NAVARRO DEAL DONE
Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has acquired a future first round draft pick from the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for the rights to Juan Carlos Navarro.
“We’re pleased to acquire a first round pick, which gives us an additional asset,” said Grunfeld. “Our backcourt, led by Gilbert Arenas, DeShawn Stevenson, Antonio Daniels and our recent draft pick Nick Young, is deep and versatile. By trading the rights to Juan Carlos Navarro – a former second round pick of the Wizards – we have greater flexibility to build our team.”
Navarro was originally drafted by the Wizards with the 40th overall pick in the second round of the 2002 NBA Draft.

I guess it takes a long time for a 1st round draft pick to travel from Memphis to Spain and then to D.C.
Good job Ernie!
August 16th, 2007 at 3:56 PM
first… syke nah… this is good for the wizards hopefully memphis sucks so we get a really good center with our draft pick next year…
August 16th, 2007 at 4:03 PM
I wonder what the protections for the pick are…
We probably won’t get the pick anytime soon if Memphis isn’t good.
August 16th, 2007 at 4:15 PM
No real information? Perhaps this is still to be worked out (but what makes the deal so complicated, I wonder)?
August 16th, 2007 at 4:22 PM
Note that the Wizards have signed Donell Taylor to a non-guaranteed contract. Ivan’s analysis on Wizards insider is to the point: Donell has the athleticism, but right now he doesn’t have a shot so he can’t be a 2 and he doesn’t really play point very effectively.
I will *never understand* why Ernie didn’t sign Aaron Miles.
August 16th, 2007 at 4:32 PM
We should have real information within a few hours according to Wizards Insider.
August 16th, 2007 at 4:39 PM
We still can’t really feel what this deal will bring us… I really wanna know the conditions of the deal!
August 16th, 2007 at 5:24 PM
bottom line is, we got navarro with a second round pick and we got a first round pick for navarro. given what ernie can do with picks (plus the fact that navarro is now old — we drafted him 5 years ago — and the wiz have a crowded backcourt) i think this is a very solid move.
now just get over that silly arrest nonsense (i mean who hasn’t been driving around a drunk friend that wants to pickup a streetwalker) and sign blatche!
August 16th, 2007 at 6:01 PM
I’m from Spain, I’ve been watching Navarro ssince he started to play, he is a great scorer and he may reach the level of Drazen Petrovic or Pedja Stojakovic… I think Wizars should have got Navarro instead of DeShawn Stevenson. Time will tell.
August 16th, 2007 at 6:34 PM
did anyone hear about jarvis hayes playing in DETROIT? ha…. good riddance….
August 16th, 2007 at 7:28 PM
I just checked that Jarvis thing, and yes it’s true lol. Well we all knew he wouldn’t be there anymore and honestly I ain’t the one who’s gonna complain about that decision. The guy might come back and kill us, cuz some nights he can shoot, but I’m tired of seeing the man getting the ball and directly shooting it…. Last year he played 17 games, shot 41% and 36% from downtown.
August 16th, 2007 at 7:34 PM
yeah i just want to hear what the protection is on the pick i hope EG played hard ball and got a top 3 only (yea its a long shot but i can hope)
August 16th, 2007 at 7:52 PM
i will jarvis well. i think he might blow up in detroit, being that he is in a new environment, but i think the wiz has a pretty deep team….. my only concern is detroit has revamped a few careers for players. there have been several players that the wiz have lost and they turned out to be good.
August 16th, 2007 at 7:55 PM
i think it’s a strong possibility he might come back strong. if we look at it he’s only had 2 full seasons in the nba due to his injuries. i don’t know i am looking forward to the discussions when we play detroit. a team like detroit isnt going to sign jarvis and have no plans for him. i wish the kid well
August 16th, 2007 at 8:14 PM
Ben Wallace, Rip Hamilton, Rasheed Wallace, now…. Jarvis Hayes
Watch him turn into an allstar in Detroit. lol
August 16th, 2007 at 8:16 PM
The Wizards receive a top-19 protected first round pick in 2008, a top-16 protected pick in 2009, a top-14 (lottery) protected pick from 2010-2012, a top-12 protected pick in 2013 or a second-round pick and cash considerations if they have not received a pick by 2013.
August 16th, 2007 at 9:31 PM
Jarvis Hayes a Piston? WOW. I never saw that coming. I wish him luck. They have a very talented roster and pretty deep bench. I wonder where he fits in the rotation…
August 16th, 2007 at 9:46 PM
we can use the 1st round pick from memphis and Etan Thomas to get better center?
August 16th, 2007 at 10:19 PM
TM - Aaron Miles is heading to Spain. Guess he wanted the guaranteed money.
http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2007/aug/08/miles_headed_spain/?sports
August 17th, 2007 at 1:43 AM
ahh wizdom……….. ben wallace plays for the bulls! but after all the sarcasm the pistons just got another weapon which means they are deeper! just what we need more competition! and i believe it is nacho libre! ne way navarro over deshawn? yea……… thats just what we needed more offense and less defense. firstly JCN is an undersized 2 gaurd, and he has no D! he has yet to prove anything n the NBA, and oh yea if he has a good season, cheers 2 him but he does play in memphis! he can take all the shots he wants. maybe that was the best move for him, he comes in as a go to guy, here he would be a bench warmer here!
August 17th, 2007 at 3:41 AM
