I agree with another poster. I’d rather not see Blatche take any more outside shots. There are always at least three guys on the court who have a better chance of making those shots.
Tom, months ago you convinced me that Haywood was better than Thomas because of Haywood’s defense. What do you think of Jamison’s defense?
Update on shooting percentages, current season and career:
Haywood 56,53
Butler 52,44
Blatche 49,45
Songaila 45,50
Daniels 44,44
Young 44
Jamison 42,46
Mason 42,35
Stevenson 37,43
Thomas 52
I look for Songaila, Young, Jamison, Mason, and Stevenson to improve those percentages as the season continues.

Game Day! I agree with Tom about tonight being a big game. Really big. We’ve struggled against this team as we all know, but we are better than them now. Better team ball. We are on national TV (TNT) so that’s another issue we gotta deal with. We have a bad history of getting embarrassed when we play a nationally televised game. But I think we will get over both things tonight. The question is – do I watch the game on Comcast with Phil and Buck, or watch on TNT with the option of HD? It’s a tough call.

neal, I’m sure Antawn is a defensive liability against a lot of the 4s in the league. He is smaller, and he has some years on him and has slowed down just a bit. Not to mention that he was probably never a great defender.
All the same, look at what he *does* contribute — his numbers are consistently good. In fact, they are as good as Butler’s almost always. Butler is a more efficient scorer, but Antawn is a big-time rebounder.
The net is that Antawn is a major contributor on this team. I doubt he is going to improve as a defender, but he also doesn’t seem to be slipping in his important skills of scoring and rebounding.

Just two quick things on the Blatche jump shot discussion. First off he works on that baseline jumper all day long, and he’s getting pretty consistent with it. Also, when he makes that jumper it forces a bigger man to come out there and guard him and when they do he can drive past them and score which we have seen a couple of times.
Also, to bring over another topic from yesterday’s postings about Mason. One play that really fired up the team was when Mason dove to the floor on defense and threw the ball off of a Timberwolves player for a turnover. One of those plays that doesn’t show up in the statsheet.

Tom,in the last comment section,my bit of criticism of Antawn brought your ire by inferring that such a suggestion meant that I didn’t know basketball. Antawn provides a double double every night that could not be replaced. All I was saying is that he is the highest paid on the team with the most experience. He is a big contributor but I’m greedy,I want more. This team is one above .500 right now, far surpassing what Gilbert or the “experts” were predicting. It’s because of the performance of the entire team. This team is fun to watch. Sometimes when Gilbert was playing, they were winning but it was just downright frustration to see him always fade in the paint and leave his man wide open. We criticized Gil then, despite his amazing scoring and I have done the same about some of Jameson’s game for the same reason.

I don’t know when the tv schedule was revised, but, I’m sure glad it was! This is a must win and a must see game! Thanks TNT! And..Thanks for the “heads up” Brick!
Ok Hang Me Now lol, but, I think Jamison is actually playing some “defense” this season. He will never shut anyone down, but, he seems to be playing much better position defense than I’ve seen from him in the past. More guys are passing back out with him on them than I think I’ve ever seen before.

Hey Beeb — you are right, and it’s all good. I’m just defensive about Antawn, who for some reason gets the most criticism around here, at least more than I think he deserves.
Comment from Brickjp
Time December 13, 2007 at 12:36 PM
Griffon – I totally agree with you about Jamison. His positioning has been better, and he’s been staying in front of his man more effectively. Not to mention he’s been ripping down tough rebounds like it’s nobody’s business. I can’t get enough of AJ. He does get a lot of undeserved criticism. If you can’t appreciate his game, then you probably will never like basketball. Very valuable player, without a doubt.
With that said, Caron is the man! Can’t stress enough how happy I am that he came to DC. Great guy, great player. Always manages to crack me up too. Call me crazy, but I think overall he’s better than Gilbert is right now. He’s extended his range which makes him deadly. He feels he can make any shot, or beat his man. The game has looked so easy to him lately. His pump fakes, change of direction, speed and quickness are very difficult to defend. Plus I love when he cuts the passing lane and gets one of those free one-handed dunks at the other end. I think he gets about one a game at least.

