Game Day Heat

10:25 AM…dave johnson checking in..back home and BLOGCAST should be back…becasue I know the internet works at Verizon Center..yes defense cost us down the stretch…negative–we have had a collection of games that we could have won–bulls, hawks, pacers, and last night nets(i know you can’t win them all but wish we could have grabbed two of those)—but still despite all the injuries a chance to get though the first 2 months of the season with a winning record….thisĀ  team has really worked hard..hope that hard work is rewarded tonight…check bak later…BLOGCAST starts at 7

6:30PM…Dave and Glenn checking..ready to blog and ready to win..no Antonio Daniels tonight…and too early to tell about Detroit….thanks for the posts today…laughing about chenierfans comments about the noise…. it is loud in alot of arenas..but new jersey is actually one of the quieter ones….

6:45PM…starters are in….mason, stevenson, haywood, jamison, butler……wade, davis, barron, haslem, wright…

7:10pm…Jumoke shot some pre-game behind the scenes stuff for us again. He has a couple shots of Daniels warming up, Blatche receiving a gift and Haywood talking about boxing.

It sounds like Shaq did not travel with the team and therefore Earl Barron will most likely get the start for the Heat.

  2. Brickjp Says:

We should have a dominating win tonight. No questions asked. This team is in turmoil and we need to take advantage.

  3. ChenierFan Says:

I was at the game in NJ last night (I live in NJ) and was disappointed in the loss but pleased with the way the Wiz are playing. They really need Daniels back at the point. His absence really shows the last five minutes of the game - on both ends of the court.

Seeing the game in person and later on tape I think Jordan needs to protect his players a bit. Particularly Blatche and Young. They were fouling Young all over the place and nary a call. One that play where he tried the dunk, he got clobberred in the face, which is normally an easy and obvious flagrant foul call. And Blatche got fouled around the hoop a couple of times. A couple of fouls on Blatche were very questionable, particularly the moving screen call where the guy wasn’t even trying to defend. Oh, Yes…The Wiz were not allowed to touch Jefferson and Carter.

On the other hand, the reason the Wiz lost is that the Nets brought their absolute best game last night. Being in NJ I see them play a lot and that was their best game of the season. Too bad it had to happen against the Wiz.

Another observation…Is it just me or does attending these NBA games pose a clear and present danger to my sense of hearing? The constant noise at these games is downright painful. I remember when the game itself was all that was needed to generate excitement.

What’s this talk about getting Larry Hughes? He is nowhere near the player he was, let alone worth $13MM/yr. I’m sure the Cavs are disappointed in his play. Tough luck for them. They expected an All-Star level player, but he left his game in DC that last year he was here. He looks like he is heavier and has lost a step.

Now let’s go after the Heat. Without Mourning they should a lot softer when they go to the bench.

  4. SportzWiz Says:

Coach Jordan just spoke to the media, AD will not be in the lineup tonight.

  5. LilGil Says:

Thank’s for the news SportWiz (as usually). Were there any information about wheter or not Antonio would play against Detroit on wednesday??
Btw ChenierFan interesting post, I also thought Nick would get a flagrant foul on that dunk atemp, I remember coach Jordan spoke with him just after that play, I guess he had realize how hard they were playing him.

  6. SportzWiz Says:

All I can tell you is that Daniels went through warmups today. Unfortunately I am guessing I will have a better idea after shoot around on Wednesday whether he will be able to go that night. But he is definitely moving a lot better, it just sounds like he is not quite game ready.

  7. SportzWiz Says:

By the way I don’t want to change topics, but the Nick Young and Dominic McGuire vlog 7 is going to be up soon, as soon as it is on Washingtonwizards.com I will provide a link. And all I can tell you is it is hilarious!

  8. LilGil Says:

Okay thank’s, let’s hope the couple days of rest we’re about to get will give him the time to get back to game mode.

    also happy new year everyone.

    Cheers

  93. Jason C Says:

same, happy new year ppl, thanks again.

  94. GrifonRacing Says:

    Happy New Year Everyone!

Wonderful team win tonight. Everyone contributed. The team scoring was even, we had over 20 assists again (that seems to be very “key”), and they played with energy. ELEVEN team steals!

It’s one thing to beat the Bobcats and the Heat “right now”. The real test will be wednesday against the Pistons. If we can get AD back and get that one we will be “for real”.

Ernie… Tom makes a good point, one I hadn’t thought of, Sign Mason to an extension before he “goes up for bid” at the end of the season!! I keep kidding you, Tom, about Mason, and, never thought once other teams are seeing him too! I always knew he could play, but, never thought about him playing anywhere but for the Wizards. We need to keep that rascal here in DC.

  95. Reuben Says:

Hey I am back it was a great win last night hopefully we can keep it going into the New year

  96. Bridge Says:

That was a great game yesterday. Mike Wilks’ defense was flawless - they need that.

