WIZARDS SIGN DRAFT PICK DOMINIC MCGUIRE
Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has signed forward Dominic McGuire. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. McGuire, 6-8, was drafted 47th overall in the second round of the 2007 NBA Draft, out of Fresno State.
“We were very pleased with what we saw from Dominic during Summer League,” said Grunfeld. “He is extremely athletic, very competitive and is a good rebounder. Dominic is a solid overall defensive player who plays with great energy.”
“I am very excited and feel very fortunate to be joining the Wizards organization,” said McGuire. “I am looking forward to doing my best to help this team accomplish their goals of getting further in the playoffs and winning a championship.”
In five games played with the Wizards during the 2007 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, McGuire averaged 12.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 30.2 minutes per game. Last season, in his final collegiate campaign, he averaged 13.5 points, 9.8 rebounds and 3.6 blocks per game (fifth in the nation). McGuire, 21, was an early entry candidate in the 2007 NBA Draft.

Yes…I was getting a little worried….I believe that it will either be AD or D-Mac as our Sixth Man off the bench

my blog name came about because of the addition of dominic mcguire to the WIZ.
I see him as a very versatile player off the bench. I believe this young man will be able to back up caron and in certain defensive situations will be able to play the off guard.
Don’t be surprised if he makes the the NBA all rookie team (first or second team). I believe the WIZ got the steal of the draft.

sounds like a good addition. is there any vid of this kid playing?
August 13th, 2007 at 5:35 PM
yes, check out youtube for some of his minutes. I watched him in *all* the summer league games. Not the real nba, obviously, but he has a knack for knowing where to be on the court, and he is very athletic. His shot is solid w/ good form, and he has a high basketball IQ.
I think he’s likely to contribute more than Nick in his rookie year, and yes I think he has a shot to make the all-rookie team.

yes accordingly to how D-Mac and Nick Young played in the summer league i beleive D-Mac will see more minutes than Nick….Nick couldnt buy a shot and he got to flashy at times…i mean why would he get so flashy if everyone there is fighting for there NBA career

o and yes i think he was a shot at all-rookie team….and i wouldnt be surprised if he is in the top 5-10 for roy

yeah i like the fact that we got this guy in a contract because i am with the rest of you he will make a mark in the nba and with caron and him as a back up we locked that spot down now we need a center but i dont see us geting one i hope BH gets a wake up call and brings his game because we all know he can play grate but he just seems to not want to

this kid is a true steal and grunfeld does his magic well.

great addition to the team. we don’t need blatche. spend some money on helpful additions! can someone tell me for sure whether pecherov is playing center or power foward?
August 14th, 2007 at 12:21 AM
definately power forward for pecherov. we dont really NEED blatche, but I’d like to hold on to him for added depth and potential is there. d mac is a great pickup.

It’s about time. I was worried there for a minute. I’m glad they signed him. He was just awesome in the Summer League. His play helped us to finally win in the league. He was very athletic. Seemed to read the floor very well and created some great plays. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was in the running for the ROY…

Any news on Blatche? I thought they were going to sign him before DMac..
August 14th, 2007 at 7:17 AM
I’m sure that it wont be hard to sign blatche. With his troubles, i dont think any team would give him much more than 2 mil a year if that. The wizards can probably get him for around 1 mil/year which i think is worth it for a guy this talented but with baggage even though we might not need him that much. Blatche is a reason why I love the age limit in the nba.

This kid is nice. He will make a very good addition to the team. He had played very well in the pre-season. Hope he does the same throughout the year.

Blatche either takes whatever his agent can negotiate (before his client does something even stupider!), or else he takes a qualifying offer for one year and then becomes a free agent.
If I were Andray Blatche, and I thought I could straighten myself out, I’d play hardball and be willing to sign for a year in order to become unrestricted. That’s probably what’s happening.
If I were Ernie, and I had seen 20 years of players almost all of whom remained the same person and player they were the year they first entered the league, I’d hold firm. That too is probably what’s happening.
If I were Andray Blatche’s *agent* and knew how unlikely it was that my client really change, I’d get the best I could out of this deal w/ the hope of securing my client’s financial future before he figures out how to piss it away.

I agree about the age limit, stevevu; this kid would have been better off — even financially — putting in two years of college ball.
August 14th, 2007 at 10:52 AM
Blatche, I mean — of course, we should really be talking about Mcguire in this comment thread. He is going to be a *nice* player I think.
August 14th, 2007 at 2:12 PM
so if pecherov will be playing the power foward why do we keep songaila? package him and etan! we need a center and a point! AD is the oldest player on the roster he will be finished soon and oh yea gil’s contract is up this summer contact the rockets or the magic…….. their filled with point gaurds! sign mutumbo or foyle
August 14th, 2007 at 2:25 PM
how about free agents pj brown, varejo, melvin ely, danny fortson, charlie bell, sweetney, mutumbo, foyle!
August 14th, 2007 at 5:48 PM
no money brian for those free agents. I agree with you. We might not need songaila if blatche and pech are developing. He’d be worth packaging with etan for a big man. But I think we should be talking about dominic here. He’s going to be good. I’ve been following him since draft express highlighted him as the darkhorse for small forward in the draft. We should also take a look at his brother. His brothers got KG’s body and trains well with dominic.
IN reference to Dominic I’ve heard somany comparisons..a young kenyon martin from eddie jordan (who did coach Kmart), I’ve heard shawn marion, gerald wallace from fans, I’ve also heard scottie pippen from coaching staff. either way its elite company, I’m glad we got a good back up who’s not undersized for caron, someone with good intangibles. Hopefully the new defensive coach will make young gunners all fundamentally sound.
I hope the young skywalker does well too. I’m most interested in how he develops, he reminds me offensively of a young kobe. His shots were not falling as much and he wasnt super aggresive but I think thats purely conditioning and strength. In terms of technique it was super fluid and he created his shot really easily. Alot of people say he cant rebound or defend but I noticed even when he guarded stuckey stuckey never tried to attack him cause nicks too long. And as for rebounding this dude was pulling rebounds over brandan wright while playing out of position. grunfeld can recognize gaurd talent. He thought micheal redd will be very good, he stole arenas and has an eye for talent. I remember him saying it was an easy choice. For who was left on the board nick young was really talented. That mid range game will really help us.

I’m glad the Wizards signed D-Mac. With the veterans we have, the rookies should get a lot of schooling in the game of basketball. I won’t be surprised if there is another changing of the centers happens midway though the season.
