WIZARDS SELECT NICK YOUNG

The Wizard selected Nick Young with the 16th overall pick of the 2007 NBA Draft. Young, a 6-6 200 pound guard, averaged 17.5 points last year for the USC Trojans.

Career Highlights: Earned First Team All-Pac-10 honors his sophomore and junior seasons. Also earned All-District honors from the NABC and USBWA both years. Finished collegiate career as USC’s sixth all-time leading scorer with 1,486 points.

In the second round, the Wizards selected Dominic McGuire from Fresno State.

i know he’s an outstanding talent out from the SoCal area, but why oh why did we draft a guard? Do you want to continue to rely on Brendan Haywood streaky player and his sparring partner/poet Etan Thomas?

For this draft, the Wizards NEED a good guard. Overall, I’d say they need a center, but I think with the pieces of Daniels, Stevenson and Hayes, they can dump one of them plus Ruffin, Heywood or Thomas and pick up a good center and have Young learn the Gurad ropes.

Hopefully he will be the scoring threat off the bench Jarvis Hayes or Roger Mason Jr. were supposed to be. We should be able to get a fair big with our second pick or a packaged trade with Haywood involved.

Our big men are terrible….so why didnt we draft a good big man or two? This is getting ridiculous. Wizards management is a bunch of morons.

Time June 29, 2007 at 6:21 AM

First of all, jason smith is not the answer for us in the post defensively. he might be offensively in a few years but not now. eg made the right decision picking young because he is exactly what agent zero wanted and thats all eg is thinking of doing right now so that arenas stays. also mcguire is not a guard, he is a forward that can play the 3 and 4 who can BLOCK SHOTS and REBOUND and he is very athletic. and about gray and gasol they are both very slow sluggish and not really the defenders. gasol might develop into something good, not a star though, but i dont think that gray will ever be better than what brendan is now. so with what we got, i think that eg did a good job. i would have looked into drafting green and tangle daniels in front of peoples faces that have a big man expendable.

Comment from stevevu

also, most guards that come into the nba cant really defend but a lot of them learn how to be very good defenders if taught right.

He could be the steal of the 2nd round. Good job again Ernie.

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time June 29, 2007 at 7:51 AM

None of the centers were worth a #16 pick. Jason Smith is a 4 not a 5, and we have similar players in Blatche and Pecherov. All the same, if he is really good, he’ll be coming down the road from Philly to beat on us for years.

I was *praying* for Al Thornton or Julian Wright, but maybe Stevevu is right, and the kid can learn defense. Dominic McGuire (http://www.nbadraft.net/admincp/profiles/dominicmcguire.html and http://www.draftexpress.com/viewprofile.php?p=1162 ) looks like a steal in round 2.

Kyle Visser wasn’t drafted, so we still have a chance at a big, slow white guy. :) He is probably better than Gray (but not as big). Marc Gasol may or may not even play in the league.

I think this is a great look for the wizard.
Without agent 0 and Butler, wizard don’t have a number 3 guy that can give you that outside present, it was proven in the playoff!

When our 2 best scorers went down, the wizard lack the points on the board. Plus, since both Agent O and Stevenson may opt out of their contract, who knows if we will have them in a few years.

Now, the wizard can go get a big name in Kevin G, who has the experience as well as a new face..
trade Brenden, jarvis, thomas, booth, ruffin to the bucks for the kid from, China
“Yi Jianlian” since he does not want to be there, free up some salery cap space and get Kevin Garrnet .
KG would love to play with the Wizard and Yi Jianlian playing at the V-center in the heart of chinatown~

Comment from butchie
Time June 29, 2007 at 8:36 AM

Talk with the Bucks and trade Thomas, Brendon, Stevenson and Booth for the kid from China Yi Jianlian.
free some cap room and get kevin G.
both Gil and Stevenson will otp out of their contract,
so thery may not be here anyway!

Nick will fit in fine with the Butler and Antwan.

