Gameday Charlotte

10:06 am….Dave Johnson will be joining us later, but we just received official word that Gilbert Arenas did not make the trip with the team and will be out for tonight’s game. Also, Brendan Haywood is a game-time decision following his ankle sprain last night.

10:20 AM—Good morning from Charlotte..we got here about 1 am last night….Bobcats had last night off..so this is not one that works in favor of us onthe schedule..but it cuts both ways in the NBA and we get the schedule breaks too…certainly a bummer about Gilbert’s knee…he did have that MRI that didn’t show any damage…but it’s ceretianly been frustrating for him and the team..talked to Phil Hubbard in the post game and there was every indication Gil was going to play last night until right before game time….But ttake heart in the way we are playing..just good team basketball…Gilbert is missed…but the team has been managing games well.. and it did start with the Hawks win and Gil’s success in quarterbacking the team in that game…check back later

6:54 PM…Dave Johnson and Glenn Consor here courtside…you have probabaly heard the news ..Gilbert Arenas is expected to miss three months..had surgery a partial tear of his left medial meniscus…Eddie Jordan talks about it at 7PM with the start of the radio broadcast and you can listen online…no Brendan Haywood tonight sprained ankle–though he did dress for warmups…starters…daniels stevenson blatche, butler, jamison…. felton richardson brezec, okafor and wallace

We have to stay true to ourselves and thats massive amounts of assists and huge
camaraderie.Look what we have done with limited bonehead plays and cohesion amongst the ranks pertaining to balance scoring. Everyones happy and everyone believes in themselves so way change anything, just keep doing what you been doing the last five games. The young guys have to play off the bench cheers because thats all your going to get. I just want that bench to be jumping like its a championship game and every play counts for something! The freethrow shooting has been excellent so why change anything because your on foreign courts. We cannot afford a letdown because we have not even peaked yet! I really feel the Lakers and My Beloved Wizards are playing the Best Basketball Right Now so lets keep the strike rolling!
Good Luck and Semper Fidelis “Always Faithful”

Feels nice to get such a great win and have a game the next night. So exciting. Bummer about Gil again, but I’m liking what I’m seeing from this team. Keep the assists up and the turnovers low, and well be fine. It will be tough to match the shooting last night, but last night we were straight up on FIRE.

Looking forward to see Blatche get some huge blocks tonight. He is coming into his own. I love his touch on the ball. Man this is great! Lets go WIZ!

wallace does tend to have good games against us. but i think having more versatility on defense and using a combination of butler, blatche, and dmac on wallace can slow him down.

this certainly wasn’t an issue last night, but in the past this wizards team has struggled running the offense without gilbert in the game. even though he is a score first player, he makes things happen and a team can run their offense through him.

with jamison and butler, that is not so much the case. especially with jamison. they are much more effective when they are not the primary option and forced to setup other people. they can really nail the open jumpers though. and shine when the defenses are not focused on stopping them.

personally, and yes i do have an unusually high opinion of him, i do think that blatche is the type of player that you can run your offense through. he has very good ball handling and passing skills. he is usually a mismatch for the guy trying to guard him. and he can score, so you’ve got to stay honest. without gilbert in there, blatche really helps to keep the offense running and gunning.

This will be a good game tonight I just hope the Wizards don’t get too happy by winning five in a row. The bench did very well last night. The differance I see in this bench compared to last year’s is more control. Last years bench would have turned the ball over at least 15 times in the fourth quarter. I still think we need to sign another back up point guard, and hope OP comes back soon.

AUNDRA are you in the Marines? I haven’t heard anyone say Semper Fidelis in a long time.

another thing. we did a great job of attacking the basket last night! i’m not sure if it was a result of our aggressive play, or philly’s horrific defense, or both. but i do want to see us show that same aggression and attack the rim again tonight. do not just settle for the outside jumpers because there wont be too many nights were the team shoots better than 60%

Words of Warning to Blatche and Nick Young and the Wizards. It seems we are getting more and more coverage from national syndicated networks such as SI Sports Illustrated and AP Associated Press not to mention Washington Post and Times. We must not forget Coach Jordans roller coaster illustration. What goes up comes down faster so be extremely humble and have some class as if we are San Antonio Spurs. We must be tight lipped and really watch what we say because it could bite you in the buttocks quickly! It’s Ok to give interviews just try and stay under the radar and act like its not your first time being interviewed! Finally give all the credit to the coach and his coaching staff because they like to hear that form time to time!