  97. Tom Mandel Says:

I wasn’t able to watch this one — nice to get a lopsided win.

The numbers say that Mike Wilks had a terrific game. I hope we hold on to him, as we definitely need point guard minutes even when AD comes back.

As to Roger — hindsight being 20-20, it’s now obvious that we should have made sure to include an option year in his contract. At the same time, he deserves to get paid for upping his level of play — by us, I hope.

  98. AUNDRA Says:

Character is a big thing when playing at this level of competition. If for example you have the big money anything over 10 million and not fighting for every rebound and going to the hole for contact and 1 then you are playing out of character. I like AB and Darius Songalia but they seem to get lost and forget how important they are ! If either one of them gets out of character 10 points and 7 rebound plus steals and blocks right now we will lose. We know what to expect from the rookies but we have to have confidence in our veterans every night or it will come to a emotional lose. The same is for our starters which need to stay consistent. I like MadDog Stevenson but he rarely goes to the hole for the dunk or layup with contact and one. The points have to be close to 12 with some threes and a couple of rebounds and a steal or two thats it. We still have the man who can shoot from every angle Big J Jamison and the best midrange small foward in the league who can stop and pop from 26feet on in! The turnovers has to be small and the rebounds has to be large . Finally we have our leader on the floor coming back in Daniels who can help on getting us to 20 assists and over plus pop a three and penetrate to the basket for score and one! We must remain disciplined with extremely high energy to beat Detroit. The Pistons have the best balance in the NBA and definitely the best bench I have seen in some time. We have our work level raised to the highest degree!Good Luck

  99. neal Says:

I missed the last two. Sounds like the Miami game was a real team win.

I agree, we should sign Mason to an extension.

But what about Wilks? Will Abe insist on cutting him? I wonder if Pollin told EG a year ago Grunfeld had to stay under the luxury tax limit and now he’s showing Grunfeld he meant what he said, regardless of the consequences.

  100. GrifonRacing Says:

I don’t know how close we are now to the luxury tax, but, Wilks can’t be getting anymore than league minimum. He doesn’t know the offense yet and still he runs the team very very well. I’m with Bridge! He sticks like flypaper on defense. When he lets it go he can shoot too. And for 6 foot nutin he gets his share of rebounds.

Abe has never payed the luxury tax and has been vocal about not paying it, BUT, this time given our injuries this season he almost has to. To let a guy like Wilks go after we already know he fits in with the team (he no doubt wore 2 left sandals knowing it would get Gil and Stevenson going) imo would be a mistake.

  101. neal Says:

I quite agree Grifon, but then I completely disagreed with starting the season with 12 healthy guys. And again with not picking someone up when Arenas went down. Well, we’ll know by the 10th.

We’ll learn more about our team Wed night.

  102. GrifonRacing Says:

Speaking of healthy bodies…. has anyone heard anything about Etan? Any updates on his recovery?

If he is out long term, and I’m guessing heart surgery qualifies for a long term rehabilitation, shouldn’t the NBA give the team some type of dispensation?

  103. BruceO Says:

yeah I am curious as well as to how etan is doing. Hope he’s doing okay. I was thinking the other day that hopefully he’s healthy enough now that a few months have gone by to work out and improve his health. Not even work out but just try and improve his skill sets so he can try and defy the odds and come back improved and healthy. I’m not against his coming back to the team. I just hope he’s in a position to make the best decision for himself and his family

  104. AUNDRA Says:

    DJ
I would like a status report on our 7 footer is he making enough progress to even run.
Mr. Pecherov has been on crutches a long time so how is the healing process coming along. The next question is whats the status on Agent Zero is he making freethrows or even coming to the gym for therapy. Finally hows big brother Etan doing ? I hope he is in great spirit and coming along with his comeback routine!

  105. neal Says:

I have in the back of my mind that 6 months is normal recovery for open heart surgery for a young healthy person. That would put Thomas back on the court in April, wouldn’t it? But if Blatche and/or Pecherov can handle the back-up center duties I imagine the Wiz will just let Thomas wait till next year.

Regardless of what the league SHOULD do, they count pay to players who are injured like any other pay with regards to the luxury tax. The ONLY exception to the luxury tax limit is pay to a medically retired player - and that’s only after he’s been gone a full year. And I expect Thomas to play out his contract next year and the following one.

I would also love any news on Pecherov and Arenas.

  106. GrifonRacing Says:

Oh Well Guys. I see where we released Wilks today.

The saving grace to that , if any, is that Daniels is ready to go Wednesday against the “former Bullets” of Michigan (minus Ben Wallace these days). It’s going to take an A game from everyone and have everyone on the Pistons get shoes that don’t fit. We will need a great defensive effort and ,by letting Wilks go, some of that was lost. This is a Big Game. We win this one we go into a “slightly softer” schedule coming up.