I hate how much protection the pick has If its what wizdom said, we totally got hosed, who cares if he’s a second round pick. bottom line is this guy is a good player and they wanted him. And all we are getting is some super protected pick (this is if wizdoms prediction is true) all the way to 2012! forget that. I hope its not as protected as they say. I’d be really surprised if thats all that ernie values JCN to be. Either they don’t think he has much value or salary cap is really scary to the team..
On another note i see they signed jarvis, we’ll see how he does now that he has an injury free season behind him. I expect him to improve defensively and offensively. It’ll be fun to see him match up against caron, dominic, nick young and deshawn. I heard they may have signed donnell too. Donnell, roger mason and mike hall might be expected at training camp, I wonder what the financial ramifications are or are they intending on really low balling andray in order to get all these people in.
August 17th, 2007 at 4:12 AM
Was too much protection on that pick for me…
August 17th, 2007 at 5:16 AM
good for JC Navarro … bad for Wizards …. I am afraid you are gona regret of that decision… (Navarro: 16 PPG, .40 3p% in his first season…auctions?)
August 17th, 2007 at 6:01 AM
Sorry little correction: waY too much protection
August 17th, 2007 at 7:04 AM
Yes this pick had too much protection, but it seems that navaro was never in the plans of the wiz since maybe they thought that he was not a good fit for the team. even if they did not sign deshawn, they probably would have signed devin brown over him. So you are trading someone that is not in the plans for the future (similar to kwame trade) for something valuable to either draft a talented player or trade it away. The later is what i think eg will do with it. ALways trust ernie.
August 17th, 2007 at 7:24 AM
oh boy there goes detroit taking another wizard. he’s probly gonna become an all star
August 17th, 2007 at 7:59 AM
I don’t like it. I’m not sure why we didn’t ask for Swift and a Second instead of this first round pick. That would be better for us.
There’s a decent chance that we won’t even get the first rounder… although they’ll probably be a playoff team before 2013.
August 17th, 2007 at 8:58 AM
Yes, from the conditions it looks like we got next to nothing for the rights to Navarro. It might work out differently, but chance is in play here and all we can do is wait.
Eric — we’re all way ahead of you on Aaron Miles; we knew he signed in Europe, we’ve been talking about it while you were away. You can’t go away man, you just can’t — and now you’re moving out of the picture altogether. Sheeeesh!
I would have signed Devin Brown over Stevenson; he is a better player by the numbers (remember games are decided *by numbers*) and would have been cheaper. I would also have signed Navarro, given the potential uncertainty of Gilbert’s future as a Wizard. Probably this was a $$ thing, but on the other hand Ernie knows more than I do.
August 17th, 2007 at 9:27 AM
TM - my bad.
My guess is that Miles wanted a guaranteed deal, which because of the Wizards roster situation is not something he was likely to receive.
But you guys probably already know that.
August 17th, 2007 at 10:21 AM
i can promise u all (wizards fans) that u’ll regret the decision of trading jc navarro. i watch his games for more then 10 years - the guy is crazy, for sure he’ll learn americans how to play ball…
August 17th, 2007 at 11:43 AM
i think we should have just gotten a 2nd Rounder and some cash straight up…..well all know what EG can do with 2nd Rounders!!!
August 17th, 2007 at 1:09 PM
s it me or was Wes Unseld involved in this trade? Check out the details:
i
According to a league source, the draft pick received by the Wizards will be top 19 protected in 2008, meaning the Grizzlies would keep the pick if they finish with one of the top 19 picks. The pick is top 16 protected in 2009, top 14 protected from 2010 to 2012 and top 12 protected in 2013. If the Wizards have not received the pick by 2013, they will receive a second-round pick and cash considerations.
All the Griz have to do is keep saying “nope you can’t have our pick…” then someday in 2014… the Wiz will get a 2nd round pick and a little money!
Man do I miss 1978!
August 17th, 2007 at 1:50 PM
well we know we are getting a illegitimate 1st rounder because its well protected
August 17th, 2007 at 2:17 PM
are first rounders really that important to give up one of the best european players? And the first rounder we get will likely suck. I remember people hoping it was only top three protected. NOw its far worse
August 17th, 2007 at 11:56 PM
Who says the addition of Mr. Navarro is going to transform the Grizzlies into a championship contender? They didn’t do all that well this past season. If they do poorly again next season it could mean something to us. #20 is better than the 2nd round unless you are Eg and find guys like Mr. McGuire.

look at this video and those amazing shots (”bombas”) … and you see what we lost…

would you want to know what is a “bomb”?

I love this game!
August 18th, 2007 at 10:21 PM
In some ways, high second rounders are more valuable than low first rounders, because you don’t have to guarantee them. I would have tried to get 2 of them for Navarro.
You have to realize, however, that there is *a lot* involved in these deals that we don’t know anything about.
August 19th, 2007 at 12:00 AM
I agree, Tom. All I really meant by my post was that we could be using the draft pick a lot sooner than 2012.
August 20th, 2007 at 7:59 AM
Yes, certainly - but I am hoping it will be part of a trade.
