Game Day Charlotte
5:21AM…Dave Johnson checking in from Charlotte…I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday…I enjoyed a special Christmas eve tracking Santa with my 8-year old son on the NORAD web site. After tearing through the wrapping paper–made it here to Charlotte yesterday……Caron Butler again went through shooting drills….apparently he looks good..but will be a game time decision with that sprained right ankle that kept him out of Saturday’s loss to the Pacers..and it is encouraging about Antonio Daniels….as we mentioned last week on the blog–his recovery time for his sprained knee closer to two weeks..could be back by the end of the week..BLOGCAST starts at 7…hope you can join us.
5:55PM….Dave Johnson checking in from Charlotte….Caron Butler will start….more updates shortly
6:18PM….So Butler will start…..Daniels is close…maybe Miami or Detroit…and Pecherov is gradually coming along…..
6:24 PM….starters are in…mason, stevenson, haywood, butler, jamison—–wallace okafor, mohammed, richdardson, felton.
7:00..BLOGCAST UNDERWAY

December 26th, 2007 at 9:27 AM
We need Caron. And we are a much better team with Daniels in there.
December 26th, 2007 at 11:21 AM
A Source of the Cavs says that the Wizards have been contacted about a deal including Larry Hughes…
December 26th, 2007 at 12:13 PM
Yeah we clearly need Caron, and especially when Gil’s out. I hope Caron can get back tonight and I hope Antonio will be back to play the heat saturday (he felt against the heat, what could be better than coming back against the heat).
I heard about that Larry Hughes deal on bullets forever and honestly I hope it ain’t true… I don’t think he could get back and play as well as he has when he was a Wizard.
December 26th, 2007 at 12:18 PM
Hughes flourished in Eddie’s offense and along side Gil and Antawn, but, made the stupid mistake of going to a team where his game wouldn’t be used. And why did he make the move? All about the Money.
Hughes was hurt when he left us and has had injury problems every year since. The Wizards no longer need his game, and, certainly don’t need his “contract” imo.
I’m with you Neal! The sooner we get Caron and AD back the sooner I can start breathing again. We need to get these next two games on the road!
I hope everyone had a Wonderful Christmas! I am going to have to wait until the playoffs to see if Santa gave me the present I asked for lol.
December 26th, 2007 at 12:29 PM
no way we get a injury prone guy that left the team for money even if gil dose like him alot that just not going to happen
December 26th, 2007 at 2:37 PM
I’m not going to go to the trouble of figuring out a deal that makes sense for us but it’s safe to say Cleveland wouldn’t go for it. For starters, I think we would get Ilgauskas and give up Thomas. I believe there’s a correlation between a player’s happiness and how much time he spends hurt. But even if Hughes weren’t hurt as much as a Wizard he’s way over paid.
December 26th, 2007 at 4:57 PM
Yep, the salaries fit. Ilgauskas and Hughes for Thomas and Jamison. Advantages for both teams. Ilgauskas, Hughes and Thomas are all under contract through 2009/2010. Cleveland clears a lot of salary room after this year. All depends on how much Hughes is worth.
Rats. Tonight’s game is again televised by CSN+. Can’t get that channel from Cox. The Wizards are dissing their fan base.
December 26th, 2007 at 6:01 PM
I’m glad the Wiz came out and said they aren’t interested so we don’t have to worry about it..
December 26th, 2007 at 6:38 PM
:55PM….Dave Johnson checking in from Charlotte….Caron Butler will start….more updates shortly
6:18PM….So Butler will start…..Daniels is close…maybe Miami or Detroit…and Pecherov is gradually coming along…..
December 26th, 2007 at 6:43 PM
eddie noted…dealing with raymond felton on pick and roll..onr of the keys..BLOGCAST starts at 7
December 26th, 2007 at 6:54 PM
I like Larry a lot, but I agree that he is too injury-prone to invest in. I also can’t really see Ilgauskas in our system.
We do need another guard, however.
December 26th, 2007 at 6:57 PM
Larry is a great guy..but health issues have been unbelievable
December 26th, 2007 at 7:05 PM
glenn consor here: keys to game: expect and execute vs. full court pressure, force Cats to play D, no first side shots, and be disruptive on Felton, expect Roger and Nick to be the defenders.
December 26th, 2007 at 7:25 PM

