GILBERT ARENAS IS EVERYWHERE

As many of you know, I was in the Philippines on vacation recently. Luckily for this NBA team employee, the Philippines is a basketball-first nation (one of the few) so I was never far removed from NBA-related news. In fact, the country’s major cable network carries an NBATV like station called “BasketballTV“, which carries many NBATV programming (including Vegas summer league!) as well as full games (aired live during the season).

Anyway, the pic below was taken when I was strolling through a local department store in the Metro Manila area. My first thought: “Man…I can’t get away from these guys!”

I’m in Taiwan right now and have seen some Gil stuff… not much..
BUT, last year, there was absolutely no Wizards stuff anywhere.
So far, I’ve seen a guy wearing a gil jersey and some Gil stuff in the shoe stores.

  2. wizskinz00 Says:

I was in China in May/June. I saw Gil Arenas posters everywhere, man I could take some photos for wizards fans.

  3. jmpalomo Says:

TRADE FOR YIN LEE FROM MILWAUKEE AND GILBERT WILL BE “HUGE.”

  4. wiz-skins07 Says:

    jmpalomo,

do u mean trade Yin Lee for Arenas….if this were to happen i would stop watch basketball…even though i love it so much

  5. Wiz034 Says:

That’s what I’m talking about..Agent 0 talent recognized around the world..

  6. Wizzy Says:

Wiz-skin07 i think what jmpalomo mean is that get Yin Lee. then Gil will have more market in the world. I am glad that even tho we dont have any Chinese player, they loved Gil and the Wizards.

  7. tts1 Says:

I’m soooooo proud of Gilbert!! You totally deserve mad PRAISE!!!!!!!!!!Go for yours my brother….you and the boys make it happen 07′-08′. “GO WIZARDS”

  8. WizDom Says:

    umm…. who is Yin Lee?!

  9. LilGil Says:

I’m in Switzerland right now and so have I been for 17 years and I’ve never seen any Gil commercial stuffs so far lol. But two months ago I was in Dublin and I seen some Wizards kicks in a footlocker store just next to the famous knicks, celtics and bulls ones which was pleasant!

  10. middletonss Says:

By the way WizDom, Yin Lee is the long lost son of Bruce Lee. Don’t you know that? lol

  11. philippine baller Says:

Oh Man!!! I cant beleive Gilbert was here in the Phil. without me knowing!!!

  12. eccentric beethoven Says:

have anybody thought that a washington wizard would be a world wide mega star before a washington redskin?

  13. WizDom Says:

seriously though.. who is this Yin Lee that these guys are talking about?
jmpalomo, wiz-skins07 and Wizzy seem to know a player the Bucks have named Yin Lee that I’ve never heard of… :)

  14. middletonss Says:

I do believe they are talking about Yi Jianlian from the Bucks. If the Wizards sign and trade Blacthe to the Bucks in return for Yi Jianlian it might work.

  15. jmpalomo Says:

Yin is the first round draft pick of Milwaukee, 6th overall, who refused to play for Milwaukee because there are no Chinese over there. Bring him to DC. We got our own Chinatown for him.

  16. eccentric beethoven Says:

umm……. that really not a bad idea for yin to come to washington but he might want to play in seattle or new york or l.a. because of a larger asian community. but those teams have the center position fill. i just don’t know if the asian community is large enough in the washington area for him to feel comfortable.

  17. WizDom Says:

3 different posters here to referred to him as “Yin Lee” :)
and again ^ jmpalomo just called him “Yin”

Yi Jian lian is a totally different name than Yin Lee.

  18. WizDom Says:

eccentric beethoven called him Yin too.. who’s this Yin guy :)

  19. WizDom Says:

    jmpalomo, wiz-skins07, Wizzy, eccentric beethoven…
Its funny all of you refer to Yi Jianlian as Yin Lee :)

  20. smchawk Says:

Let’s work our Charles Oakley! I know, i know, he wouldn’t fit under our cap, he’s 43, blah blah blah. Still, he’s pretty much exactly the type of player most of us think the Wizards need, or at least the 35 year old version of him is. Tough, rebounds, defends, doesn’t need the ball on offense.

  21. jmpalomo Says:

Why can’t we trade for Jermain O’Neal. He is in the market.
Here is my proposal. Send it up to Ernie immediately!
    Petravich
    Nick Young
    Brendan Haywood
    Antonio Daniels
Wiz #1 next year (not Memphis’s-keep that one)

Two young studs, a #1, a serviceable and cheap Center, and a backup point guard.

