harris isn’t even a star player by my definition because he can’t create his own shot. Harris is fast and quick, but he doesn’t have the consistency in shooting yet. Harris’ high FG% is strictly from driving the ball to the hole for layups. For this fact alone I will take Arenas over Harris any day. I have seen what Arenas can do when healthy and it’ll be a mistake to let that type of talent walk away during a man’s prime.

i like what you said but one thing was wrong CB3 is better than most the guys you call superstars i dont think you can say he is not in anyway, shape or form… he is one of 3 players with 3 big stats night in and night out LBJ and Kobe are the only other players with stats like his so to say he is just a star is wrong and is KG a superstar? if so then you got to give AJ the same title because at this point AJ is a better player stats wise than KG!

I presume we can all agree that Arenas has always believed that he can make every shot and that what’s good for the team is for him to score a boatload.
It seems to me that he has gradually taken a few less of those quick shots from the perimeter, but he still had a ways to go when he got hurt. And he never expended as much energy on the defensive end as on the offensive end.
I presume we also can agree that Arenas has a huge talent and huge drive – biggest on the team in both categories in my opinion.
I THINK our best hope for the team to get to the Detroit/Boston level is for Arenas to come back healthy and with a different attitude/approach. I know it’s got to be difficult for a guy with his ability to see/accept that what’s best for the team isn’t his scoring 30 points/night. It took M. Jordan a while, as I remember. Quite a few superstars never do adjust, it seems to me. I think Gilbert has a good chance of pulling it off. The current success of the team w/o him may be an excellent message to him.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with saying Caron isn’t a superstar because in my opinion, there are only like 12 total guys in the league that is a superstar from my definition. In no particular order: Kobe, LeBron, Wade, Amare, Shaq, Vince Carter, Gilbert, TMac, Iverson, Melo, KG, and Nash.
I don’t disagree with most of what Wiz4Life said. But I think when you look at stats as a means to measure and compare, you’re more talking about guys being classified as an all-star and not a superstar/star/regular player. Looking at my 12 from above, obviously Vince, Shaq, Gilbert, and TMac are not putting up any jaw dropping numbers/stats this season and thus they’re not “all-star worthy”. But, they are still superstars in my mind because they all can (1) create their own shot and (2) have so much more God-Given talent than their peers. Shaq and Vince are about to fall off my superstars list because their God-given talent is nearly gone (if not already).
My issue with Caron not being a superstar in my definition has to do with God-given attributes (basically, things that you are born with). Caron lost 15 lbs two summers years ago and is much quicker now; but he’s still not as quick as other 6′6″ to 6′8″ inch guys like Kobe, LeBron, and TMac. Caron may also not be as strong as LeBron. These God-given talents just don’t match up at this moment for Caron.
In summary, there is a difference between how I define an all-star (using stats) and how I define a superstar/star/regular player (using God-given attributes and having the ability to create your own shot). Caron and Antawn have stats to back up their trip to New Orleans, but just not enough to be a superstar (yet).

i get what your saying but if you base it on the ability that they have from birth lets say that LBJ is faster and has better driving ability and Caron dose not but he is putting up the same numbers that makes Caron better because LBJ game came easy but CB3 has a disadvantage because he is slower and is not able to drive the lane like that but is able to get his points on hard shots and tough plays would that not make CB3 better than LBJ

In Wiz4Life’s example, Caron is a better player than LeBron. No question about that. But being a better player doesn’t mean he’s a superstar in the eyes of other people. Caron is a stud in D.C. And David West is a stud in New Orleans. Both are much better players than Vince, TMac, and Marion this season. The world will never acknowledge Butler/West as a superstar outside their team area but they have made Vince and TMac superstars. Why you ask? I don’t really know the actual answer but I think it has something to do with Butler/West not being a “freak of nature” and I strongly believe a “freak of nature” in NBA = (1) can create own shot and (2) mad ability given by God. You have to have both to be a superstar. I just see both Butler and West lacking the God-given ability. Superstars are freaks of nature and people love them. From Shaq 16 years ago to LeBron now, these are the guys that just stand out and that’s what people want more of. If you think about it, Gilbert is a freak of nature and that’s why we love him (well, most everyone here except DeeCharming).
Like I said before, I don’t think there is anything wrong with not calling Caron a superstar. He’s done more than anyone here expected of him in the last couple of seasons. You don’t have to be a superstar to be respected. Caron has certainly earned that through hard work.
Onto something about tonight’s game. The Jazz are 9-1 in their last 10 games with a 6 game winning streak. The Wiz, even without Caron, have a chance because Utah is 8-15 on the road. The Jazz are about fundamentals. I believe you combat fundamentals with better fundamentals to get the Jazz guys out of position offensively and defensively. Deron Williams can’t be happy with what Gilbert did to him last year, so expect him to pick-n-roll the Wizards to death with Boozer as the recipient. The young guys on the Wiz need to stay disciplined and grounded.

