AN ANALYST’S THOUGHTS ON NICK YOUNG
Wizards analyst Glenn Consor emailed me his thoughts on the selection of Nick Young. Here’s what he had to say:
Every Draft someone slips, and with a little luck, you get the player you thought would be off the board. When Philly picked Thaddeus Young at 12 and Detroit picked Rodney Stuckey at 15, Nick Young slid into DC.
I had chance to broadcast Nick Young’s first and second round NCAA games for Westwood One in Spokane Washington this past March with a birds eye view. Nick can flat out score in a myriad of ways. A great mid range player that can find ways to score off the bounce as well as off the ball. Nick at 6′7 ” possesses many offensive weapons consisting of a monster cross over, a stop and go game al a Steve Nash, a lightening quick pull-up off the dribble, and great body control which gives him the ability to make tough and off balance shots.
Has a great understanding of the screen and role game, and like Rip Hamilton really moves well without the ball and knows how to rub off screens, read defenses, pick and probe, and score. I think he’s better off the bounce than Rip Hamilton at this stage. This is where he will fit beautifully into Eddie Jordan’s system and will be the ultimate scoring backcourt mate with Gilbert. Really runs the floor and was one of the top 5 finishers in transition in college basketball last season. Loves to run the floor and runs like a gazelle.
Nick, who can stick the three , shooting 44% from downtown, plays with a ton of emotion and passion for the game, he’s very animated. He will need to add strength and a focus on defense to develop into a complete player, as expected. He has all of the physical tools to defend two’s and threes in the NBA. I think this young man can contribute right away in Eddie’s system. Wizards fans should be extremely happy with this pick at 16. I loved him in the NCAA’s.

He has also served as an analyst for NBATV for the past four years. Well I was already confident about Young, but hearing from someone whose quiet an expert is great, we got the best we could, that’s great.
June 29th, 2007 at 12:39 PM
just wrote a comment in the post below

I’m starting to be converted to the idea that Young might turn out to be a good pick. Most of his negatives are on defense and in turnovers. I’m hoping that stuff can be fixed. He can definitely shoot the ball.
June 29th, 2007 at 4:04 PM
Check this out Young Jersey is NO# 1
0- Gilbert
1- Nick
2- DeShawn
3- Caron
4- Antawn
June 29th, 2007 at 4:17 PM
At first I was worried about this pick, but now feel a little better. Just hope the Wizards as a team can really step up on defence next season. It sounds as they won’t have any problems scoring.
June 29th, 2007 at 6:57 PM
Here’s a clip showing what the Young1 can do!
June 29th, 2007 at 8:03 PM
hes got hops but i just hope he gets Defensive
June 29th, 2007 at 10:06 PM
hey i believe that the wizards should trade Antonio Daniels and bring in Steve Blake…i believe he could do as good as AD…and it would be a lot cheaper….Steve Blake is a free agent!!
June 29th, 2007 at 10:07 PM
it would be nice to have Jerry Stackhouse back in DC to come in and score off the bench..he’s a free agent
June 29th, 2007 at 10:10 PM
here’s a list of all free-agents for this summer!!

June 29th, 2007 at 10:49 PM
can any one dig up a list of Centers that are free agents this year or a list of people looking to move there center or trade talks about there center ?
June 29th, 2007 at 11:47 PM
Hey Guys,
Haven’t posted in a while. Been pretty busy. I’ve definately been keeping up with all the action though. What a great turnout for the Wiz in this draft. I’m very pleased. VERY pleased.
Adding Steve Blake is a good idea. He went into Denver and did a great job their immeadiately, serving as their only true point guard. He also thrived while playing for the Bucks as well. He’s quitley having himself a fine career. With these weapons, he would be great with us (again).
I don’t think we need a guy like Stackhouse. Well, I don’t think we need Stackhouse. He’s and scorer, and now with the addition of Young-gun we have plently of offensive firepower.
We need to replace Brendan asap. Looking at that free agent list, the guys who caught my eye are PJ Brown, Mikey Moore, and Gerald Wallace. I know Wallace may reel in top dollar but I really like him…Especially how he kills us every time, so for some reason I think he would be good for us, especially on D with blocks. Brown and Moore are stable. PJ is very consistent and has a way of bothering players when he is guarding them. Moore had a great season with NJ this past year fillin in for Nenad, or as I call him ‘Nads’. I also want a guy by the name of Chris Wilcox, but I don’t see how we could get him.