Uh oh, Gilbert re-injured his knee and had surgery for a torn meniscus, just as wermol says. He can return to practice in 3 months — i.e. about March 1. “Return to practice” is not the same as return to the game floor, so it is probably best to assume that he is out for more or less the whole regular season.

A terrible thing to happen to him, to the team, and to us fans. I don’t know what this will do to his value on the open market — remember, he was planning to opt out. Maybe this will change his decision.

Big pressure on Antonio, and big pressure too on the rookie Nick Young. As to Roger, he hasn’t done much right this season; here’s his chance, but I’m not counting on much.

We are down to 11 players — 10, actually, until Pech returns — *surely* we are going to have to pick someone up somehow.

Honestly Wiz4life, that’s the least we deserve after getting all these “things” happening to us, what else now?? I was just watching Caron vlog before, hearing him talking about how we got King Kong off our back right now, and I was like, damn he’s right we might get out of trouble! and finnaly what, Gil out for three month (and about his personal life if you check his blog he might really not be well at all right now). At least as you mentionned we’re gonna see more of our bench, and then more of the rookies and therefore they’ll improve, and when Nacho Libre get’s back we beat everyone and we win the trophy.

From the Post

“-Center Brendan Haywood will not play tonight against Charlotte (left ankle sprain). He said he may go Friday night against Golden State but just couldn’t push off it well enough to go today.”

Comment from shapiro1991
Time November 21, 2007 at 6:50 PM

This injury could honestly result in an entire change in the team and the players that we have for next year and the near future. The organization could turn from being in the hunt for the top spots in the East, to rebuilding with only CB3 on the team next year. Just this injury could cost the Wizards so much if they do not stay above .500 while Gil is out. I hope this is not going to happen, but if the team starts to falter in Arenas’ absence, Gilbert would most likely buy out if he doesn’t believe the team is moving towards a championship and Jamison previously said he thought that this would be his last year with the Wizards.

RATS

OK, Abe I couldn’t believe you could go with 12 active players, just because of the few luxury tax dollars it would have cost you. Now you’ve got 10, and only 9 for tonight. You can’t take it with you. Let EG go get the best guard(s) available.

Comment from shapiro1991
Time November 21, 2007 at 6:58 PM

Only 9 active players tonight as Haywood will miss the game as well… At least we will able to see the rooks develop more so that we are “ready to rule” when Gil comes back. This is just so unfortunate but I think that just as Gil said in his blog, when he rehabbed I think he went over the top with the running up the stands and running with those parachutes and that is what cost him once the season started. Since he had never had any serious injuries he wanted to get back in it and rehab so fast, it ended up costing him and possibly our team for the future.

Blatche and Daniels seem to be filling in better even than expected. the concern now becomes what production can we get off the bench? The six points that we got in the first half just aren’t going to be enough. we need songalia to step up like the veteran he is, and we need young and mcguire to grow up real fast and provide solid minutes. don’t try to do anything special, just solid minutes.

Can we get an update on Pecherov?

Comment from wermol

dutch fan, it is probably a case of me overreacting, but a couple of questionable at best calls seemed to go bobcats way and it seemed to me like it was always at times that could have been a change of momentum in our favor…

And the last one was a goaltending that didn’t get called…that one was pretty obvious it hit the glass…

Down 2 at the half. This is going to be a *tough* game to pull out. We’ll need Caron and Antawn to tighten up in the 2d half, and we’ll need Nick to contribute more than he has so far.

This is Nick’s first performance under pressure; lets see how he responds. So far, he’s 0-3 and has 2 fouls.

