FOURTH QUARTER WOES CONTINUE IN VEGAS

By Zack Bolno, Wizards PR Director

It has been a common theme during the Wizards’ first two summer league games in Las Vegas: a fourth quarter lead that disappears quicker than a novice gambler’s chips at a high stakes blackjack table.

BOXSCORE
VIDEO: Highlights | Full Game

This time it was the Detroit Pistons who hit the jackpot with a 84-70 win over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday at Cox Pavilion.

Pistons forward Jason Maxiell (21 points) and a pair of rookie 2007 first round draft picks – guards Arron Afflalo (21 points) and Rodney Stuckey (17 points) – combined for 59 of the the Pistons’ 84 points as Detroit improved to 3-0 in summer league play.

In defeat, Washington (0-2), however, did get a glimpse of their basketball future and they liked what they saw. The Wizards’ two 2007 draft selections held their own as guard Nick Young had a team-high 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting and forward Dominic McGuire added 12 points and six rebounds.

But it was not enough as the Wizards lost their eighth consecutive summer league game in Las Vegas – a streak that dates back to the summer of 2005.

The Wizards had a 61-51 lead early in the fourth quarter, but for the second consecutive game Washington quickly lost the lead and eventually the game. Detroit outscored Washington 35-13 in the fourth quarter as Maxiell, who saw significant minutes in last month’s Eastern Conference Finals for the Pistons, posted 13 of his aforementioned 21 points in the final quarter.

“We just made too many mistakes out there today, especially in the fourth quarter,” said McGuire, who is averaging 11 points and 6.5 rebounds in his first two summer league games. “We have worked hard to get a lead, but we have to find a way to close out the games in the fourth quarter. We will get better with experience.”

The Wizards have a scheduled morning practice on Thursday, and then play the Houston Rockets, who have won 12 consecutive summer league games, on Friday, July 13 at 10:00 p.m. EST.

MORE WIZARDS NOTES

  • Washington has been outscored by their opponents, 58-21, in the fourth quarter over the last two games.
  • For the second consecutive game, the Wizards starting lineup featured: Aaron Miles, Young, McGuire, Oleksiy Pecherov and Kyle Visser.
  • Young’s 20-point performance included a pair of one-handed dunks: one on a nifty back door cut and the other on an explosive fast break; a finger-roll layup; and a 360-move to the basket that did not go in, but did, though, result in two foul shots.
  • Young’s parents, Charles and Mae, made the trip from Los Angles and attended the game. McGuire’s fiancé, Jessica Earl, who lives in San Diego, attended the game.
  • Detroit attempted 15 more free throws than Washington. The Pistons were 28-of-33 (84.8%) from the charity stripe while the Wizards were just 12-of-18 (66.7%).
  • Former Wizards guard and University of Maryland standout Laron Profit, who is playing for the Pistons’ summer league team, had six points in just a little over seven minutes of action.
  • Wizards guard Roger Mason watched the game with teammate Calvin Booth.
  • NEXT UP: THE ROCKETS
Washington’s game against Houston can be seen locally on Comcast SportsNet on tape delay on Friday night at 10:30 p.m. EDT.

If McGuire keeps up this kind of play, He’ll be a great follow-up to AJ… Pech was kinda dissapointing…

Too bad they lost… Hope they’ll do better against the Rockets…

i’m glad youngs shot started falling, they sat him and Dmac at the fourth and detroit started rallying. First stuckey against the 5 foot 9 guy which is a mismatch then Maxiell started that biz. Our big men are not that strong, mostly skilled guys. Glad visser is playing some, him and mike hall could come in as freeagents but im not sure how much room we have to sign more people I definately see potential in him playing with us.
Ny’s started showing flashes of his game. he said he’s like penny but I think he’s like a young Kobe, I’m sure thats who he mimics it’s been said before. How much room do we have to sign these guys?
Memphis just got Darko who I kinda wanted, it’s funny they did cause he once said Gasol is soft. So they have Gasol, Darko, Rudy Gay, mike miller, conley which isnt a bad lineup, if they want Navarro they got to give us something

Dmac looks Great! Very efficient game. What did he miss? 2 shots? He had stats in almost every catagory again. NY is starting to settle down, and, starting to find his game. My biggest dissapointment is we still need a BIG. I had high hopes for Mr. Visser, but, so far he is letting me down. I hope Mr. Hall keeps showing off! I’d like to see him stay with the team this year, but, I don’t know if there will be room for him.

Good Point Bruce! I wonder what has become of Mr. Navarro? I’d sure like to be a fly on the wall in EG’s office!

