FREE AGENCY PERIOD OPENS

With the draft behind them, the Wizards are now turning their attention to several of their own free agents.

I’m actually posting this from my cell phone so i’m gonna keep this short. But feel free to post your thoughts here. I’m out of town for a few days but will check in wednesday AM.

I was hoping the Wizards could get non-drafted free agent Darryl Watkins(who’s a center) and put him on our team’s summer league roster but Watkins already decided to go and play on Sacramento’s summer league team. it tells at this website:
http://www.wtvh.com/Sports/Default.aspx?type=sn&NStoryID=5426. I hope we can get several players on our summer league roster.

  3. wiz-skins07 Says:

what do you think if the wizards signed Ron Lewis of Ohio State and Ikene Ebekwe from Maryland so that they can play in the summer league

  4. Tom Mandel Says:

Here is the Wizards roster; I’m trying to figure out what the next moves can be:

    1. Point — Gilbert Arenas : Antonio Daniels*

    2. Shooting Guard — DeShawn Stevenson : Nick Young : Donell Taylor

    3. Small Forward — Caron Butler : Dominic McGuire : Mike Hall

    4. Power Forward — Antawn Jamison : Andray Blatche : Oleksiy Pecherov : Darius Songaila

    5. Center — Brendan Haywood* : Etan Thomas : Calvin Booth

    Gone.
Jarvis Hayes* : Roger Mason Jr. : Michael Ruffin

    * Potential trade bait

(Hayes is ‘trade bait’ in the sense that a ’sign ‘n trade’ could happen.)

There’s a little unbalance in this lineup, and if we keep ruffin and dump hall all the more so. If we were to trade Antonio, we’d have to get a point guard somewhere. If we trade Haywood, we lose a lot unless we take back a 5, and I don’t see any to take back. It’ll be interesting to see whether the Wizards sign an undrafted 5 for the summer league. I could have put Songaila in as a 5, but really he isn’t one.

Looks like there almost *has to be* a trade on the horizon, don’t you think?

  5. Tom Mandel Says:

It’s interesting to see that if we let Jarvis go, it actually creates *a big hole* — we are depending on a rookie 2d rounder to back up the 3. You can pencil in Antawn as a part-time 3, but how many minutes do you want the guy to play? I was thinking we might be able to lower his minutes a bit.

You want Songaila to play 20 minutes, and you want Andray and Pech to play 30 minutes (at least) between them. They are all back ups at the 4! I guess they’ll have to pick up some minutes at Center, or Antawn will have to pick up minutes at 3.

I’m sure it will all work out, but it looks weird right now.

  6. WizDom Says:

Blatche will log minutes at the 3.. and Pech can at the 5.

  7. Wizzy Says:

I dont know what You all think of this line up…

    G.Arenas , A.Daniels ,…
    C.Butlar , N.Young ,…
    A.Jamison , D.McGuire ,…
    Pech , D.Songaila ,…
    A.Blatche , Etan ,…

If we sign DeShawn, it will be the same line up as TOM, except A.Blatche on the Center.

    G.Arenas ,…
    D.Stevenson ,…
    C.Butlar ,…
    A.Jamison ,…
    A.Blatche ,…

  8. Wizards4Life Says:

AB would never be the 5 unless he gains about 190 lbs. he would get worked over good down low

  9. middletonss Says:

    I hope AD dosen’t leave.

  10. neal Says:

In principle, I agree, wizards4life. But I shudder to think that Booth will end up as our backup center. He just doesn’t rebound well enough. I’d rather see Blatche or Pecherov give it a whirl.

I’d rather see Blatche as the backup 3 than Jamison. Antawn has a hard enough time staying with the opposing 4’s.

Here’s the way I see it, which is similar to Tom’s line-up:
    Point: Arenas, Daniels, Taylor
    Shooting Guard: Stevenson, Young, Hayes/Mason/FA
    Sm. Forward: Butler, Blatche, McGuire
    Power Forward: Jamison, Songaila, Pecherov
    Center: Thomas, Haywood, Booth

However, if EG can trade Haywood for a proven SF, then Blatche becomes a PF and Pecherov becomes a center.

  11. Wizards4Life Says:

yeah i think pech is going to try that center spot i think thats why they broght him over but i am not sure sure thats the reason but i could care less if they dump haywood he is a good player when he wants to be but he need to man up and do his job! i cant see why a pro player would piss around and moan and the rest of us are working for 6$ an hour 40 hours a week to make ends meet then pay for tickets to see some guy cry and throw a fit like a 2 year old. and if it were me i would teach him a lesson and keep him then put him on I.R.L. for the whole year. then let him go

  12. Wizards4Life Says:

    Hes blog-ed agian F.Y.I.