  22. whoaitstu Says:

eccentric beethoven .. where are you from ? DC, maryland,VA have a BIG asian population .. are you serious ? we have a bigger asianpopulation than in Seattle .. New York and Hsuoton and LA of course are bigger .. but wow .. i cant believe you just said that .. and middletones .. that sign and trade would not work with Blatche for Jianlian .. wanna know why ? 1.) although Blatche is a 3rd year player, he has not proved himself enough .. 2.) Jianlian was a lottery pick, 6th overall .. if he was in Blatche’s draft, he would have been top 3 in ‘05 .. 3.) he shows more upside than Blatche because his game is more complete as where Blatche has talent but he’s still raw .. and you guys who refer to Yi Jianlian as Yin Lee .. remember in asia, we flip our names backwards .. so Jianlian would be his first name and Yi would be his lastname .. so when you refer to him as Yin Lee, thats a totally different name .. his name is Yi Jianlian .. not Yin Lee

  23. whoaitstu Says:

thast why on Yao Ming’s jersey, it says YAO

  24. aznzero Says:

ERIC you pinoy too?!?! its great to know gilbert is known in the mother country.

  25. WizardsDotCom Says:

    aznzero - yup, pinoy!

  26. WizardsDotCom Says:

philippine baller - he wasn’t there, it’s just a picture of him that I took while I was at SM Makati.

  27. Wizards4Life Says:

yeah thats sweet that he is know over there i bet you could have not found anything with a wizard on it be4 Arenas got to DC

  28. aznzero Says:

haha i miss those huge SM malls!

  29. philippine baller Says:

    Yo im pinoy too

  30. philippine baller Says:

I cant beleive gil was HERE!

  31. WizardsDotCom Says:

philippine baller - he WASN’T THERE. It’s just a picture!!!

  32. WizardsDotCom Says:

W4L - I seem to remember a HUGE influx of “23″ Wizards jerseys a few years back, but those don’t really count, do they. ;)

  33. smchawk Says:

#23 on the Wizards? I must have blocked out those years. The Bullets had a #23 who I remember was a pretty good outside shooter now working as a pretty good analyst.

  34. eccentric beethoven Says:

MY BAD WHOAITSTU YOU ARE RIGHT WHEN IT COME TO THE WASHINGTON D.C. AREA AND NOT JUST WASHINGTON. WASHINGTON D.C. AREA HAVE A LARGER ASIAN POPULATION THAN SEATTLE AREA.

  35. Wiz034 Says:

I just heard we are close to sending Brendan and draft picks to the sonics for Wilcox. Working hard as soon as I find out more I will get back to you guys.

    Posted by: ivan | August 8, 2007 08:21 AM

I don’t know if this is true or not..But I read it on Ivan’s blog. It would be good for us to get Wilcox but do we have to give up Brendan? I like Brendan. I just wish it was Etan..

  36. jmpalomo Says:

Chris Wilcox for Brendan Haywood and Picks.
    BRING IT ON!!!
The best is yet to come from Chris Wilcox.

  37. odawg Says:

    That’s not true. C’mon.

  38. WizardsDotCom Says:

Folks - don’t put too much stock into that Haywood-Wilcox rumor. You can sign in as anybody on the Post blogs.

  39. middletonss Says:

I can’t believe that trade will work. The Sonics wan’t go for that.

  40. Wiz034 Says:

    Yeah,

I just think it’s someone wishful thinking. We would have heard something on that one!!

  41. rob Says:

This guy is HUGE!!!! I am in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City and I see big poster of Arena in a market. Young guys that speak no English are wearing his jersey and talking like they are Gilber.

  42. eccentric beethoven Says:

reggie miller is think of comeback to the nba to play for the celtics? WHAT IS GOING ON FIRST OAKLEY NOW THIS!

  43. Wizards4Life Says:

i am shure the wilcox trade is not true but think about that 5 people that can drop 10+ points on you…

and yeah Wiz.Com i dont think we can call him a wizard he was more of a ticket selling promo. but i was thinking about that i know he had some wizards stuff over there!

  44. Wiz034 Says:

Reggie is over forty…it’s not worth it to play only 15 minutes a game. I can’t see the Celtice winning a ring in the first year..He just needs to let it go and leave his legacy as a Pacers. No ring…

  45. middletonss Says:

ESPN said this morning that the Celtics asked Miller if he wants to comeback. Miller is unsure of want he wants to do at this point. (to keep it short)

I’m with you Wiz034. All this hype on Boston I still don’t think that they will win a ring this year. Now maybe if they got a Floor General (PG) then I will change my mind. No PG, No ring. They may have three good team players but, we will see how much of a team player they are when there numbers start falling.

