check this out gang..Wizards guard Antonio Daniels has averaged 11.6 points, 6.2 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game in 16 games as a starter this season. Among all NBA guards with at least 15 starts this season, Daniels joins Jason Kidd, Jamaal Tinsley, Baron Davis, Dwyane Wade and Andre Miller as the only six guards in the NBA that average 10+ points, 6+ assists and 4+ rebounds in games started.

If you look at the line:
http://www.nba.com/games/20080106/SEAWAS/boxscore.html
you can see that we got next to nothing from the bench. Pretty good game from Songaila; otherwise not much. Glad we won, but we need more production from our reserves.

The coach did the right thing at half time because our second unit lost there motivation
and killer instinct. We desperately need our second unit to come into the game focused
and ready to go for the juggler if not the coaching staff will lose confidence in them and then only a 7 man rotation wil be used. This should consist of starters:Daniels,Stevenson,
Butler,Jamison,Haywood and reserves Songalia and Mason. We cannot afford to play the starters over 30 minutes per game without some serious back up from our top notch reserves! I just want AB to settle down and be more consistent with a low post game and not out there on the wing. I would like to see more of my favorite Nick Youngs turn aound jump shots with nothing but net swish!DMAC I know your offensive game is a work in progress but high percentage dunks are very makeable! Lets turn this perception around and give us what we want and that is Balance from all concerned!

Thanks Tom. Haven’t heard much from you lately. What’s your take on our guys in general?
I hope Songaila is beginning to get it together. He hasn’t looked good to me on either end of the court this year. We just need for him and Blatche to play up to their potential. Together with Mason that’s all we need for reserves. A dependable eight man rotation is enough. Plus a few minutes here and there for Young and McGuire.
Essentially I agree with you, Aundra, although I wouldn’t worry about 35 minutes for Butler and Jamison. But this 39-40 minutes a game is risky. Plus, we need to develop some other players if we’re going to the next level.

The worlds most famous renaissance man Leonardo Da Vinci had a mentor to mould
him into one one the greatest arts, scientist, engineer of his time! The veterans must
now mould our reserves in the same way. Its all about building a relationship with
professionals with specialized knowledge, who can propel you God given abilities to the
next level. The idea of mixing veterans with non veterans is not new but has worked for
ever there has been a NBA. What is a veteran in my opinion. A veteran is any one with
5 years of on the job training in a specific job or discipline! They have already done the
research and knows what works and what doesn’t work. For example partying the night before the big game is definitely a no no or not getting proper rest before a game would definitely affect you playing ability! They have made thousand of mistakes to get to this level and now have the specialized information to keep them there without any mistakes! I like the idea of mentoring and I know it’s going to be a work in progress but
at the end of ones career you couldn’t have made a better decision by listening to the
veterans knowledge and opinions!
Comment from Tom Mandel