  13. Nara Says:

Barring injuries, Gilbert and Caron will log almost 40 mins a game. Doesn’t leave much need or room for back up PG or SF. Especially with the flexibility that comes with having Blatche, Pecherov, and Antwan for the frontcourt, I don’t see SF being a huge issue just because we don’t have a full time SF to back up Caron. Also, I don’t think people should put too much stock on how much McGuire is going to play. 2nd round players usually don’t play much if at all on a playoff team. Ernie just needs to solve the center issue. We’re good after that thanks to the combo players we have on the team from 1-4.
Personally, I wish there was a way to rob a team like charlotte or orlando and steal their center away but from what I’m seeing that’s available, there’s a good chance we’ll enter camp with the same center line up. I just don’t see any team giving up their starting centers if they’re half decent. Others centers available cost an arm and a leg even through a trade. I just don’t see us getting anyone decent. More Etan vs Haywood and Haywood vs Eddie coming up for 07-08!

  14. LilGil Says:

Well for me Blatche can definitly not be a 5… Just as you said Wizards4life, he’d have to gain a whole lot of weight. Pech might certainly try this spot during the Vegas summer league and we’ll see if he’s a possible back up center, but I still think the Wiz should try to get a big, good, strong man.
Gil updated his blog by the way.

  15. Tom Mandel Says:

    Welcome back, neal!
Of course, we can pencil in minutes for Andray at the 3, or Caron at 2 — but then we’re moving people as if they were chess pieces. Caron doesn’t have a good enough handle to be a 2, and so far Andray has only shown promise hustling around the bucket. Pecherov will be fun to watch; obviously, he *wants* to be a player like Nowitzki, and here’s hoping he can be somewhat in that mold!

  16. Tom Mandel Says:

Why! are my comments sometimes not picked up? We’ve signed Aaron Miles, point guard out of Kansas a couple of years ago, to our summer league team.

  17. Tom Mandel Says:

    http://www.draftexpress.com/viewarticle.php?a=2159

  18. FLOYDBT Says:

    Line Up!!!!!!
    PG- gilber,AD,donell
    SG- Deshawn,nick young,jarvis if resigned
    SF- Caron,blatch,mcguire
    PF- Antawn,darius,Pecherov
    C- Brendan,etan,pecherov
Well the center position is by far the weakest and i think that if the wizards end up losing brendan in a trade that doesn’t have another center coming back to washington will just kill any chances of this team probably even making it to the playoffs……so i say keep brendan until we sign a decent center through free agency maybe chris mihm then look to trade his huge contract else where…….

  19. crazy_about_wizards Says:

Hey….Gil has a new blog up….He talks about his excitement to have Nick Young play for the Wizards next season…His feelings about Young make me look forward to next season :)

  20. gil4MVP Says:

any news on the lineup for the Summer League next week??? : )

  21. BulletsFanFromBirth78 Says:

I just read on realgm that Navarro got released from his Barcelona contract…….WizDotCom…whats the word, did we just get another player w/o paying anything???

  22. WizDom Says:

Thats big news and unexpected about Navarro.
It probably means that DeShawn is gone.

  23. wiz-skins07 Says:

are you serious navarro got released???

no bye bye deshawn he’s a SG navorro is a PG bye bye mason and donell

  24. wiz-skins07 Says:

    big news is confirmed…………..YES!!!!!!!!!

here’s the site its in the last paragragh

    http://blog.washingtonpost.com/wizardsinsider/2007/07/new_coach_added.html

  25. Nara Says:

Confirmed on ESPN as well and Barcelona website that navarro has been released to come to the nba!

  26. wiz-skins07 Says:

And if I am not mistaken doesn’t Navarro get the standard two-year contract that a second-round gets since that is when he was picked? This is wonderful!

HOW Do You Say HIBACHI in Spanish???

    team of the future:
    twin towers: blatche and pecherov
    floor leader: caron
backcourt studs: agent zero and jcn-the matador.

  27. wiz-skins07 Says:

now it may be easier to pakage AD with brendan since we got Navarro

  28. Tom Mandel Says:

Interview w/ Juan Carlos Navarro from the Spring: http://www.draftexpress.com/viewarticle.php?a=1961

I have *no* idea what our options are for signing him — can we pay him any amount, or is he covered by some kind of draft scale? He was a 2d round pick.

I don’t know that this means DeShawn is gone, but I can’t see how Taylor or Mason stay if Navarro comes.

  29. wiz-skins07 Says:

this isnt big news but Kyle Visser is playing for the Wiz in the summer league

  30. wiz-skins07 Says:

man this news on Navarro just made my day can the wiz be a 50-55 win team??? I BELIEVE SO

Juan Carlos Navarro: Crossing the Pond?

    July 3, 2007 3:10 PM

A few days ago in the Washington Post, Ivan Carter wrote:

Grunfeld all but ruled out the possibility of Spanish guard Juan Carlos Navarro coming to the team next season. Navarro, who was drafted by the Wizards in 2002, is under contract with Barcelona of the Spanish Pro League and holds a prohibitive buyout option.