Ask not what the team can do for me but Ask what I can do for the team!
This is the mindset that needs to be applied if we are going to have any chance tonight!
Ask oneself will I take a cruching charge from 400 lb Shaq Diesel or will I move out of the way!
Ask one self will I plan good zone defense or will I slack off a bit!
Ask oneself is it the lights, cameras action that has my head spinning or will I stay focus for 48 minutes!
Ask will I meet Alonzo above the rim or will I let him dunk in my face.
There are many tough decisions we must make so it time to take one for the team!

CLUB MED
These are my Wizards who are right now in the middle of the pack as far as scoring.
Nick Little Jordan Young : 7.2
Maddog Stevenson: 7.0
AB Blatche: 7.0
Darius Songalia: 5.9
Roger Rolls Royce Mason: 5.2
Who will step out of this club and into the Platinum Club with a scoring avg of 10 ppg.
I feel Stevenson and Young have a very good chance but who knows!

I think when you are the highest paid player on the team, making considerably more than 2 players who were all-stars last year, it is only natural that Jamison is going to have a lot of high expectations set by fans, coaches and the front office.
so while i agree that his rebounding and points have been valuable this year, he is getting franchise-player money, and i agree with the “detractors” on this point, that he needs to be providing a more complete game in return. If Antawn really lays it out on defense, the rest of the team will HAVE to.
on the Blatche jumpshot, i think he needs to keep shooting it. period. he is a natural scorer, he can draw big men away from the rim and if they have to honor that shot he can beat them off the dribble and attack the hole or deliver an assist. i will say that he has been shooting the ball too flat. he needs to get more leg into those jump shots and put some air under the ball.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 13, 2007 at 3:18 PM
Jamison is in the last year of his biggest pro contract, so he makes lots of money. Caron will be making that kind of money (probably more, as salaries grow) at some point too — do you really think he’ll be a better player than he is now? I doubt it.
In other words, salary is irrelevant.

AJ is doing what AJ does best, rebounding, scoring, and because of his usual athletism, giving teams a nightmare. He has never been tough on defense we all know that, but this year, he has stepped up his defensive game. It’s only some of the fans who are griping about Tawn, not the coaches, and it’s definitely not his teamates. They know what he brings to the court night in and night out.
The game tonight will be a gut check for this team, I think they can pull it out. They just have to continue to play the defense and with the confidence they have been playing with so far, it has worked in their favor. Haywood has to bring it tonight, playing against Shaq and Zo is no joke. That’s a big task. Stevenson probably will guard Wade, if he can slow down a little bit that should get us a win.
Do we know if D Song is going to play tonight? For this game we’re going to need everyone. Looking forward to seeing how NY1 and mason perform..
LET’S GO WIZ!!!

The coaching staff will most definitely have a short strand of string on there fish poles tonight. I would suggest everyone play within themselves and that means very little chance for errors/turnovers. The team has all the intangibles working for them such as toughness, chemistry, and a demeanor which commands respect. We have to show them our disciplined approach and not knuckle under when they will certainly make a all out run to the finish line! The free throws will always be a key so Hack a Shaq will definitely be in order and hopefully the Big Guy only makes 50% from the charity stripes! We can’t be fazed by Miami and just play our team ball for a chance to win! I will be giving praise to all members who do outstanding jobs in the Keys To The Game!

Big game tonight against our arch-rivals (or is that Cleveland?).
I am curious as to the defensive game plan that Ayers has cooked up for tonight. The usual Miami game is that in the fourth quarter all plays go through Wade. Either he drives and looks for a foul (and generally gets them) or he looks to drive and dish. Does Ayers decide to double team Wade in the 4th quarter to disrupt their game plan? I would give it a try. I also might try a bit of zone here and there.
The Wiz have a chance for a great win tonight because the Heat are playing their best ball of the year and because of that beating them would be all the more impressive. I look for Jamison to get his 3-point stroke back tonight (he’s due) and lead us to a win. I’m sure Haywood is ready to go after Shaq. One thing Brendan has going for him is that he can make free throws and Shaq can’t.
Let’s go Wiz and bring it home!

