SIGH: A PENNY FOR YOUR MEMORIES…
In a post completely unrelated to anything going on in Washington, I saw news this morning that Southeast rivals Miami Heat signed veteran ({cough}really old{cough}) guard Penny Hardaway yesterday. While his signing is apparently non-guaranteed according to the Sun-Sentinel, the thought of Penny and Shaq together brought back a ton of memories of a player who for several years was without a doubt one of the most talented perimeter players in the Eastern Conference during the mid 90’s. Then you-know-who came back and pretty much destroyed the Magic in 96.
The Post’s Michael Lee, a guy who grew up watching mid-90’s basketball like your’s truly, gives his take on the signing and also takes a trip down memory lane about the four time all star.
Last summer, Dwyane Wade’s rise to NBA super-duper stardom reminded me of Penny and what coulda/shoulda been. If you were following NBA ball in the earl-mid 90’s, you know not only how talented Hardaway was but how adored he was by fans everywhere. There are tons of people who are in their early 20’s now that will say that Hardaway was their favorite player when they were kids. We can only wonder at what could’ve been. I mean, this guy was unbelievable - a 6-7 point guard who could run an offense but also score at will. Oh well, take a look at this youtube’d clip and reminisce about the man simply known as Penny.

remember little penny! and man was he ever a cool guy kinda reminds me of Gil in some ways but i think he is a little too old to be trying to play basketball and now the heat have a average age of 82 and its going to be a MJ all over! but i could be wrong

Good. What does this tell you about the state of their team? Miami gets older and Boston still doesn’t have a point guard. I would love to see Penny have a huge part in Miami.
The Wiz is loaded with young Studs as well as players just about ready to hit their prime, Gil and Caron, and one player in his prime, Antawn.
I’m glad we’re not in a position to pull players from the grave for help.

Penny Hardaway, was one of the greatest players to ever grace the game in the first installment of the post-Jordan Era. He was feared by opposing defenses, and was just an unstoppable force. I hate to see his career go the way it has, because if he had reached his full potential, with out injuries, who know what could have happened.

this thing reminded me of how nick young was saying his game is like penny hardaway, then added a young penny hardaway for full effect

know one thing miami offseason have been a bad one and if they don’t get better soon. they could lose the southeast division.

how about jeff ruland and rick mahorn for bh and et. at least we know the real beef brothers will get along.

i almost forgot i was suppose to make a comment about penny.
if pennyand reggie come back the wiz might as well check with the admiral in san antonio to see if he has anything left in the tank. bring david robinson back he is better in retirement than both et and bh combined.

Penny was a great player for a few years; it’s hard to believe he can contribute any more. As to the Celtics signing Reggie — give me a break!
On the other hand, they aren’t going to need him. Unless injuries bring down their big three, they’ll likely win the East.

Our problem is solved. Don’t we still have Wes Unseld under some sort of contract?

A lot of people go way for the Summer. You know the routine. It will pick within the next couple of weeks.
Having said that I wouldn’t be surprised to see Dennis Rodman try and make a comeback…