Those are my two cents on the draft and our current roster. Cant wait for this season!
Oh yeah, so my brother got his autographed Gilbert stuf delivered weeks ago, and I got a 25 credit to my bank account. ???? Anyone know whats up with that?
June 30th, 2007 at 12:51 AM
yeah he droped the price so that all the people who bought the late set would get the same price as the early bird ! but i never got a chance to get one an i am still waiting on the next aution……Wizards.com should talk to gil and get us a date or a month or a year lol
June 30th, 2007 at 7:18 AM
Draftexpress gives us an “A” in the draft:
Picks: Nick Young (#16), Dominic McGuire (#47)
A
The Wizards couldn’t believe their luck when a player they had ranked highly in Nick Young fell to them at #16. Young fills a need at the 2-guard spot and had the talent to easily get drafted in the late lottery. His athleticism and perimeter shooting on the wing will come in handy as Jarvis Hayes is finally shown the door. If he can learn to defend adequately and do the little things, the Wizards might have found their starting shooting guard of the future.
In the middle of the second round, the Wizards got a player who we’ve liked all year in Dominic McGuire. He brings even more athleticism, as well as plenty of versatility as a combo forward. McGuire has been playing hurt for some time now, so we may not have even seen the best of him yet. All in all, the Wizards did a really nice job both filling needs and getting players with solid upside to continue to improve where they were drafting.
June 30th, 2007 at 7:27 AM
nbadraft.net says of our picks:
Nick Young 6-6 195 SG USC Jr. — A specimen at the 2G spot. 7-foot wing span. Fade away has become automatic. He is their top-rated 2.
Dominic McGuire 6-8 210 SF Fresno St. Jr. — NBA athlete with great length, skill level catching up. They have him rated 10th among 3s (the top 6 on their board were taken in the 1st 12 picks).
An excellent draft for the Wizards I think!
June 30th, 2007 at 10:07 AM
Yeah only, I got the early bird package but got my money back instead of my Gil jersey and shoe.
June 30th, 2007 at 11:09 AM
Maybe he ran out? I got mine not too long ago…
June 30th, 2007 at 12:11 PM
Well I received an email not long ago which said that if you haven’t receive your package this far it might be cuz it takes long to Gil to personnalize every jersey and that he wants to do it well…
June 30th, 2007 at 2:40 PM
Yeah, I heard that as well. But when I saw that my account was credited with 25 dollars, I pretty much figured I wont be getting it. Oh well.
June 30th, 2007 at 3:05 PM
hey i believe that the wizards should trade Antonio Daniels and bring in Steve Blake…i believe he could do as good as AD…and it would be a lot cheaper….Steve Blake is a free agent!!…i would also like to see the Wiz make a move for Anderson Varejao, Mikkie Moore, Jason Kapono, Earl Boykins, and maybe PJ Brown…one or two guys of this list would be good if we need another scoring spark off the bench i would also like Jannero Pargo…I can already see the Wiz re-signing Andray Blatche, DeShawn Stevenson, and probably Donnell Taylor….here’s a list of all free-agents for this summer!!
June 30th, 2007 at 4:41 PM
How would you split the MLE between the guys you want?
June 30th, 2007 at 5:12 PM
Well I never heard of so many players at the same time…. do you realize that we have a salary cap??
June 30th, 2007 at 5:31 PM
Sorry I didn’t read the “one or two guys of this list”… But do you really think these guys are the right ones…
June 30th, 2007 at 5:43 PM
yea i love to have some high energy guys like mikkie moore or anderson varejao, or some nice scoring on the bench like jason kapono or jannero pargo
June 30th, 2007 at 7:01 PM
Mehmet Okur was in the news a wile back any one know if he wanted to be traded or could be jerked away ?
June 30th, 2007 at 7:56 PM
Well you think we need scorers right now?? We just got Young, we have arenas, butler, we might keep stevenson, I’m not sure we’re gonna need scorers, high energy okay, but high defensive energy guys, and big guys for sure.