KEYS OF THE GAME
The Wizards experienced what I would call a heavy weight tittle fight.
The Miami Heat hit us with a haymaker then looked to see if we were going to fall!
However we “Wizards” showed toughness and showed they can take a elbow from
Shaq Diesel and keep playing at a high level. In the past we would have put our heads
down and started to leave out of the exit with our heads down! KUDOS to the Veteran 5
which proved there worth. The starters made all the right plays at the exact time for the win. I would like to show some love by giving out al the awards now!
The Award for Zero Bonehead Turnovers: Maddog Stevenson,Blatche,D. Songalia,Dmac
The 5 or more rebounds Award: Haywood”10″, Jamison”16″, Butler”10″
The Unselfish Award for 5 assists or more:Daniels,Caron Tough Juice Butler
The Block Party Awards: Jamison with 3 are you kidding me!
The Steal Awards: Caron Tough Juice Butler,Maddog Stevenson,Haywood,D. Songalia
The Freethrow Supremacy Award: Maddog Stevenson
Finally the Outstanding Player Of The Game Award: D Maddog Stevenson
I hope Stevie Wonder keeps this up through the playoffs! Great Job you still
have critics so the best way to shut them up is to go all out!

WONDERFUL WIN.
I love it that the Wiz show toughness in the 4th quarter. We had several years where we often wilted in crunch time.
Gotta hand the awards to Stevenson & Haywood, but the whole team played well. With the possible exception of Blatche. He’s got a lot to learn. I hope he learns faster than it looks now. Is it just me, or is it taking him longer than most?
Next is Sacramento at home. Got to win games like that.

well haywood outplayed shaq. I think he’s one the best defensive centers out there. With the continued use of Haywood on offense our team is better. He’s bigger and stronger than most of those guys out there. He’s big enough to contain shaq and other elite post players. Andrew Bynums a good young guy as well. But I’m glad this will slowly quiten all those guys who say that wizards big men suck. He is playing above the rim this season and I’m glad. He’s been a huge part of our success.
Go wiz
Comment from GrifonRacing
Time December 14, 2007 at 1:26 AM
Bruce? “all those guys that say the Wizards big men suck”? Who Da Heck would that be? LOL. Haywood is having a career year, and, Blatche although a bit rough around the edges (he is still a “kid” Neal) is showing what he should have had the chance to show last season. I still say… at the time, given all the intangables at the time… Blatche would have better than Haywood against the Lebron’s in last years playoffs. Ilgauskus was killing Haywood and Blatche continued to sit? Oh well spilt milk.
Stevenson will be praised for his point total… game total, but, that wasn’t his best contribution! Wade had 11 total shots and committed 8 turnovers!!!!! Agreed… Caron and Mason contributed to that too, but, Stevenson did most of it!
Haywood… YOU BEAST YOU! Put in Shaq…. Put in Zo…. no matter!!! Wow what a Game Bubba! How nice is it that Haywood came to play this season?
19 assists (I think)… we get close to or over 20 … we win.