Oh boy if they really got Gasol they just got… well better is not enough for me but…
An other quick thought about that trade, How is JCN feeling now that he cried to get with his buddy and that his buddy left hahahahahahaha.
Well about the Wiz now, having Caronwould really be great tonight and I can just imagine how happy and wanting to play he is right now!! I’m a lil worried about the Wiz’s last performances which were… well…. kind of sad… and to be honest I don’t see Gil coming back just after the allstar game so they gotta get back on the right track asap.

Jesus @ the Lakers/Grizzlies trade. Lakers want to win one more with Black Mamba within the next 2 year window. Grizzlies will have so much money to spend that they can get up to 3 really good players in offseason.
Chicago made a big mistake with Gasol sweepstakes. As a matter of fact, Chicago (players and management) has made a bunch of mistakes since the Ben Wallace acquisition. Bad draft choices and bad player decisions. Ouch.
I feel bad for Navarro. His best friend is gone and he doesn’t really fit the team’s run-and-gun philosophy (well, neither did Gasol).

I think a player is a super-star, based on how he plays and how it envolves the players around him. If one player with God given talent is scoring all of the points and the team is not winning games then all you have is one great show and nothing to show for it. Everyone wants to see Kobe, Lebron and Wade play, because of the things that they can do and the amazing shots that they make. But people know that teams like the Spurs and the Pistons are going to win because they have guys that play together. What we have here is a team learning to play together and winning games with super-stars that are making other guys better, without the guy with the God-given talent scoring 40 a night. I like our chances with Gilbert playing with these guys not by himself.

My immediate thought is what this does to our “first round” pick from the Phizzlies. The pick is top 19-protected in the next draft. Right now the Phizzlies are in 28th place in the 30 team league. Kwame Brown and Javaris Crittenton for Gasol can’t help them get better. So we’ll have two firsts and a second round pick coming next year. We have 13 good players on the roster now and three draftees coming. At least one has to go, and that’s if Grunfeld can fit 15 under the luxury tax limit.
And then there’s Veeremenko. He was originally expected to spend two years in Europe. That would put him here next year also, and at our most crowded position. Barring not resigning Jamison and major injury to another PF, I can’t see that there’s room for him. However, I just checked the Collective Bargaining Agreement. We retain his draft rights as long as he’s playing pro elsewhere. If he is no longer under contract somewhere else we have his rights until the next draft, when he can reenter the draft if we haven’t signed him.
The TV guide says tonights game is at 7. I presume the sports page is right – it says 8.

All the players in the NBA have what was called a “God-given†talent because it’s what they do professionally; if they weren’t good, they wouldn’t be playing. How I see it is that every single player have their own individual strengths (and weaknesses, unfortunately). Bench players can do what the “big-dogs†do, we just don’t get to see this a lot because they’re sitting on the bench! Look at how amazed we all were when Dominic did what he did the first Raptors game. People like Kobe and LBJ are HIGHLY overrated players – it’s a conspiracy how overrated these two are! Wade is overrated too; the moment that he sees that his team is losing, he’s ready to sit-out due to “injury†or “sickness;†but why should he care – he already won a championship. Speaking of championships, I think that a person who deserves to win one is Grant Hill – that’s all I’ll say about that…
The Wizards are full of superstars; I love this team and hope that they’ll stay like this for a while. DeeCharming if you think that Gil is some type of “Mr.Glass,†maybe you should go on YouTube and re-watch the day of his injury – the man tried to get back up! Did you catch that cuz I did?? Maybe you should also do some research on other players who had similar injuries, primarily Amare S. DeeCharming your comment about Gil is so bad that it makes me look bad because my nickname is “Dee.†What happen? Did you just wake up this morning wanting to feel special for a couple of seconds? But hey, that’s YOUR opinion, and I respect that…
We need our big-three back; y’all know why??