I’d take Dmac over mike hall and I think we only need to be two deep at the small forward. He has shown some confidence and is acting like he is the vet. He hit some three points but he doesnt seem very athethic. As for Visser he’s kinda doing what I expect he’s a skilled player who did well only in his last year of college but that was enough in some peoples minds, he slowed down hawes who was a lottery pick groomed to start at center. I expected them to lose both sac and detroit game I expect them to be very competitive in the rest of the games and possibly win all. If they don’t who cares as long as this thing shows us how to utilize those guys. I’m with you grifon I keep checking to see what we are doing as far as a BIG but nada no news so far darko has gone to memphis so I dont know what other big men will be available. The east has started stacking up Boston has made moves, orlando, charlotte, Miami trying to get Mo williams. I want a big man whos good, then I’ll rest easy cause without it we havent made any real changes 16 M is tied up with jamison much as I love him this is the time to trade him for a team looking to take 16M off their books

Oh and mike hall is the one I said is unathletic. Out of curiosity I wonder if any players on the wizards squad look at their own website sections as much as we do. I’d keep alot of fans coming here thats for sure, maybe a chat room even so we can plot, scout and talk aimlessly about everything and nothing

Damn it I missed the game, that’s what you get when you decide to party instead of watching tv.. .Anyway I can’t really say anything here since I didn’t see anything, but still I’m happy to hear that the guys shot a lil bit better, I just checked the boxscore and seen Visser has 2 blocks and D-Mc 1 (I’m already a fan!). I hope they’ll keep improving til tomorrow.

wizards4life- summer league is nowhere close to a allstar game. first of all the players arent nearly as skilled, and people are fighting to get onto rosters so they will hustle and do everything they can to make it.
when judging players in these summer games, you cant judge them by how many points they score ( thats why i am not sold that belinelli is a steal in the draft yet cuz a lot of people score 30+ in summer league and ride the bench in pros) but how they score and other things. when you look at mcquire, he has good handling and get to the rim and is a VERY good finisher. he is also a very good rebounder so there is a lot to like about him. NY finally showed his skill set. good handle, midrange shot, and ability to seperate from defenders. He also can drive to the basket and finish with authority especially on the fastbreak. Pech hasnt shown that much partially because the guards and sf have the ball most of the time but his shot has only been decent. But all in all, after seeing them perform, its hard not to like these guys.

I watched the whole game last night. I am not concerned that we lost — Detroit was led by a 3d year player with a lot of experience (Maxiell). They have a number of other older, more experienced players as well: Profit, Fobbs, Russell, etc.

Dominic McGuire had an excellent game. Nick had only a good game, even though he did shoot well. Someone above said he has a good handle. Actually, that looks like what he most needs to work on. His handle is quite loose, and he loses, or almost loses, the ball pretty often. He can definitely move and separate however.

O’Koren said, in talking w/ the announcers, that Pecherov rotates to the ball too much, looking to shoot. They want him concentrating more on defense and rebounding.

Visser looked active but had a lot of trouble containing his man (either Samb or Fobbs or Maxiell). Still, it’s early days.

Aaron Miles looked *extremely* solid and so did Hall. This was the first time I got to see Mike Hall’s skill set, and I was favorably impressed. He is an extremely intelligent player.

Obviously, not all those 5 players can make the roster; but Miles and Hall can definitely play in the league, and Visser hasn’t shown yet that he cannot play in the league.

Very fun watching the summer league — a league of effort and dreams!

I was also very favorably impressed by Aaron Afflalo — he has a very good feel for the game and is solid all around. And Stuckey is the real deal. Strong and smooth.

I saw those stats, they are incriminating for Stevenson. In my jury, the verdicts in and DeBrick is guilty of asking for too much money AGAIN. For icing on the cake, EG should tell him that if he wants the job he will have to beat Brown in a 3 pt contest. Oh and this time he should be the one shooting with one arm. I mean he is the five million dollar man, right?

so what do you guys think sign Devin Brown and let “DeBrick” walk???

    Would Be Line-Up

1st: Arenas, Young/Brown, Butler, Jamison, Haywood
    2nd: Navarro, Young/Brown, D-Mac, Pech/Blatche, Thomas
3rd: Daniels, Taylor, Songaila, Pech/Blatche, Visser

or Navarro could be a starter at the 2 but even if we DONT NEED “DeBrick”

1st: Arenas, Young/Navarro, Butler, Jamison, Haywood
    2nd: AD, Young/Navarro, D-Mac, Blatche/O-Pech, Etan
3rd: Miles, Taylor, Songaila, Bltache/O-Pech, Visser

thats a nice team we can trade Antoinio Daniels + Haywood + 2nd Round Pick for Marcus Camby

1st: Arenas, Young/Navarro, Butler, Jamison, Camby
    2nd: Miles, Young/Navarro, D-Mac, Blatche/O-Pech, Etan
3rd: Mason Jr., Taylor, Songaila, Blatche/O-Pech, Visser

I like to dream too, skins — but in my dream we get LaMarcus Aldridge rather than Camby.