Well, if my Spanish is any good at all, this bit of news on the site of his Barcelona team says that Navarro has reached an accord with the squad that will let him pursue an NBA career. (It also says that his first name is “Joan” but I’m going to dismiss that as something that was lost in translation. I’m not sure the NBA is ready for a player named Joan.) Here’s another report, also in Spanish. Apparently, this news has not hit the English speaking world yet.

It has been reported a million times that Navarro is both one of the best guards in Europe, and one of Pau Gasol’s best friends. He’s a guy who can do a lot of things with the ball in his hands, that’s for sure.

UPDATE: TrueHoop reader Pere emails: “Just some background from Catalonia on Joan Carles Navarro, who’s actually from my hometown of Sant Feliu de Llobregat, just 8 miles from Barcelona. His name, Joan Carles, is the Catalan translation of Juan Carlos. In English it would be John Charles.” He also sends a link to another Spanish language article saying Gasol’s Grizzlies could be in the mix, although the source is unclear, at least with my Spanish skills.

    heres the site:

  33. Tom Mandel Says:

    Here’s our summer league roster:
    http://www.nba.com/wizards/news/SL07_roster_070703.html

We signed Kyle Visser for the summer — He is a guy who could make the team!

There has to be some kind of trade talk under way. I wonder if we could/should trade rights to Navarro in a deal w/ the Blazers for LaMarcus Aldridge. He’s a pure center, and they just picked Oden. Portland would *corner the market* on Spanish guards w/ 3 of them: Rodriguez, Fernandez and Navarro!

  34. wiz-skins07 Says:

true we already have AD BUT WE COULD STILL USE NAVARRO but i think that LaMarcus Aldrige would be a good addition and the center we can even trade Brendans ugly contract or even better etans!!! i would be pushing for the wiz to make this trade though id rather trade AD

  35. wiz-skins07 Says:

mistake i WOULDNT be pushing for the wiz to make this trade

  36. wiz-skins07 Says:

dfo you think we can make a deal for jermaine oneal maybe antwan, navarro, and maybe a pick in next years draft for jermaine oneal

  37. Centennial Park Says:

We’ve got to keep Navarro if we have the rights to him. Does anybody know if JCN immediately comes to the Wiz due to the team drafting him?

  38. wiz-skins07 Says:

yea he can come immediately all we have to do is sign him

  39. wiz-skins07 Says:

i wonder if we can secure a roster spot for him to play in the summer league

  40. Centennial Park Says:

We better secure a spot for him. He’s too good not to put him in the summer league so he can get use to the NBA and some of his future teammates.

  41. Wizards4Life Says:

if we just had a low post guy and played D# better we would be holding gold……

  42. wiz-skins07 Says:

i think we should try to get jermaine o’neal or pau gasol, or marcus camby

  43. Wizzy Says:

    here some news about JCN.

    http://www.sbrforum.com/Headlines/NBA/46927.aspx

  44. Nara Says:

wiz skins, I don’t think portland will let Aldridge go. The point of shipping out Randolph was to have two young 7 footers in Oden and Aldridge rather than Randolph and Oden.

  45. wiz123 Says:

man…this is good news. navarro and visser….pecherov…young…..looks like the wizards got a lot of good new additions/options to the wizards….

we’ll just see how it pans out for us…. and what EG would do….can’t wait for the coming season…..

can’t wait to see Gil’s second takeover….ahahah…..i’m so excited…man….this makes me sound gay….LOL….

  46. Tom Mandel Says:

Nara — they didn’t have to ship out randolph to have oden and aldridge; they already had them. They also picked up another center in the randolph trade: Channing Frye. Plus they have Przybilla. And Raef Lafrentz. And Josh McRoberts — another 6′10″ guy.

Now, they don’t have to make a trade — they only have 13 guys under contract, if I counted right, and they are under the cap. So they can sign a couple of free agents or make some trades.

They are *very* young at point guard: 2d year player Jarrett Jack and new draftees Petteri Kaponen and Taurean Green. I am *sure* they are looking for a veteran 1.

They are also light at the wing: Martell Webster, Brandon Roy and Darius Miles. Portland will be doing some dealing and could well be interested in Daniels and even Haywood as a backup center (?).

  47. wiz-skins07 Says:

thats very true Tom Mandel ~ but i think the wiz should really make a move for gasol, considering that he is one of Juan Carlos Navarros best friends….maybe brendan or etan + AD + plus + our two draft picks in next years draft…it would make this team unstoppable!!!