Can we get something from Dominic? At the half, he’s got one turnover and one rebound; we’ll see…

Comment from neal
Time November 21, 2007 at 8:39 PM

Yes, I think Jamison plays better when Arenas doesn’t play. And if you listen to what Jamison says in interviews, he would like for Arenas to focus more on assists and less on shooting.

Not televising the game sucks. Seems like we’ve already missed as many games as all last season. Does someone think something else will get more viewers? CSN+? Is that a mythical channel?

Daniels has always filled in great. And it’s hard to believe how quickly Blatche is developing.

The referees show consistent inability to call offensive fouls when wizards are on defense, yet they seem to have no problem with it when we attack…and yet again at a VERY crucial moment.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time November 21, 2007 at 10:21 PM

ummmmh…. Antawn Jamison 27 points and 12 rebounds, rickie.

Antawn, Antonio, Andray and Caron all had really good games — they were all about equivalent. Songaila was ok; he fouls too much. Dominic didn’t contribute.

The combined lines of Stevenson, Young and Mason equaled zero. Even with Caron playing minutes at the 2, we are in need of more guard contribution if we are going to compete with Gilbert gone.

Still… a great win tonight.

Comment from sagaliba
Time November 21, 2007 at 10:47 PM

Not just point-wise. Mason is not a PG, and AD cannot play 48 minutes, or heavy minutes every game. This is quite evident when Charlotte started to press near the end.

WINNING WITHOUT ARENAS AKA AGENT ZERO CAN BE AS SIMPLE AS

A B C.

A WOULD STAND FOR ASSISTING ONES TEAMMATE EARLY AND OFTEN

B WOULD STAND FOR BOXING OUT FOR REBOUNDS & BLOCKING SHOT ATTEMPTS

C WOULD STAND FOR SEEING THE BIG PICTURE WHICH IS HAVING

EXCELLENCE IN YOUR FREE THROW SHOOTING
EXCELLENCE IN YOUR FIELD GOAL SHOOTING
EXCELLENCE IN LIMITING TURNOVERS
CONFIDENCE IN YOUR GAME!

yeah we need some more power that’s 4 sure it took 39 points from Caron to get this done and a over time not only that but AJ hit for 27 they cant do that every game but we were Haywood less as well witch made some of the big ball we have been playing lately non existent

Hope they can contine this so we be ready for the spurs, and Dallas

Well. Went to a bar to watch the game and they didnt even have Comcast. I was very annoyed. I also previously heard about Gil. That hurts. Even so, I am liking this team right now. I’m loving this team right now. Sounds like we missed chances to put it away, but we got the W on the second of a back to back on the road missing two of our starters. Thats heart.

Looking forward to the games this weekend. I will probably miss Friday’s game :( but should catch the one on Sat.

CB is the MAN! I cant stop saying this. I wish I could have seen his performance tonight. He is definitely my favorite player and it looks like he had one of his best games of his career. And how bout AB with 5 blocks?! Love to see that stat. Love my Wiz.

I watched the game in a bar. This bar I get out to in gaithersburg televises the game. The whole time i was just thinking about how many people we’ve lost atleast for this game. Also how thin we are at the center spot until pech returns. Hopefully brendans sprain heals. I’d rather have arenas healed in 3 months and have him for the rest of his career than hobbling the rest of this season plus some undetermined time while not fully recovered. I guess this gives us time to give our young guys time on the floor. To see how much we can win without gil. If at the end of this we have a bad record atleast we can draft early and get a critical piece. If we have a good record we will then be a good team then have the addition of gil, ready for the playoffs. It was a tight win. Have you guys noticed that our two’s are playing the point as well. I’ve seen deshawn, nick and roger mason bring the ball up

we are thin at the center as of now. Once Blatche picked up his 4th foul the cats started walzing through the middle. Also I’d much rather have had nick young on the court when caron was going for the buzzer beater. Just because we needed only one point to win. he could get a clear shot at the basket. I suppose maybe they were afraid of rookie mistakes but still. I think he would have given us a decent shot because he is creative offensively.
I think we’ll be ok with a true pg in AD. Only issue is who will back him up. Nick young has an Ok enough handle but thats not his true position. I suppose its a crash course in NBA for him. Once Haywood and Pech come back we’ll have depth in the big man area and atleast we’ve determined that Blatche can be solid for us and he isn’t some mirage for now. A part of me wants to Jockey to get michael Beasley somehow. IF its via tanking or some trade at the end of the season. He can be our SF/ PF for the future. He’s a franchise player IMO. Far more aggresive IMO than durant