neal — I agree that a dependable 8-man rotation would probably suffice, although it’d be interesting to look at the stats for minutes played across nba teams and their rosters; I think most good teams go deeper than 8 guys.
Still, what would an 8-man rotation look like? You’d like to have a reliable backup center, a 6th-man type who is a scoring threat, and someone who provides defense. Do we have that at present?
Songaila shoots pretty well, but he commits way too many fouls. To be honest, I don’t think he is all that good a player. Mason is solid defensively, but not really a stopper. He’s a streaky shooter. Blatche, despite being in something of a dip these days, is having a strong season.
Hence, I think we’re really only 1 of 3 in the needs off the bench. As to Nick, I’m really disappointed in his level of play. Dominic is raw, obviously.
On the other hand, I’m really impressed by the level of play of our starting unit in the absence of Gilbert. Caron and Antawn are playing like a couple of the best players in the league, Antonio and Brendan aren’t far behind them, and DeShawn has been solid over the last month as well.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time January 7, 2008 at 10:52 AM
Another note on our bench:
Guards — ideally, you’d like DeShawn and Antonio to play about 30 minutes each. DeShawn seems to be most productive at that level, and Antonio is in his 11th season. We have a hard time providing the needed 36 minutes of good backup guard play. Some from Roger, yes, but there’s no counting on Nick Young at this point.
Center — w/ Haywood playing 30 minutes, and Blatche 20 we’ve got the 5 position pretty well covered.
Forwards — ideally, Antawn could be at 33 minutes. We back him up w/ Songaila, but it would be nice to have someone better. We have an especially big drop off problem, however, when Caron comes out of the game. Dominic brings athleticism but not much skill at this point, so he doesn’t get many minutes. Nick, as I say, is not ready to be counted on.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we re-signed Mike Wilk just to lessen our need to rely on rookies.
Comment from GrifonRacing
Time January 7, 2008 at 12:52 PM
I don’t think this team should consider shortening the rotation for the reasons stated above. Our young guys all show promise, and, without court time they will never get the chance to reach their potential. Guys like Young and McGuire aren’t solid contributers now, but, with court time they may be toward the end of the season and going forward into next season. Young may not be the best back up at guard right now, but, I’ll still take him over Donnell Taylor. Songaila may not be the best back up at forward, but, I’ll take him over Ruffin. Pesherov, from what I’m hearing, is close to playing. When he comes back it should solidify the rotation at forward. imo our 10 man team this season is a much better team than the 15 man teams we have had in the recent past.
Comment from LilGil
Time January 7, 2008 at 1:39 PM
I definitly think that playing our key players 30 to 40 minutes a game is definitly not the good solution. One of the biggest problem for the wizards these past seasons was the injuries ( well obviously last season it was the main problem…) and we definitly don’t wanna get into it (too much at least) this season. I just can’t imagine the Wizards without Caron or Antawn at this point… Therefore we have to have confidence in our bench, problem the bench is definitly not responding, I mean we can’t get consistent performances… Nick Young, he’s “learning” right now and he needs minutes, but we can’t rely on him. Dominic… well he seems like he’s stressed up when he’s on the floor, it seems like he doesn’t make the right choices even though he knows em…Darius’s fouls too much that’s obvious, but when he’s into it he can score and that’s important as a backup for Antawn. Roger for me is the best player off the bench, he can score, he doesn’t commit too many stupid fouls and he dafinitly can score. Now about Blatche… well he should be a pretty good player, but as Ivan pointed it out in one of his last articles I definitly believe that he doesn’t get into it enough… He needs discipline (I speak about him but the two rooks definitly need some too). I remember reading ChenierFan saying that during the pregame shoot around in New Jersey Blatche was messing around instead of doing what he was supposed to. I know we got good vets in the team and I know they can handle that , the problem is how long’s it gonna take?? If our starting 5 has to play up to 35-40 minutes in the tough games we’re about to face (boston, dallas…) well I hope they stay healthy…
As for now we cannot rely on the bench, as Eddie said it recently they gotta get better… quickly.
Comment from AUNDRA
Time January 7, 2008 at 2:19 PM
Its a experiment for disaster with the starting five playing over 30 minutes every night
but wait until back to back . You will see a huge drop off in production due to over working and no help in sight. We cannot procede in the face of uncertainty like that.
The bench has only one choice and that is put up or shut up. I know it’s harsh but someone has to say it!It might as well come from a concerned fan! The game against
Houston will be extremely hard because we have one of the best centers in the World coming and he has NO Weakness because if you foul him he can make freethrows and
he is very mobile so Haywood Good Luck Buddy! I would like to see the game plan for this game because you have very few options!Mcgrady has back problems but other than that he is unstoppable also!

Here’s my idea for playing minutes per game:
PG Daniels 30, Mason 18
SG Stevenson 28, Mason 12, Young 8
SF Butler 34, Blatche 10, McGuire 4
PF Jamison 34, Songaila 14
C Haywood 30, Blatche 18
Pecherov competes with Songaila when he comes back.
I don’t think Butler and Jamison will have any trouble carrying those minutes. Butler is young and tough and Jamison is known for playing lots of minutes w/o getting hurt. At present Butler is averaging 40 and Jamison 39.