July 1st, 2007 at 1:26 AM
first things first, steve blake is good but everyone else that people have mentioned aren’t worth it. PJ Brown is like 90 years old and unless we can get him for the bare veteran’s minimum for one year, i don’t see him being worth it(since he’ll want more than that, he’s not worth it). Mikki Moore was good this year, but I bet he’s a one year wonder more than anything else (Read Brian Cardinal and Bobby Simmons and to some degree Larry Hughes. These players aren’t tanking or anything but they’ve hardly been worth half of what they get paid now after 1 great year). Gerald Wallace will put us in the luxury tax zone and then some. Anderson Varejao will certainly cost us but he might be the only free agent that i’d feel safe giving money to but again, luxury tax looms near. Jason Kapono would be good addition if we didn’t just add a 2 guard through the draft and is expected to resign our starting 2 guard(DS) with a returning veteran combo guard(AD), in other words, no minutes for lots of money. I don’t want to see Cleveland+Damon Jones situation in washington with Kapono.
July 1st, 2007 at 8:04 AM
but who do you guys think we can get for etan thomas maybe we can package him with AD and next years 2nd round pick and we may be able to get someone decent….if we do trade AD anyways which i would only approve of is if we were getting a good player in return..but if we do i think we should go after Steve Blake look at the nice job he did with Denver!! at first i was a little iffy about Dom McGuire but now after reading al his stats and comparing them and reading all these blogs and comments im starting to think that this may be one of the biggest steals in the draft according to his stats i would think this kid would be gone in the mid first round to late first round…this kid is good…o yeah and another thing i say we only trade jamison if we can get Amre Stoudemire, Jermaine O’Neal, or Pau Gasol if we can’t get these guys i believe or team should stay the same
July 1st, 2007 at 9:52 AM
Etan has a big contract. It’ll be hard to trade it.
July 1st, 2007 at 10:17 AM
I think we should more look at a possible Brendan trade. I like the guy but just as me you know the problems we have with him and he’d be easier to trade than ethan…
July 1st, 2007 at 11:08 AM
“The Washington Wizards will offer guard DeShawn Stevenson a three-year, $9 million deal today, a league source with knowledge of the situation said last night.”
…according to the Times today…
July 1st, 2007 at 12:27 PM
yes i hope DeShawn accepts now we still need to sign Andray a contract just like DeShawns should dofdi have a strange feeling that Ernie is going to try to bring back Jarvis but i dont like the idea…LilGil i agree if Etans contract is to big then we should trade Haywood…another factor in this is who shows more heart and hustles more while their in the game?? this should be easy without a doubt etan i say we package brendan with a player or two
July 1st, 2007 at 12:49 PM
We sign Stevenson to 3mil per, and we match NJ’s offer to Andray (4mil)… We give the Vet’s deal to Booth.. and thats it..
I don’t think we have much more room or else it goes into the lux tax.
The only other move(s) would be in a trade..
July 1st, 2007 at 1:33 PM
There’s no way Hayes stays after Nick Young was picked. Young was drafted as a replacement for either Jarvis or DeShawn, so if DeShawn stays, Jarvis is gone.
July 1st, 2007 at 2:57 PM
wouldnt yoo like to bring ack donnell taylor to a veterans min.
July 1st, 2007 at 2:58 PM
wat do you guys think about Ron Lewis from Ohio State i think he would be good with the Wiz
July 1st, 2007 at 4:44 PM
Young is *a rookie* — he doesn’t “replace Jarvis or DeShawn.” Gotta see what he can do.
I hope we bring in an undrafted big like Kyle Visser, Rashad Jennings-Jones, or Daryl Watkins to compete in the summer league and maybe be invited to camp.
I also hope we bring in an undrafted point guard — my favorite is Zabien Dowdell, but we could also bring in Bobby Brown and/or J.R. Reynolds. Dowdell compares well w/ several of the drafted point guards.
July 1st, 2007 at 5:10 PM
This trade works under NBA trade rules
Wizards get Steve Blake, Baron Davis and Marcus Camby.
Nuggets get Sarunas Jasikevicius, Antawn Jamison and Andris Biendris.
Warriors get Kenyon Martin, Roger Mason Jr and Brendan Haywood
July 1st, 2007 at 6:43 PM
that three team deal is nice put do you think that Baron Davis and Gilbert Arenas can co-exist…and i like steve blake
July 1st, 2007 at 6:53 PM
hmm.. with that trade.. why don’t we keep antawn and let baron go to the nuggets?