December 26th, 2007 at 7:50 PM
If “on fire” needs a visual definition I believe tonight’s Roger would make it.
December 26th, 2007 at 7:52 PM
amen lil gil 7 of 8 beyond the arc in first..four from mason
December 26th, 2007 at 7:56 PM
I just checked wheter or not this 41 points quarter was the highest scoring quarter of the Wizards and the Wiz actually scored 44 points in the third quarter of a game against sacramento last year.
December 26th, 2007 at 7:57 PM
most this year
December 26th, 2007 at 7:59 PM
Yeah most this year.
December 26th, 2007 at 8:00 PM
rough start to 2nd..1 made field goal three misses.. and 3 turnovers…but only a 6-2 Bobcats run
December 26th, 2007 at 8:04 PM
Wow after scoring 41 in 1 quarter the Wiz have got only 2 points in the first 6 minutes of the 2nd….
December 26th, 2007 at 8:06 PM

December 26th, 2007 at 8:21 PM
jamsion has the double double..some defsme break down last three poss
December 26th, 2007 at 8:23 PM
ah seems like we get good things going when blatche gets the ball inside 20 feet, and also on defense he seems 2 steps slower than wallace.
December 26th, 2007 at 8:25 PM
yeah blatche is due for a good game..he is having a good night oin defense…team could play better on d..as well as we have pl;ayed on offense….bocats shooting 50%
December 26th, 2007 at 8:30 PM
Well we had a 11 points lead at the end of the first quarter and it’s down to 3 at the half…. the Wiz skipped from 70% from the field in the first quarter to 47% in the second…
December 26th, 2007 at 8:32 PM
What happened? EJ put in the second group and all of the sudden the game turned around and not in a good way..
December 26th, 2007 at 8:33 PM
ended up 7 of 19 in that 2nd quarter.,…goodf thing jamiosn was gettinm it done
December 26th, 2007 at 8:33 PM
What going on with Blatche? He’s not playing the same intensity we saw at the beginning of the season..
December 26th, 2007 at 8:35 PM
We only scored 2 points within a six minutes period. Matter-of-fact, didn’t AJ scored the only ponts in the second quarter.
December 26th, 2007 at 8:36 PM
wiz034 ….did not run the offense well.. ba d shots….and some break downs on defsne
December 26th, 2007 at 8:38 PM
Hey Dave,
one thing I keep seeing is uncontested 3 pointers. That bugs me about this team.
December 26th, 2007 at 8:41 PM
I hope they come out in the third quarter with more intensity and execution.
Never mind the Bobcats are down by one..
December 26th, 2007 at 8:42 PM
hrm a little bit too much one on one right now.
December 26th, 2007 at 8:43 PM
no question, Wiz have to defend the draw and kick game, and stop penetration, and get out on shooters
December 26th, 2007 at 8:46 PM
got tpo get to richardson
December 26th, 2007 at 8:47 PM
man this better not be a cold spell like that bulls game.
December 26th, 2007 at 8:48 PM
Wiz now down by five. It’s obviously Caron is still hurting. Ankles probably stiff.
Like I was aying earlier. They know J Richardson is a three pointer shooter. He’s neen open all night…
December 26th, 2007 at 8:49 PM

December 26th, 2007 at 8:55 PM
What a facial by CB3!!!
December 26th, 2007 at 8:57 PM

Gil is missed on closing out quarters..
December 26th, 2007 at 9:06 PM
butelr getting mnore active kion both ends making a differencer
December 26th, 2007 at 9:07 PM
Up 7.
Caron with nice a quarter. I’d love to see some Blatche with Haywood on the floor to establish the defense.
Hope we will pull away early.
December 26th, 2007 at 9:09 PM
Nice pass by Nick.
December 26th, 2007 at 9:10 PM
butler another steal
December 26th, 2007 at 9:10 PM
haha butler tried to steal it from jamison…hes such a ball hawk..
December 26th, 2007 at 9:11 PM
great steal by young
December 26th, 2007 at 9:12 PM
like how we’re trying to get the ball to the rim now, I bet eddie called that timeout cause butler settled for the mid range jumper instead of driving it in.
December 26th, 2007 at 9:12 PM
Way to attack the boards, get steals, and deflection. Wiz are hustling..
December 26th, 2007 at 9:13 PM
His stats don’t look brigth but Andray is having one of his better games.
Good timeout by Eddie.
December 26th, 2007 at 9:13 PM
Yeah seems like Caron should have swung the ball around to get a better shot..
December 26th, 2007 at 9:14 PM
what a block by blatche…
December 26th, 2007 at 9:15 PM
wow just kidding about blatche not doing well on d.
December 26th, 2007 at 9:17 PM