1st Team: Gil, DeShawn, Caron, Antwan, Pau Gasol
2nd Team: JCN, Young, Blatch, Pech, Whoever stays etan or brendan

    Others: McGuire, Booth, Songaila, Visser

  48. wiz-skins07 Says:

Someone in the washington post wizards blog considered….Navarro + Blatche for Yi Jianlian…..i personally think he would be a big bust….hes to soft…plus i dont think milwakkue would accept that trade

  49. wiz-skins07 Says:

play gasol has 5 years left on his contract starting at around 12 mil…this would be a good deal so that he can stick around for long

  50. wiz-skins07 Says:

    the trade would work!!!!!!

  51. Washington Wizards Blog » Blog Archive » REPORTS: NAVARRO A FREE MAN AGENT Says:

[…] free to move the Navarro talk from the Free Agency Thread to this new […]

  52. Nara Says:

i meant portland shipped out randolph to develop oden and aldridge as the twin towers rather than give minutes to randolph. They probably would want AD but I don’t know if for the price of Aldridge. Aldridge after all was a #2 pick. That kind of pick will be someone to retain for a team.

  53. WizardsDotCom Says:

I think Randolph was moved more to continue the cleaning out of the old Blazer regime so to speak. Pritchard has done a great job over there in the last year. They went from becoming one of the laughing stocks in the league to what many think will be a championship contender sooner than later.

  54. Tom Mandel Says:

And he had a little help from the bouncing ball on lottery day!

  55. loveofthegame Says:

I think the whole rooster needs to be look at, you have some great potential that is not really being talked about. Mike Hall is a wonderful addition to the team who knows how to be a team player and a very focused player, well would be if allowed more playing time to show. I think so much time and talk goes into this other players when it’s the little man who helps them look good. Take a look at Mike again, you may see something you like :) MORE PLAYING TIME FOR MIKE HALL, u won’t be sorry!

  56. odawg Says:

Can we keep either Blatche or DeShawn?

I understand that Navarro will not be signed to a rookie contract, but rather he’ll be able to sign a contract up to the full mid-level exception. That means his contract will come out of the mid-level exception unless his rights are traded.

Deshawn was only around for one year, so the Wiz would have to pay him using the mid-level exception… especially because bhe bi-annual exception would be too little.

Blatche was around for two years, so he’s able to sign an Early Bird Contract… but he only made 700k next year and he’s probably going to be offered a contract starting at no less then 3M. That means that the maximum amount he can be offered via the Early Bird Contract isn’t enough to keep him. He’ll have to be signed via the mid level exception also.

Obviously, the mid level exception won’t cover all three of these players. It seems that we’re going to be losing a few important pieces.

  57. winnow07 Says:

Since 1990, only the Bulls with the greatest player of all time have won without a top bigman. Rest of the NBA champions during that period had Ben Wallace, Shaq, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Tim Duncan. We need a big trade this offseason if we want to keep Arenas. Haywood Thomas Ruffin and Booth all STINK

  58. winnow07 Says:

Who are we willing to let go?

My list: Hayes, Taylor, Ruffin, Booth, Haywood, Thomas, Daniels, Stevenson, Songaila and Jamison.

Jamison only because he has one year left on his contract, is not worth 16 million/yr to the Wizards, and if we don’t trade him we will lose him for nothing to free agency.

Keepers: Navarro, Butler, Arenas, Young, Pecherov, Blatche, Roger Mason Jr.

  59. nohoarhay Says:

I ve really been tryin 2 stay out of this but some of the comments i see are down right crazy

  60. nohoarhay Says:

If I were going 2 play GM first I would trade the rights to navarro to memphis along with the haywood contract. there in the west so im sure they can find a way to use a 7 footer. If they want navarro so bad make them pay ,in return im asking for Mike miller and 1 conditional draft pick. they get there guy,we unload are garbage and get a proven 6th man canidate( for doubters miller shot 40.1% from 3 last year).Next I make a run at J.O. why u ask because he can play center and we currently have 6 guys who play PF so KG is out cause he cant play the 5 Who do I give up? Sorry AJ we love u here but u make 2 much and we can easily make up the numbers with the offensive talent.I figure a package of AJ & some other player(s) could get it done preferably thomas or songila.(remember the pick from memphis could do some majic as well) let go of mason, stevenson, hayes& taylor resign blatche, ruffin & booth lineups would be as follows:

    PG:Gil SG:young SF:CB PF:Blatche or Pech C:JO
    PG:AD SG:Mike Miller SF:D Mac PF:Pech or Blatche C:Ruffin or Pech

If Coach Jordan could work out the minutes for a 9 or 10 man basic rotation I think we would be ok & next year set ourselves up for a trade to move up in the lottery and choose maybee Roy Hibbert

  61. odawg Says:

I wonder if Seattle would laugh if we offered them Etan Thomas, the rights to JCN(they can’t use him, but they should be able to trade him for something) and a lottery protected first rounder for Wilcox.