However, it’s unlikely any of these trades go through. The other team has to *want* to trade.

Yeah I saw the game Young, and Pecherov look pretty good. If they can dunk like that in the regular season we will have some real energy of the bench. The Wizards have got to find a spot for Hall and mostly McGuire. I really can’t see why these would not make the roster.

Just took a lil time to watch it on nba.com . I think this game look a lil like the first one except that they shot better. D-mac kept me on his “fans list” with this game! For Young I still hope he plays a lil less flashy cuz during the season he’d better not use his minutes to have 180 dunk atemp. Still he played well and I think he has a huge potential he just has to be a lil more “under control”. Hall played well again and for the rest I’m still on my positions of the first game. I think they’re playing a lil better together and I hope that they’ll stick a 100% together during friday’s game to get a win this time. Lil question why I’m there, who’s the biggest steal of this year’s draft :D ?

middletonss – i wouldn’t worry about the team trying to fit McGuire in. I’m pretty sure he’ll be around (and in my opinion, getting minutes) in November.

LG – too early to say who a steal in the draft is until the season rolls around.

Okay, here is my early critique of the summer league performances:

McGuire: By far the most impressive draft pick. He has a great motor and lets the game come to him. He is an outstanding rebounder and defender, and it a heck of an athlete. His offense game is pretty efficient so far, and I like that!

Young: He is getting better. I think that early on he is trying to hard to make the highlight reel and make a big impression. If he is going to succeed and crack the normal rotation, he needs to take a cue from McGuire. I can tell his is a freak athlete with some big time UPs, and his shot is coming around. I look for him to settle down and calm his game down.

Pecherov: I actually think he is a bit disappointing. He looks too uncomfortable when he grabs offensive boards down low. He brings the ball down to low (waist level) which allows it to be picked by guards. I think that happened three times last night. He is much too satisfied to keep his offensive game outside. I want to see him work inside a bit. At this point, I am not entirely comfortable saying he should be in the regular rotation. He needs to grow A LOT in the next few months. It is a good thing he is a gym rat. I want to see him in there more with Caron.

well i saw the game all the way through the beginning of the 4th quarter when they called a timeout i switched to ESPN NEWS and they were recaping the Wizards game i was way to dissapointed and stopped watching it…Nick Young was his normal self 20 points couple of turnovers…flashy moves…but he has gotta stop it with the fancyness…D-Mac was outstanding but i wish i would saw more blocks out of him…so far Kyle Visser has been a big dissapointment as has almost everyone except Marco Bellinelli and a couple of others with 2 or 3 years NBA experience…oh and by the way is it possible to be softer than Haywood???(Pecherov) i mean come on put on 20 more pounds of muscle on…and you gotta muscle people out your 7 feet…as one of the NBATV guys said can D-Mac be a younger Kenyon Martin i would love for this to turn out this way…what a success story it would be…next few games i feel Nick Young and D-Mac are going to dominate…

Not so impressed with Pech he looks really soft in the post he needs to get ALOT stronger if he wants to play PF.. Visser needs to be dumped he looks worse than anybody dosent look good for him. I just hope Dmac and Hall keep up the good work… Maybee there might be room at the end of the bench for both of em to bad they play the same posisition

We definately need to be 3 deep at the SF position.. Caron’s listed at 6′ 7 but he is really about 6’5 and a half so he is undersized compared to alot of small fowards I think Dmac & Mike Hall would be good young compliments to CB not to mention he did get hurt the last 2 seasons and we were left with Jarvis, and other guys playing out of position. Between the to , there contracts wont be that much so it dosent matter if 1 rides the pine, as long as they are ready to play if someone goes down

cheick samb looks like he could work out as a center, he’s gained alot of weight (was previously listed at 195) and blocked a few shots here and there, We were leading going into the fourth until a mismatch was created by us using the small point gaurd instead of nick young to defend stuckey. Aaflalo got all his points at the foul line from technical fouls and visser fouls. Other than that everyone could be controlled except maxiell. who was a Beast in NBA so no surprise there. When are we getting a center, I won’t stop whining until we get one

Right now, Pecherov looks a step slow. Maybe it’s because he is recovering from an injury, or maybe he was better off 10 lbs lighter? He didn’t play last year in a very competitive league, so that didn’t help. But, he has a lot of ambition and good work habits. And… he is 7 feet tall!

With the signings of Young & Pech weve got a small delima on our hands. It seems like a small competition at the SF spot and we got 2 good canidates in Mike Hall & Dmac…Its a shame that one of these guys isnt gonig to make the team but who do u choose? Mike is second on the team in scoring OFF THE BENCH where has he been ? Dmac seems like the most atheletic guy on the court no matter who they are playing. I hope we find a way to keep them both