With Yi and KG in, DC we now have a run for the crown

Comment from mysmissur

I don’t get all of these people complaining about how the Wizards didn’t draft Rudy Fernandez, Taigo Splitter or Marc Gasol. Washington drafted two international players last year (which I didn’t get). When you draft international players, they come with a lot of baggage – learning a new system and language and often with contract issues. With Young and McGuire, the Wizards pick up two proven players. Remember, for every Dirk or Tony Parker who gets drafted, there are guys like Peter John Ramos.

Comment from stevevu

butchie, that is one of the worst ideas for trades i have heard yet. first of all why would the bucks want to take on 4 or 5 people in exchange for 1. Also, why would they trade for a few average players and bench warmers and give away a potential superstar. we would have give away atleast one of the big 3 to get him and it is not worth it. yes yi is upset with the pick, but i dont think that just because his representatives dont like where he is headed that he has the power to demand a trade so he wont go anywhere. and for garnet, at 31, he is not worth trading for. we would have to give up arenas probably and maybe someone else. so at the end of the day, with your trade, we would have 1 of the big 3 and maybe 6 other players, most of them PF. That would set us back another 10 years. this is not a video game.
as for what we can do, young is not ready to start so resign deshawn and blatche. i dont know if hayes is going to draw much attention so we might be able to get him cheap and would be a good 8th option off the bench or maybe get someone a little better than him. as for the much needed help in the front court. i dont know if we need another swing man anymore so i dont know if trading haywood or etan for one would be necesary unless an amazing offer came along. i would keep an eye on what portland does because they drafted like 5 people so they are going to be overloaded and might even buy out the contracts of some of their players.

All of the big men that were worth the 16th pick were drafted before the 16th pick. The best one going number one and the worst of the best big men going 9th, so why waste a decent first round pick on a second round talent. This is something that Wes would have done in the past. I guess all the years of him running the team in to the ground has poisoned most peoples brains. I think the Young pick is fantastic. And actually before the draft started I was hoping that he would fall to us at the 16th pick. It is hard to find a player in the draft that can get his own shot and have the confidence to take it on a regular basis, and when playing next to gilbert that is what is needed. Taking Young had nothing to do with not needing a big man, we definitely need that, but taking the best avaiblabe talent at the 16th pick. It just so happens that the 16th pick of Young can help us in an area that we are seriously lacking too. I like the direction that Grunfeld is taking the Wizards. It finally seems like we have a solid plan in place, unlike the Unseld and Jordan years. We can definitiely find a big defensive presence in camp this year. So again why waste a decently high first round pick, which also means a little bit of a bigger contract, on a slow plodding center that isn’t any better than what we have. Seriously people, use your heads on this one. When all is said and done I think Young will turn out to be a great pick. And quit freaking out on the Gil situation, there is no way we are not giving him max money after this coming season.

Both good picks. Especially Young. ….But can we please make some moves to get rid of Haywood the cry baby at center? We need a center that plays D, not one that takes fade aways. And I love Etan, but he’s a good bench player at best. Get rid of Haywood and throw in AD and/or Jarvis and we could get someone decent.

I actually like Young on the roster. I can see the backcourt being just as it was (if not better) than when Larry Hughes was still around. Our big men this year may have not stepped up as much as we wanted, but next year could be a whole other story. We have Pecherov in the mix and he will definitley open up the floor with his outside shooting, plus I think he has more talent than any of the big men we could have drafted this year. Haywood and Hayes I believe (or at least hope) will be traded. I also did some research on Maguire and consensus is that he can be high energy guy that can create a lot of loose balls on defense as well as being a lockdown type defender on some of the better SFs out there. I do agree that we are probably one solid bigman away from doing serious damage in the east, but definitley dont want to get tunnel vision in filling one need when there are other needs as well. In Grunfeld we trust!!! Every year he has found a way to make this team better.

