Game Day Philadelphia
Dave Johnson now here courtside..read below…no Gil tonight….Earl Monroe at half
Hey Everyone, I’m sure Dave will be joining us soon. In the mean time here are some fun facts heading into tonight’s game against the Sixers.
* This game marks the first of four meetings between Washington and Philadelphia this season. The Wizards and 76ers will meet again on November 30 and February 5 in Philadelphia, and on April 12 in Washington.
* After sweeping Philadelphia last season (3-0), the Wizards are looking to extend their three-game winning streak versus the 76ers. Washington has also won three straight at home against Philadelphia.
* Washington hosts Philadelphia with its four-game winning streak on the line. A win against the 76ers will give Washington its first five-game winning streak since December 21-29 of last season (@ SAC, @ PHX, MEM, @ CHA, ORL).
* In 82 games last year, the Wizards held the opposition to 90 points or less five times. This season Washington has already held five opponents to 90 or less; including four straight. The last time the Wizards held five consecutive opponents to 90 points or less was in Dec. ‘01 when they did so to seven consecutive opponents (7-0) from Dec. 11-22.
* Brendan Haywood has recorded four consecutive games with 10+ rebounds for the first time since Nov. 23– Dec. 1, 2004. With 10+ rebounds tonight, Haywood will record his first ever streak of five straight games with 10+ rebounds.
* Haywood is one of just 13 players across the NBA averaging at least 10 points and 10 rebounds per game.
* After losing their first five games this season, the Wizards have since rebounded to win their last four contests. The NBA record for a winning streak immediately following a losing streak of 5+ games to start a season is held by the 2001-02 Philadelphia 76ers; a team that started the season 0-5 and then won seven straight games to improve to 7-5.
* After scoring a season-low 82 points on Nov. 3 versus Orlando, Washington has increased its scoring output from the previous game in each of the last six games…85 @ NJ…92 vs. DEN…101 @ ATL…103 vs. IND…105 @ MIN…109 vs. POR.
* Last season vs. Philadelphia…The Wizards swept the season-series (3-0)….On Feb. 14, 2007, Andray Blatche recorded his first career double-double (11 points and 10 rebounds), as well as a career-high four blocked shots vs. the 76ers…DeShawn Stevenson averaged 17.7 points per game.
* In Washington’s last game (W, 109-90 vs. POR, 11/17)…Washington’s 16 offensive rebounds boosted its league-leading offensive rebounds per game average to 14.2 off. rpg…Antawn Jamison led Washington with a season-high 30 points…Jamison’s 30 points and team-high 11 rebounds marked his fifth double-double of the season…Brendan Haywood’s season-high 17 points along with his 10 rebounds marked his team-leading sixth double-double of the season…Antonio Daniels recorded his first double-double of the season with 10 points and a season-high 10 assists…Rookie Nick Young contributed a career-high 17 points, and was one of five Wizards (Jamison, Haywood, Daniels, Mason) with a season-high in scoring…The Wizards 62 points in the second half marked a new Wizards season-high for points in a half…Washington’s bench contributed a season-best 39 points…Washington also established new season-highs with eight three-pointers and a19-point victory margin; and a season-low with just nine turnovers.
* Wizards-76ers connections…Wizards assistant coach Randy Ayers spent six-plus seasons as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers’ coaching staff and served as Head Coach of the Sixers for a stint in 2003-04…76ers big man Calvin Booth appeared in 77 games over the last two seasons with the Wizards; his second stint with the team…Booth also played for Washington during the 1999-00 and 2000-01 seasons after the Wizards made Booth the 35th overall pick in the second round of the 1999 NBA Draft…76ers’ assistant coach Jim Lynam was Washington’s Head Coach in 1994-95, 1995-96 and part of the 1996-97 NBA season. Lynam’s son, Jim Lynam III, currently serves as Washington’s video coordinator.
6:10PM….Dave Johnson checking in courtside…all set for Sixers and Wizards…as alwways we will be taking your posts during the broadcast….big thrill just momoents ago Earl Monroe is here tonight…he will have his Bullets jersey number 10 retired Saturday December 1st…he told some great stories and relayed his fondness for the Bullets franchise which launched his career….he will be joining us at half time for the radio broadcast if you have any questions…..

Does anyone ever watch Wizards games on Comcast On Demand after the broadcast? They keep advertising that they are available “one hour after the end of the game for 24 hours or until the next game.” Every time I try to watch one, all I get is the one-minute commercial, but no game. I called them, and they have no idea what I’m talking about. ?????

RE: The Haywood Conversation
Take a look at Dalembert’s numbers. He plays a little less than Haywood, has about the same points, more blocks, a better free throw percentage and a few rebounds less per game.
Guess what, I don’t want him on our team either. Is anyone saying that Samuel Dalembert is playing great?

