Wizards Waive Taylor and Massenburg

Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has waived guard Donell Taylor and center Tony Massenburg.

Taylor appeared in five preseason games and averaged 5.8 points and 1.3 steals in 13.8 minutes per game. He played in 98 career games (two starts) over two seasons with the Wizards and averaged 2.7 points, 1.1 rebounds and 0.9 assists in 8.5 minutes per game as a professional. Taylor originally signed with the Wizards on August 16, 2005 as an undrafted free agent out of UAB.

Massenburg appeared in four games and averaged 2.0 points and 1.8 rebounds in 8.3 minutes per game. Massenburg, a 13-year veteran, originally signed with the Wizards on October 1.

The Wizards roster now stands at 14.

I like taylors charector and speed but he wasnt NBA ready. All that getting the ball to the other players late in the shot clock business sucked and we didnt need it especially with A.D. needing more minutes. So he wasnt a good pass first point guard. He also wasnt a good shoot first pg considering he didnt make a good percentage of his shots or consider whether there were better options available first. Addition by subtraction. Gives us space to make more possible acquisitions.

You need to update Andray’s position on the Wizards roster on http://www.washingtonwizards.com. Andray is listed as a forward and he is playing some forward but is primarily the backup center, so he should be listed as C-F like Pecherov is.

I think Mr. Taylors days were done when Mr. Mason proved he could be the third pg option.

I was thinking they would waive Taylor because of how he looked in the preseason. Taylor and Blatche came into the NBA at the same time and we all can see how much more control Blatche plays with comparing him to Taylor.

Without Etan I thought they would keep Massenburg, but I guess they are going to give those minutes to Pecherov

I am not surprised at the waivers for Taylor and Massenburg.
Taylor had plenty of opportunities to improve over the last few years.
Masenburg best days are behind him. A great journeyman career.
I would not rule out EG picking up another big man before the season starts.
Especially if the WIZ apply for a roster exemption if ET is truly is going to be out for the season.
With ET on the injury list for the season it might be a wise move to go after P.J. Brown
P.J. would give us good experience and be a valuable influence for our big guys.
Andray has shown some flashes of a Stoudamire/KG clone this pre-season, but the proof is in the puddin once the season starts. So who else thinks P.J. could help us?

I agree, grifonracing, it was Mason’s play that undid Taylor.

Isn’t PJ Brown a PF?

PJ Brown only will play for a title contender.

With this move, given that ET is out, we will only have 13 available players. I bet Ernie has his eye on the waiver wire; maybe there’s someone out there he wants a chance to bring in.

I don’t think, however, that it is likely to be another big man. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think we need help at the 2 off the bench. Or… a ‘best player available’ bargain??

I enjoyed watching Taylor play the last couple of years. He looked like a guy who realized how lucky he was to be in the NBA. But the problem is that he is not a dead-eye shooter, does not finish well in traffic, and doesn’t handle the ball well against pressure. If he doesn’t catch on with another NBA team, he can always look back with pride that he made it to the NBA and lasted for a couple of years – and that isn’t bad at all.