July 1st, 2007 at 7:04 PM
Looking at that trade, I don’t see why those teams would include the Wizards…
Warriors would want something more than that to give up Baron and Biedrins… they could just get Camby and leave the Wizards out.
July 1st, 2007 at 7:16 PM
Yeah I was thinking the same, the Warriors would probably not agree to let Baron go in that case…

16. Nick Young, SG, Washington Wizards
Silky smooth with a tremendous midrange game, Young is the kind of player who can come in and put up stats right away in the NBA. He is as efficient as they come (a fantasy owner’s dream), shooting 52.5 percent from the floor, 78.6 percent from the line and 44.0 percent from downtown during his junior season at USC. He will be a solid scorer and will be able to knock down some 3s, but I’d love to see him really get after it on the defensive end. With his long arms, one would think he could rack up steals at a high rate, but he disappointed in that category in college, stealing just 0.7 per game in 2006-07. Young should be able to beat out DeShawn Stevenson for the starting shooting guard spot in Washington, but since the big three (Gilbert Arenas, Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison) command most of the touches, we can only expect moderate production. That said, if any of those three go down with an injury, Young has the ability to step up and be a productive fantasy scorer and 3-point shooter.
July 2nd, 2007 at 9:11 AM
You think the Hawks are going to trade Josh Smith for Antonio Daniels? Whatever you are smoking, I want some.
Nick Young is *not* going to beat out DeShawn and start. He is a rookie with a zillion holes in his game — and a big upside too. Lets not put too much pressure on this kid.
In one or another piece of coverage, btw, someone said that had Dominic McGuire stayed in school another year, he was a likely lottery pick in the ‘08 draft. That’s pretty good value at #47!
July 3rd, 2007 at 7:57 AM
No way I want Stackhouse back. Bad chemistry.
I like Blake took, but we already have a good backup PG.
A few weeks back I looked at the FA centers and decided Chris Mihm was the best available.
Something just soaked in with me. EG said that whoever he took with #16, he wouldn’t be someone who could come in and make an impact right away. That sounds like Hayes or some other veteran FA will be a big part of the rotation, at least in the beginning. Young will be on the bench.
July 3rd, 2007 at 9:37 AM
But, EG didn’t think he’d get Nick Young w/ #16, so I don’t know that the prediction was anything but trying not to get people over-excited.
Both the picks and Pecherov will be on the team. So 3 guys gotta go. To me, it’s Mason, Hall and maybe Ruffin. If not Ruffin, then the third seems likely to be either Hayes or Stevenson. Between them, I might prefer to keep Hayes. He has as good a handle and is a better defender. DeShawn can slash, which Jarvis rarely does. Price will probably be about the same.
Still, I think there will be at least one trade or at least one more meaningful roster change.
July 3rd, 2007 at 9:44 AM
Blake is looking for the full mid-level exception — we’re not going to spend that on him.
July 3rd, 2007 at 9:02 PM
I much prefer Stevenson over the player Hayes has been so far. I’m not sure Hayes is a better defender - he’s bigger but he isn’t as quick. Hayes does rebound better. Stevenson is much the better offensive player.
As it stands now, Mason, Hall and Ruffin go, I think. But I’d bet money that something we can’t foresee will happen.
Wouldn’t it be nice if Hayes finally realized his potential this year?
Is Hall really a SF? I thought he was considered a PF. What did he play at GW?
July 4th, 2007 at 8:52 AM
Run the numbers on Hayes and Stevenson; there’s no real difference. I’m thinking Hayes will get no real offers and be available as a bargain. Stevenson had a career year; rewarding that is risky. He is at best an average 2 in the league.
If both the picks, Pecherov *and Navarro* are on the team, we have enormous flexibility and rethink a lot of things. If so, I can see Daniels going, certainly — I’d like to trade him to Portland which *definitely* needs a veteran point guard. I can even see Antawn going, though it would be sad to lose him.
As I’ve said elsewhere, I have my eye on LaMarcus Aldridge, although I don’t know if Portland would let him go. But with him, Oden, Frye, Przybilla and Lafrentz, that’s a lot of centers on one roster!

I do think you are right on the spot with this post, I could use a lot of stuff for my new study, thank you very much.