someone has to say it! y cant we play like a team when gil is out there! kenny and chuck said it best… gil is a two gaurd. let deshawn play point. something has to move! gil is like t-mac, vince, and iverson. there so gifted offensively but they do not make their team better! when they play terrible their team loses. it does not matter who u place beside them. so gil has to change roles. iverson had hughes, webber, iguodala, stackhouse, and complained that he had no help. now he is with denver surrounded by stars and still there is something missing……. arenas has to find his niche and make this team a team with his contributing to that. or else he will never quite get there! I am a wiz fan true indeed. but i wanna do more than just make the playoffs! and as a fan i am saying this because i HATE TO SEE MY TEAM LOSE!!!!! winning here and there is ok but without a ring we can never be GREAT!
Comment from brian
Time December 14, 2007 at 2:57 AM
before somebody jumps down my throat know this. is shooting gaurd is expected to be able to shoot. gil does that much better than deshawn with one hand! but when that two guard does not make steals, rebounds, and assists it is okay as long as he is making shots! for example what was reggie miller good for? making 3’s and nothing more! ray allen, mike redd, mike miller, ben gordon, jj reddick there all shooters and nothing more! just like gil! a point guard distributes the ball, shows heart, takes it to the rim, shoots the open shot, creates opportunities for others, plays good defense and plays the lanes for fast breaks. pg is simply a utility position and deshawn has more under his belt than gil. and does not mind playing his role. he knows gil is the shooter. deshawn can defend the many talented point gaurds and shooting gaurds in this league and gil cannot. now of course turnovers may come into play with deshawn but hey cant have ya cake and ice cream!
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time December 14, 2007 at 8:38 AM
neal, I thought Andray played well! Yes, he made some errors, reflected in his getting 4 fouls in less than 14 minutes, but he was 3-3 from the floor 2-2 from the line, no turnovers, and he grabbed 4 rebounds. I thought I saw at least one block from him too, but it’s not recorded on his line.
Despite not shooting well, both Jamison and Butler had big games. I love the will to win Butler shows in the 4th quarter. Haywood was terrific. I don’t think Shaq has much left either. Time for him to retire and become a police chief.
Roger Mason missed a lot of open shots, but his defense and his movement without the ball were terrific. He looks *much more comfortable* out there than he did when the season began.
Man of the hour, however, was DeShawn. Every shot that left his hand looked like it was going nowhere but the bottom of the net, and he was extremely active defensively.
What a gratifying win! I felt like I was holding my breath through the entire game.
Comment from Wiz034
Time December 14, 2007 at 8:48 AM
I just have to say WOW!! what a game. DeShawn was unconscious last night and he held Wade to under twenty points. I never thought I would see the day when Brendan would handle the Diesel but he did. It was awesome how Jamison and Caron took over at the end of the game. I hope D Song is ok.
I was reading on the HEAT board on yesterday where they were saying the Wiz’s game would be a cakewalk..Way to prove them wrong. But on TNT Barkley did say he expected the Wiz to win. He was right for once *LOL*
All I know is this team is playing team ball right now. When Gil comes back I hope they don’t change their style of play but Gil will change his.
WE BEAT MIAMI!!
PS. What was up with with all of the Miami commerical?
Comment from neal
Time December 14, 2007 at 9:28 AM
Yes, Jamison seems to be playing a little better D this year. He’s gone from consistently poor to usually mediocre. But everything else is terrific, as said above. He’s overpaid, but I don’t begrudge him that.
I too hope Songaila is OK.
Just have to keep playing Blatche. I do get frustrated. He makes a terrific play probably no other team member could make, then follows it with a foul no other team member would make.
Comment from GrifonRacing
Time December 14, 2007 at 10:10 AM
Brian… there is one that has this board at about a 50/50 split. I agree with you, so you are already in trouble lol. I have always thought that AD should be running the team and Gil should be the 2. I think if Gil played the 2 his numbers would “increase” not decrease. The only negative aspect I can think of would be on defense. We didn’t get to see much of Gil in Coach Ayer’s system, but, he isn’t known much for his defense. I don’t think Gil could have shut Wade down like Stevenson did.
It will be very interesting to see how and where Gil fits into the team when he comes back.

ok, so i may be one of the biggest haywood detractors, but if he continues this level of play, i may have to come around.
i thought it was a fun game to watch last night. stevenson was unconscious. my only disappointments were:
1) not seeing any of nick young
2) letting quinn get 22 points
I like Daniels on offense. He knows the sets, and controls the game. He can get to the rim and knock down shots. But how does he let chriss quinn shoot so many wide open 3’s?

I have to agree with you Millie Mill. Haywood should get Most Improved Player..
I don’t know about NY1 playing last night. I personally think it would have been too much for him being a rookie. Blatche played some minutes but not as much as he usually does. I think this was a game for the Vets. EJ wasn’t taking any chances..
Sometimes AD makes me cringe with his long range shots. I just wish he would continue to take it to the hoop, though I know you should change your game, but those 3ptrs he attempts makes me nervous..

Probably 3 or 4 players voted in will be on the inactive list if history is any indicator. I’m guilty as well. I vote for Arenas every night LOL.

Dave,go have lunch at the Ritz. Poolside definitely good views and good food. It makes us all a little jealous. Here’s to hoping we shake that Miami hold a bit tonight. It’s funny, when Gilbert went down, he said that he hoped we’d only be 4-5 games back from the playoffs,so that they could make a run when he got back. Now, I think that the team has higher aspirations.