Comment from AUNDRA
Time November 22, 2007 at 2:45 AM

BRUCE O Ican give you a 1000 reasons why we should be losing but I am not going to give you one of them. Right now it crunch time for this Washington Organization so everyone has to be a multitasker and be able to do a multiple of tasks in order to survive the top feeder fish like San Antonio,Dallas,Phoenix and Boston. We have done well with the bottom feeders such as Indianas, Philadelphia and we must not show fear because thats what everyone is looking for! This next week ahead starting Saturday against Memphis will tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth about the character and drive I see when I look in there eyes.So it doesn’t surprise me to see the Masons and Young multitasking while playing the point but what I see is only the drive they appear to have any no one seems to no why!

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time November 22, 2007 at 7:46 AM

I’m sure Ernie is looking for some way to add to the roster. We have 10 players; only 6 of them can be counted on to contribute night in night out. That’s too tough.

Now… if all our dreams come through immediately (Mason is adequately solid; Young scores in bunches; McGuire plays the game at a level equal to his athleticism; Songaila is an adequate solid veteran), and if Pecherov can command minutes when he returns — why then, all is well.

Daniels can play 30 terrific minutes — asking him to do what he did last night, night in and night out, is just too much. And we certainly can’t afford for him to be injured!

So… whether it’s Earl Boykins or whoever, we definitely gotta have another guard.

Comment from neal
Time November 22, 2007 at 10:14 AM

Like the guy who commented in the Post, I think Arenas was a two-edged sword. He didn’t trust his teamates enough. However, he’s the biggest talent we have and I think he’s gradually maturing and looking to assist a little more and not take shots just because they’re there. Although we can still be good w/o him, I think to reach the next level we need a mature Arenas running Jordan’s system, and so comfortable in himself that he doesn’t feel he needs to prove anything anymore.

We’re in a fix because Pollin wouldn’t spend a little luxury tax. If we had started the year with another player or two (and we certainly could have had them for the minimum), they would already know the system. Now, we’ll be bringing in someone who will have a considerable adjustment period. Shortsidedness. What were the odds we wouldn’t have a rash of injuries? Small, I’ll bet. Almost every team has them at some point and you have to go to the bench warmers.

Comment from BruceO
Time November 22, 2007 at 4:30 PM

I don’t think its that he didnt trust his team. i don’t think we should be waiting for arenas to go down to start saying we felt different about him. He stepped in when we needed scoring and was an adequate distributor. My only thing is they scoring threat IMO should come from all five positions like it is now. I’m actually comfortable giving our guys alot of run. I’m comfortable with nick young, Blatche, pech and Dmac getting alot of burn. That might mean more young bringing the ball, more Dmac at the two or three and Pech playing in different positions.
I think we should be fine kinda. We have in one way or another run aot of shooting gaurds at the point. Gil has a more SG mentality, larry hughes also was a sg who could play point, we’re trying the same with roger mason, nick young, Deshawn was being groomed to play point in Utah, caron can step in to play the two when one of our two’s plays the one. If anything I see a bigger lineup. If they don’t do that well I’m fine with it. Our really big moves come during summer IMO. At that point hopefully our young guys have gained experience they might not have had a chance to do so, we have Arenas back healthy, we have free cap space from resigning AJ at less and we have an eye on this draft that has some gems.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time November 23, 2007 at 5:38 PM

Gilbert is a great player and teammate. You’d have to be nuts to think we’re better off without him!

His absence, however, does make things intriguing for a while — will Ernie add someone? will the rookies step up? is Andray as good as he seems to be? how will AJ hold up? is Caron likely to be even better w/ the pressure on him? will Brendan keep up the pace he’s set for himself? what about Pech — is he a wild card?

So far this season has been a *wild ride* — and it’s hardly gotten started!