December 26th, 2007 at 9:24 PM
Deshawn responsible for the last 2 to’s
December 26th, 2007 at 9:24 PM
Guys, Wiz need to spread offense, and backdoor Bobcats, they are denying everything!
December 26th, 2007 at 9:27 PM
great points by DeShawn and Caron.
December 26th, 2007 at 9:28 PM
Great ball movement by the Wizards..
December 26th, 2007 at 9:29 PM
good point..not settling
December 26th, 2007 at 9:29 PM
I thought that was a three by Caron. Did they just give him 2?
December 26th, 2007 at 9:30 PM
Ok…they gave him three
December 26th, 2007 at 9:33 PM
good awareness by haywood, to get down the floor
December 26th, 2007 at 9:34 PM
haywood had an excelenet night
December 26th, 2007 at 9:34 PM
on both ends of the floor
December 26th, 2007 at 9:35 PM
I think these lapses after leads will be addressed after AD gets back in the lineup…I think its just because we do not have a true point guard to settle and get our guys in the right positions for our offense.
December 26th, 2007 at 9:36 PM
ok the refs are killing us now…i heard that slap from md..
December 26th, 2007 at 9:37 PM
I just can’t believe it….
December 26th, 2007 at 9:38 PM
you are right
December 26th, 2007 at 9:39 PM
i think in hindsight, mason should have held back on that 3 when we were up by 9, but with his hot hand this game i’ll give him a pass…I think there was 18 seconds on the shot clock then.
December 26th, 2007 at 9:40 PM
good recovery by blatche.
December 26th, 2007 at 9:40 PM
Are there refs at this game??
December 26th, 2007 at 9:42 PM
i hope blatche is ok…jammed fingers?
December 26th, 2007 at 9:42 PM