Give me a break Eddie, no Opech no Nick. Whats up, Dave are we watching the same game, what flow? They shoot we rebound and are unable to turn that into points, where is the flow? Darius is not the answer

i think i have figured it out…without Caron Butler aka Tuff Juice…we need some more defensive minded players in there to make up for his absence and obviously Nick Young doesnt play better defnse than Roger…and O-Pech may play about the same as Darius BUT he chose veteran EXPERIENCE(props to DAVE) on that position battle

Great game by Blatche. And he did it on national TV. He outscored the all-star Boozer 19-4. That made the game competitive. On the other hand, Stevenson, Mason, Young and Songailia were miserable. If those four had any game at all, say 20 points combined, then the Wiz win tonight. That’s a pity. They generally shoot well at home. Strong game by Jamison too. But he needed help and the bench was not productive tonight.
One thing that has become apparant the last 3 games – Blatche can be a legit starter in this league. And that is saying a lot for a guy who is only 21. Does he remain as a starter with Butler moving to the backcourt? I have blogged about that line-up many times and would like to see EJ give it a try.

They gave it a good shot I thought. Blatche looked good. Songaila and Young didn’t. Neither played with confidence.
Too many points in the paint. I realize the Jazz is good at the pick and roll but we’ve got to do better at rotating.
With Butler back Sunday and a chip on our shoulder the Puddlers better bring their A game. Gasol or not.

Nick Young came into the game cold and did not get the oppurtunity to warm up to the game, Songaila played many minutes and stunk

It has to be hard for a player to play relaxed when he just comes in for a few minutes each game. I understand why Jordan doesn’t like the alternatives, however. Hard to justify more minutes for a guy who’s not playing well in limited action.

That must have been a hard loss for the team to stomach. They had a legit chance to beat a very good team while fielding a very depleted roster.
As I’ve said many times, the Wizards have a good chance to win a game where DeShawn plays well. If he has an off night, we don’t have much room for error. Tonight, with the bench itself depleted because Andray started, they didn’t come through.
I’m on the West Coast (sitting in a Starbucks in SF at 6:30 in the morning), so I didn’t get a chance to see the game — although I did catch the last minute and a half on nba tv. I’m delighted with the way Andray is playing; he seems to have played great minutes last night. He still fouls too much, and he had 5 turnovers. Still…
Does anyone understand why Pecherov didn’t play. I’m kind of sick of the nothing we get from Songaila.
Hey, I really like the Wizards right now — even with this loss. They really compete, and we are building a heck of a team!

Hey looks like the grizzlies like that monster Kwame Brown enough to trade Pau Gasol for him!
How about that? Watch out for the Lakers in the 2d half and in the playoffs. Memphis is a mess; they basically got nothing for one of the better players in the league.

I got it bass-ackwards about our pick from the Phizzlies. They will obviously be one of the bottom 19 teams, so we won’t get our pick next year. And they are obviously rebuilding and going for youth, so who knows when we’ll get it. They stand to pick toward the top for a while. If we don’t get our first-round pick in 6 years, it converts to a second round pick.
Yes, Andray is making big strides. His present rate of fouling, though high, is still much better. And his shot-making continues to improve.

Wiz4Life…. lol…. I can see Navarro looking around saying ….where the heck did he go?
My question is why the heck would Memphis do that? I thought they were rebuilding….. Around Gasol? Didn’t they get Navarro to further enhance that? That is like filling the tub to take a bath and pulling the stopper out when it’s half way full? I just don’t get it. Maybe they don’t want us getting a first round pick and will settle for us getting a 2nd rounder in 6 years?
people in La are now going to be saying “hahahaha we got Gasol for Kwame”. Until now I “had the rights” to that line lol.