^ We get it. You don’t like Haywood. Like it or not, the level he is playing at right now is all we need from him. Currently, he is a presence in the lane on defense and he is getting boards on both ends. Add 10 points to that and Haywood is doing everything we need him to. I don’t see why any Wiz fan should be complaining about Haywood’s play right now. Right now he is a good center in this league and on our team. I’ll be happy with that. Let’s just hope he can keep this up.

Haywood isn’t an all-star, but he’s better than he’s ever been, and I think at least average for a starting center. Better than average on rebounds. He’s a force on D and now showing that he has to be accounted for on offense. He’s handling those little handoffs inside that he used to fumble his first couple of years. He’s playing better team basketball on both ends of the court, it seems to me.
Let’s sock it to ‘em tonight.

“A few rebounds less per game” is no small thing. Use the Win Score method from http://www.dberri.blogspot.com (i.e. the Wages of Win method) to compare the two of them over the season so far, and I’d like to know what you get.
Right now, Brendan Haywood is playing like one of the top centers in the league. He has that ability, I believe; I think he can sustain an excellent season, and that would make *a big difference* to the Wizards. That’s all that counts.

IMO he is playing like one of the top centers in the east. The fact that dalembert is on that ballot and haywood is not is a testament to the fact that no one expected him to be playing this good. During the offseason we were all talking about how Brendan is definately a better center than Etan and this team does better when he’s on the floor. Some people wanted to trade him but for what we pay him and his effect on the game I thought that was foolish. Now he’s proving to everyone that he is that guy. He is closer to having more double doubles than last season. And 30 minutes per game is not alot. You can’t say look at his minutes as the reason he’s getting a double double. Watch the game and see how he’s playing now. Did you watch the game against garnett, or JOneal or Dhoward? These are all stars and you could see his advantages over them sometimes in strength, sometimes in height.
And the effect on this team is defensively he’s the anchor. People don’t stroll into the lane easily. Also he backs up people when they’re beat. I’m all for playing Blatche at the PF and Jamison at the SF in lineups where we are resting deshawn because the overall effect is defensively we’re better. We’re better rebounders on both ends of the court and we’re scoring more in the paint. I also like the fact that with a bigger lineup we’re adding post up options to each players game.
Haywood is going to do well because with randy ayers coaching defensively his strengths are going to be utilized. Also Hopla is helping his shooting. His free throws are going in now that Haywood is finishing on his toes.

I think Brendan has really stepped up this year b.c. he’s been giving the chance to prove himself and i think hes done just that. I just hope he continues to play like hes playin right now and we will we set for the center position…………..hey has any1 heard nything about Pecherov? i mean i havent heard anything on his injury status in the past few weeks

BrickJP, it remains to be seen if all we need from our starting center is what Haywood is giving us right now. I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree for now.
I’ve been a Bullets fan for far too many years and cheered through too many 20 win seasons to be satisfied with mediocrity. I want a championship!
Comment from ricklevinenyc

Oh, and, what’s with his attitude. Screaming after dunks, taunting and trash talking? As if he’s earned the right and respect to do that…
Comment from Brickjp
Time November 20, 2007 at 5:53 PM
Haha. I hear you about the celebrations. But I can’t argue about the intensity he’s been showing. But yea, Haywood always seems to try to act ‘hard’ after he gets a dunk or something. It cracks me up every time. Hopefully we will see some more of that tonight.
With that said, looking forward to a convincing win. This is a team we should beat handily. Doesn’t mean it will happen, we have a poor history of playing down to our opponent. But this team is playing with huge confidence right now and I see them getting back to .500 tonight.

guys talking about brendan haywood before the season began @ ricklevinenyc.
Imo brendan has been underutilized. Maybe because of the system, maybe because we do alot of perimeter scoring
Comment from BruceO
Time November 20, 2007 at 6:05 PM
to be honest rick I don’t want mediocrity as well. Hopefully Haywood will go on and add more facets to his game and become a force lol. To begin with for this team to go anywhere I think we need to help him develop and use him well. Getting a center who’s effective from other teams via trade is hard to do so we gotta work with what we got and what we draft. IS Brendan effective? stats kinda show that he might have a really good effect on the team. I think we just have to apply him well. A big difference for him this year is he doesnt have to worry about being yanked when he has picked up quick fouls. He has to get the ball enough on offense to concern the opposing center and pose a threat. WE also should feed him when theres a mismatch. Things like last year playoffs shouldn’t have happened. Where brendan would have really slowed Z down but we never used him.
Comment from Tom Mandel
Time November 20, 2007 at 6:08 PM
…maybe because Eddie liked Etan too much, maybe because Brendan pouted and often didn’t play hard…
whatever — now is now, and then is gone. If he keeps playing this way all season, we’ll be a much better team for it.