December 26th, 2007 at 9:46 PM
what was the city’s dunk like with 27 seconds left?
December 26th, 2007 at 9:48 PM
the citys dunk was a simple one i just think he was trying to get it down to secure the win
December 26th, 2007 at 9:48 PM
that is sooo unlike him…
December 26th, 2007 at 9:49 PM
great win for the wiz. The refs were trying to give it to the cats.
December 26th, 2007 at 9:49 PM
Jamison another double-double..20
December 26th, 2007 at 10:22 PM
Dynamite!
Caught half the game at the neighborhood bar. Good win. We came back strong after they caught up. Shows toughness.
Mason continues to impress. Cool head and great shooting.
Songaila continues not to impress. I trust he’ll get it together down the stretch. He’s a veteran.
Jamison again lost his concentration when he chose to complain about the refereeing rather than play the game. The coaches need to get on him about that. He’s going to cost us big one day if they don’t get him to stop.
I think we’re ready for NJ. Should be a good game.
December 26th, 2007 at 11:04 PM
Hey Neal… I figure if JGarcia can plug TMobile lol I can tell you that I have Directv and we do get CSN+. Just a heads up.
Great Win tonight! Every time they mounted a run we answered it. Very impressive team game. Great individual games from Roger (almost 30) Mason Jr. , Caron, Antawn, and Brendan. I hope Andre’s hand is ok. Is it me or has Songaila turned into a Ruffin clone? If Songaila can play the first minute every game without picking up his first foul I’ll be impressed, surprised, and elated. I’m not worried about his shooting, that will come around. He has to stop fouling so much and so often.
Lets go get the NETS!
December 27th, 2007 at 12:45 AM
Alright well - it feels very relieving to get this win tonight. If we lost this, it would have been a devastation loss. It was a pretty crazy game in general and I think the refs kind of lost control at the end of the game, and got caught up in the emotion of the game. You guys know how I have to gripe about some calls so here I go. There was two at the end of the game that killed me. Actually it may have been in the same play, Im not sure.
1. Blatche got a rebound in the last couple of minutes and got mauled by three Bobcat’s players. No foul call. They scored on that ’steal.’
2. Jamison set up to take a charge in the midst of the craziness and not only did the refs call a foul on AJ but they gave Richardson (I think) a continuation foul. That had to be one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen. The offensive player had his back to the basketball when he backed in to Jamison - there was no way the following shot should have counted.
I just felt like the game was slipping away at the end, and it’s a good thing we pulled it out. A lot of bonehead plays at the end. We need AD back now. People don’t realize that he is a master in those situations and can keep the team under control. He’s very underrated until he’s out with an injury.
Caron hit his first two shots Then missed his next five or six, some of them badly. He recovered very well, as he always seems to these days, and finished with a very nice game. He made some difficult shots, but the one I wanted him to hit most was that up-and-under on one of the fast breaks. Man that was so nice. It just rimmed out. I think he palmed the ball with one hand. Kinda reminded me of Dr. J and his pretty layups.
And last but not least. How about Roger MASON. Man he was smoking in that first quarter. 6-9 from three? I’ll take it. This guy could blossom into a really nice player. What a sweet shot.
Great win, thats all it comes down to. Oh yea - Andray hurt his hand on that great block when he pinned it against glass. I hope its a jammed finger and not broken. Go Wiz! Win our next two vs NJ and Miami who we just beat!
December 27th, 2007 at 9:39 AM
Amen on Blatche. Nothing in the Post, so I guess he’s OK. He stayed in.
December 27th, 2007 at 2:47 PM
Good win. Go Bullets!!!
December 27th, 2007 at 6:16 PM
I just watched the game (wch I’d tivo’d) this morning — mostly i fast-forwarded to tell the truth, but I did watch much of the 2d half and def. the last 8 minutes.
Always great to get a win on the road. Lets go get NJ now.
December 27th, 2007 at 7:48 PM
i DVR the thing my self and there were some crazy calls near the end but we pulled it out so its a good win we need to stop the drive’s in the lane.
December 27th, 2007 at 9:02 PM
http://www.washingtonwizardsblog.com/2007/09/24/mason-re-signed-with-wizards/#comments
based on roger mason’s games and how they’ve translated from practice to the actual NBA games I think we should read how we reacted to his signing. We should remember how he did last year and his percentages. It’s great that with more time on the floor he has rhythm and confidence. We should read that link and other posts we had about him before we knew what kind of game he’d have because the GM’s make the same decisions. That being said I want to start a discussion about our other unknowns Nick Young, Pech, blatche, dmac
December 27th, 2007 at 10:39 PM
Good subject, Bruce.
GrifonRacing, Songaila indeed seems to have attended the Ruffin School of Defense. The good news is that I think it keeps his man from getting comfortable on the offensive end and he doesn’t do well with S guarding him (this is just a subjective impression). The bad news is the fouls. I guess that’s acceptable in that on the other end he’s always been an excellent shooter from mid range and closer, and he passes and rebounds well. But this year he’s shooting 43% instead of 50%. That won’t get it.
So…..if Blatche and Songaila continue to underperform what happens when Pecherov comes back? Tough question for Jordan. I really hope the answer is not to give each of the three a few minutes each game. I think Mason was a good example - we need to give a guy an extended period in a bunch of games so that he gets his rhythm and confidence (in Bruce’s words) before making a judgement about him.
Pecherov has a lot of pro experience behind him. He may be ready for the rotation now. Young and McGuire are just getting their feet wet. I’m not expecting them to be a regular part of the rotation this year. I just hope they learn enough and are comfortable enough to compete for the rotation next year.
December 28th, 2007 at 2:47 AM
I keep hearing Pesherov’s ankle isn’t healing? I hope what i’m reading is wrong, cause, we sure could use him! No news is good news about Andre’s hand I guess. Songaila is worn out from the Euro league, and, will get his second wind (I hope). Caron came back with a vengance, and haven’t heard anything negative about his ankles after the game. AD should be back against either the Nets or Heat… either way, it will be Very Good to have him BACK!
We really aren’t in a bad position right now.
Bruce.. very cool question. For my 2 cents… IF Pesherov can get healthy he can greatly effect our team! He brings so much to the court. Size, rebounding, outside shooting (which will draw most other teams “bigs” out to guard him), a solid base, and fair foot speed. Blatche… Ahhh Blatche. It really depends on which “Andre” shows up? If it’s the Andre of the first 10 games… Other teams be Ware! If it’s the Andre of late… go at HIM.. he will foul you and send you to the line for an “and 1″. I, personally, think Nick Young has earned a few minutes in the rotation. His defense is pretty good, and , that sweet shot of his can’t be kept on the bench. Dmac will probably have to wait until next season. He shows a lot of promise, but, I don’t see him fitting into the rotaton this season.
Roger… ahhhhhh.. Roger! I see him being signed to a mulit-year contract this summer. It would seem, right now, that his decision to turn down a three year guaranteed contract with the Spurs and sign with “us” for one year… may just pay big dividends to both Roger and the Wizards! It’s so nice to see him get some minutes and to watch him play when he gets in a rhythm. Tom… LOL… the “30″ is coming
Go Wiz! We need to beat the Nets AND Heat!
December 28th, 2007 at 7:09 PM
If Roger continues to play at this level, he will no doubt get some nice offers — and he’ll be worth it, and I’ll be glad to see him cash in. If so, I hope it makes sense for the Wizards to keep him.
I too am hoping there is no unexpected delay in getting Pecherov ready to play.