  46. eccentric beethoven Says:

boston still have a thin bench and with there big 3 that at the age of 30 and up that a lot of wear and tear

  47. Tom Mandel Says:

I don’t know whether the Celtics will take home the ring, but they are *definitely* the team to beat in the East.

  48. BruceO Says:

you heard the heat signed penny hardaway? First reggie, then penny hardaway and then allan houston thinking about comebacks

  49. stevevu Says:

I think the celtics are fine at pg. rondo isnt a good shooter but they dont need him to be a shooter. they need to him to penetrate and kick to the open player or drive and layup both of which he can do pretty well. they need a veteran backup though.

  50. WizardsDotCom Says:

TM - I’m not drinking the Celtics’ kool-aid just yet and in my mind are not “*definitely*” the team to beat. On paper they may be the team to beat, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Chicago or Detroit have a better regular season than they do. Too many questions regarding the all-star trio’s supporting cast. One team they’re being compared to are the 1999 Houston Rockets.

  51. 0ARENAS0 Says:

wooww…gilbert went 2 da phillipines first of all i never went der i im actuallly a filipino…n now i c gilbert my favourite baller went 2 my hometown is crazy 2 hear dat..i dnt even c gils shoes here in canada i got 2 get those shoes….but gilbert i am ur biggest fan…not da way i collect ur stuff n all dat..im a fan dat loves 2 play basketball n i always c u in youtube how u crossover how u shoot da ball n all dat…anyways im glad gilbert arenas went 2 da philippines and i know u had a great time for sur even though i didnt went der yet..lol…biggest fan AGENt0!!!

  52. WizardsDotCom Says:

0ARENAS0 - Gilbert was never in the Philippines. This was just a picture of him in a department store.

  53. Tom Mandel Says:

Eric — The Celtics now have the best player in the NBA. This doesn’t mean they’ll win or even contend for a title, obviously, but it’s significant. They also have two more of the NBA’s elite. That’s a good thing too. Their other two starters — rondo and perkins — are pretty effective per-minute players. They don’t score, but scoring - tho necessary - is overrated in evaluating a player’s positive impact. E.g. I don’t see a lot of teams out-rebounding the Celtics this year.

You are right, their backup cast is pretty thin. But, just like planet earth, in the NBA there are few peaks and many plateaus. If the Celtics pick up some average players, they will be in good shape. What is true, however, is that they’ll have to put up with being well into luxury tax territory to put together their team. And they won’t help themselves by doing things like luring a 42 year old ex-superstar out of retirement.

The proof, as they say, is in the pudding — but for sure the upcoming season just got *a llot* more interesting. And the Wizards’ road will be bumpier.

  54. WizardsDotCom Says:

TM - good points on the Celts. I do agree that they’ve improved ten-fold and will definitely be a team contending to take the East. I just don’t think they’re the automatic lock for the Finals many are making them out to be.

  55. brian Says:

someone said no PG no ring………. well remember no center no ring! well the wiz were not that bad on shot blocking at center, but etan was the only “defensive presence”. we dont need a center to come in and score, the big three puts up 35-40 shots a game alone, deshawn around 5-8 and a center gets maybe 3-4 shots, so we need them on the boards and to block shots. how about dikembe! he turned down boston, and i was in orlando the other week, and saw him going to the movies, why was he there? u know why, the magic needs a big man! and guess what we do to. we can let go of one of our high priced big men and sign mutumbo for a one year deal and draft a center next summer!

  56. brian Says:

boston is obviously trying to win now! this summer they went from a young and rebuilding team, to a veteran/ contender team. they changed their entire look. the wiz already have key pieces to a monster trio, we need a few more moves. we are one or two pieces away from a definite appearance in the NBA finals……… we are neck and neck with the celts! they have a big three and we havea big three, it’s just that theres is better! but our surrounding players are better than theirs by far. they need key pieces, we need one stickler, to not necessarily come in and score in the post, but a post presence to go to when needed so teams cannot just focus on tha the big three. u know just to say we have one and we can use it if we want to. also DEFENSE IN THE PAINT WITH REBOUNDING! what do u think?

  57. 0ARENAS0 Says:

Wizardsdotcom - oh ok, i thought dat was in da philippines was bout 2 say good ting it was in a warehouse but didnt he said…”As many of you know, I was in the Philippines on vacation recently.” ……?

  58. 0ARENAS0 Says:

srry my bad….wat am i sayin a department store not warehouse….lol….