hey i believe that the wizards should trade Antonio Daniels and bring in Steve Blake…i believe he could do as good as AD…and it would be a lot cheaper….Steve Blake is a free agent!!…i would also like to see the Wiz make a move for Anderson Varejao, Mikkie Moore, Jason Kapono, Earl Boykins, and maybe PJ Brown…one or two guys of this list would be good if we need another scoring spark off the bench i would also like Jannero Pargo…I can already see the Wiz re-signing Andray Blatche, DeShawn Stevenson, and probably Donnell Taylor….here’s a list of all free-agents for this summer!!

but who do you guys think we can get for etan thomas maybe we can package him with AD and next years 2nd round pick and we may be able to get someone decent….if we do trade AD anyways which i would only approve of is if we were getting a good player in return..but if we do i think we should go after Steve Blake look at the nice job he did with Denver!! at first i was a little iffy about Dom McGuire but now after reading al his stats and comparing them and reading all these blogs and comments im starting to think that this may be one of the biggest steals in the draft according to his stats i would think this kid would be gone in the mid first round to late first round…this kid is good…o yeah and another thing i say we only trade jamison if we can get Amre Stoudemire, Jermaine O’Neal, or Pau Gasol if we can’t get these guys i believe or team should stay the same

Comment from Tom Mandel

I also think McGuire has a chance to be a major steal.

Keep in mind that the biggest problem in making trades is the impact of the cap; you gotta take back salaries that about equal what you trade. Trade Etan and AD, and you have to take back @9m in salary. The guys the other side wants to trade were problems for them, obviously.

We will have a mid-level exception to use on a free agent, but I wonder whether we’ll use it.

i love grunfeld I dont know if hes made any bad choices thus far, I think he knows talent, he drafted michael redd to replace allen, he said nick young by far was the best talent, mcguire was also a steal he had rebounding numbers out the ying yang, he’s defense is solid but i hear he falls for alot of ball fakes, the quote was whenever you answer a question say yes instead of nodding cause when you nod he jumps out the room trying to block something. Another knock was he couldn’t shoot that well but he was working on his shooting pre draft and can improve his mechanics i believe, hes a hard worker as well and very in shape and tough. I like our draft i hoped we didnt get jason smith, Not saying he sucks but he has short hands and we already have pech and blatche and might get visser on the cheap. The moment new orleans didnt pick young i knew we had him, stuckey or thornton.

Personally , I like the pieces we have put together. The addition of Juan Carlos Navarro gives us depth , scoring, and trade options. I would like to see us keep Stevenson , Jamison , and Daniels if possible. However , the addition of Navarro puts keeping Daniels in play. Daniels provides good steady leadership at the point.
And we saw last year what a good veteran leader such as Jamison means to a team when Arenas starting acting up and Jamison had to sit him down and school him. So we may need that Leadership from Jamison in the locker room again.

My keepers would be : Arenas ; Butler ; Jamison ; Percherov ; Navarro ; Stevenson ; Young ; Songaila ; and Blatche.

My options for trade would be : Haywood ; Thomas ; Taylor ; Hayes ; Booth ; Ruffin ; Mason, Jr. ; and possibly Daniels if I couldn’t avoid it. But I would try to hold him back in any trade proposal.

I would try to group any combination of the Non-Keepers in a trade to acquire a full time center. There are possibly some decent centers out there that could be acquired. Keeping both Haywood and Thomas is not good , just for team chemistry sake. So one or the other has to go. I would prefer to keep Etan even though he is playing out of position.

EG , lets go get us a center, and let us start to rock-and-roll.

They just sigh Kevin and now they will be a force in the East. I’m not sure if you watch basketball or have played basketball or maybe your were just one of thoses play by play guys that knows nothing about basketball, but every championship team that I’ve seen, won because they had a big man! and speaking of big men, and I’m sure your following basketball, there is talk that Yi might be going to!!!!! yep Boston or New York!!

you need a big man to play this game, everyone knows this.
Maybe just maybe the Wizard can get O’Neal from the pacers

I would like to see what New York and Boston are going to do