i was hoping they would sit him because we got a lot of games in a short amount of time and the later ones are more of a challenge than this one should be so good move IMO
on the Haywood thing- every one here has seen his improvement and no one can say he is not playing high level ball at this point and i don’t want to sound like a optimistic but i think his is going to be the x factor to a lot of the wins this year but again there are going to be a lot of people hating on him because he did wine and cry to much but i am with tom that was the past and he is throwing down now so live for the moment

For too long Haywood would kinda float around when it was time to rebound. He’s obviously got confidence now. As far as I’m concerned he can scream and trash talk all he wants. I love it. I hope he overflows with testosterone and adrenilin.
This Arenas thing is beginning to worry me.

rick I don’t think he was given good passing angles on that play. He stopped pre maturely IMO though

I just want nick young to get a dunk in during this game. I also somehow hope he scores three more times to give him the 17 pts he had the other day

I’m glad our rookies got to play a lot and the game through first three quarters was an absolute joy to watch. I am a little sad that the final quarter lineup didn’t perhaps too much effort into defense, but I can live with it if it is in a 30+ lead game.

W O W — Gilbert doesn’t play; Caron doesn’t do much; Brendan goes down early in the game ——– and we totally blow them out of the building!
Great game from everybody.

I have NEVER seen us shoot like that. And I’ve been watching since I lived in B’more and they were there. It was contagious.
Haywood didn’t look energetic tonight.
Young shoots with such confidence. McGuire plays with confidence too. Mason is quick, to go along with his shooting if we ever see it. But he’s tentative and passive; lacks confidence.
Blatche just gets better and better. He’s our best big man on the offensive end.
Songaila really hustles on D. He’s not very smooth, but it doesn’t look to me like he gives up much.
I think AD is our best PG.
We should win the next 3 and be 8-5 when we go to Dallas. When we were 0-5 whoda thunk it.

Some random thoughts on the passing basketball scene….
Thank you God for NBA Leage Pass (I watch the Wiz games from NJ)
Blatche was the best player on the floor tonight. There are times when the game looks so easy for him.
The best part of tonight was seeing Stephenson have a good shooting night when Arenas isn’t playing along side him. Let’s hope he can continue. You can tell that he was finally enjoying playing on the offensive end of the court. Good for him!
Nick Young can really play. He is starting to get the feel for playing defense - not as much reaching and better passing lane play.
The Sixers miss Korver. Igoudala and Miller had no game tonight.
When are they going to retire Cheneir’s number? Monroe gets his number retired and most people think of him as a Knick. That’s messed up. He only played about 3 years with the Bullets. Jeff Malone should also get his number retired. He had a great career as a Bullet.
Does anyone know that that “BA” stat means in the box score?

AD is a total beast when he starts……then again Gilbert can 2, i dunno i still prefer gil starting over AD, well then again AD did average a double-double in the playoffs last year as a starter……all i know is right now we have a solid team and will continue to get better……..last and only championship for this ball club was in 1977-1978 season………any1 smelling a 30 year reunion of that trophy coming to DC this year?? from the looks of how good we are right now i know I am!!!

chenier fan does ba mean block shots attempted?? i dunno ive wondered that myself…

I think BA refers to shots you’ve had blocked. If you correspond them e.g. our game against sixers you can see they had 7 BA total while we blocked 7 shots. It tells you who’s shot was blocked

Great game. I’m wondering what Brendan’s injury is. Maybe a muscle pull from the looks of it. Tonight was really a joy to watch. The guys were feeding off each other. It seemed like every shot dropped.
I think you guys are right about the BA stat. Probably means Blocks Against. I still dont know what the +/- category is on nba.com
I hope our guys have got this same type of game tomorrow night. We are definitely clicking.

Has anyone noticed that in the last two games when Mr. Daniels started the team has had over 20 assists each time? I don’t think this is a coincidence. Out of everyone that played, and that was everybody not on ir, only Mr. Haywood didn’t have at least one assist. Everyone else had at least one. I don’t know this for sure but I think the +/- is assists to turn overs.
Brickjp… they said Haywood had a mild ankle sprain and is day to day.

i think the +/- stat is the points difference when you’re in the game vs when yuo’re not in the game. So we were plus on our starters and minus on the bench because our lead went down while they were in the game

We will definitely have our hands full again because Philee is feeling real good about there come from behind victory over Portland . The character of this Philee team was impressive but we Wizards have to handle our business at our home court! First we can let there starters have any thing to celebrate by stepping up the defense on 1.Iguodla
2.A.Miller 3.Willie Green 4.Samuel Dalembert 5. Reggie Evans. Secondly we must use the hot zone on there very very very explosive bench of Louis All-Star Williams,Rodney Carney and Thaddeas Young. If Louis Young gets off by attacking the lane then it will not come as a surprise because I expect him to run pass his slow defender but the Haywood monster will meet him above the rim for the rejection! This could be a very interesting game if we donot put them away early and late! I expect a massive run from Philadelphia at the end of the game but we must expect that!!!! Good Luck
