A MOCK DRAFT FROM MY PAL “JIMMY”

The following Mock Draft was sent to me by my buddy “Jimmy Donnelly” (yes, it’s an alias). These picks and comments do not reflect that of the Wizards organization, but rather of an individual with over a decade of experience closely (some may say obsessively) following then-TNT/now-ESPN’s draft coverage. FINAL MOCK DRAFTS FROM AROUND THE NET

“Jimmy’s” Picks and Thoughts:

1. Greg Oden, POR
Elicits comparisons to Bill Russell, who he played with briefly in AAU in 1951.

2. Kevin Durant, SEA
Tutored by Gilbert Arenas during recent EA Sports commercial shoots, Durant is ready to make an immediate impact on the court – and on the blogs.

3. Al Horford, ATL
Having passed on Deron Williams and Chris Paul to pick Marvin Williams in ’05, the Hawks pass on the draft’s best point guard again, and pick a big body for the second year in a row (Shelden Williams).

4. Mike Conley, MEM
After watching Tony Parker dominate the playoffs, rookie Head Coach Marc Iavaroni wants a Parker of his own.

5. Yi Jianlian, BOS
No word on if Yi’s brain-type suits the liking of Ainge, but with Daisuke Matsuzaka pitching for the Red Sox across town, Boston instantly becomes the Far East’s favorite city for American sports.

6. Jeff Green, MIL
Green didn’t work out for MJ’s Cats picking 8th, so the guess is that he’s been promised he’d be gone by then.

7. Joakim Noah, MIN
With KG’s status uncertain, McHale tabs another energetic and recognizable player to build around…last year’s #1 pick if he chose to go.

8. Brandan Wright, CHA
With a staff filled with former teammates, colleagues and friends, of course MJ picks the Carolina kid, who was rumored to go as high as 3 in recent days.

9. Spencer Hawes, CHI
Hawes helps fill a void on a young team with everything but interior scoring.

10. Corey Brewer, SAC
The Kings grab what could be the draft’s best swing man at a position that has unearthed gems in the past…Caron Butler (’02), Joe Johnson (‘01) and Paul Pierce (’98).

11. Acie Law, ATL
Finally. Atlanta drafts their point guard of the future.

12. Al Thornton, PHI
For the first of their three first-round picks, Philly tabs Thornton, who the locals will soon love.

13. Nick Young, NO
Looks like Nick Cannon, but he should love life next to Chris Paul.

14. Javaris Crittenton, LAC
Gruesome injury to Livingston leaves the Clips in need of a point guard.

15. Rodney Stuckey, DET
Little known guard said to be coveted by Pistons.

16. Julian Wright, WAS
Lottery talent falls to the waiting Wiz.

17. Jason Smith, NJN
Smith answers the age-old question: What would happen if Keith Van Horn and Chris Mihm had a kid?

18. Josh McRoberts, GSW
Another year, another Dukie in the first round.

19. Daequan Cook, LAL
Three Ohio State freshman in Top 20. Heckuva job ‘recruiting’ at OSU.

20. Derrick Byars, MIA
If Posey leaves, Byars fills the void.

21. Thaddeus Young, PHI
Could be a lottery pick. Could slip further. The talented, but raw Young is one of the draft’s biggest question marks.

22. Jared Dudley, CHA
Dudley makes the draft’s biggest jump. ACC Player of the Year should be familiar with the basketball culture in Carolina.

23. Wilson Chandler, NYK
Late cancellations of workouts fueled speculation that Isiah has promised Chandler he’s the guy at 23.

24. Rudy Fernandez, PHX
Though his name sounds like a left-handed journeyman relief pitcher’s, the skilled combo guard provides depth/insurance for the Suns.

25. Marco Belinelli, UTA
Utah needs a shooter. The sweet-shooting Italian is a good fit for the Jazz.

26. Gabe Pruitt, HOU
If Mike James doesn’t fit for Adelman, Pruitt will be given the reigns to a team in need of a good point man who can shoot.

27. Marcus Williams, DET
Another NBA player named Williams, and with the same exact name as the Nets’ version. Confusion reigns.

28. Petteri Koponen, SA
Spurs last three first-rounders were Ian Mahinmi (France), Beno Udrih (Italy) and Leandro Barbosa (Brazil). The Finnish Koponen has to be the pick here.

29. Nick Fazekas, PHX
The self proclaimed best shooter in the draft is a good fit on a team where shooters seem to grow on trees (or cactuses).

30. Aaron Gray, PHI
The Pittsburgh product stays in PA; provides an alternative to Dalembert in the future.

Like I said in another comment — if Julian wright falls to us, we pick him. At 16, he’s a steal.

I agree with Tom pick Julian Wright. I still don’t know what the Wizards will do with the center position. Another thing, I hope the Wizards be very careful with the moves they make this summer, because that trade rumor about Amare Stoudemire coming to the Hawks scared me a little. Can you image playing in the same conference were everyone has a big man and you don’t? Poor Etan will be working his a** off playing against Shaq, Dwight Howard, Emeka Okafor and Amare Stoudemire.

I wish Julian Wright falls to us….just like Tom said “he’s a steal!!!!!!!!!”

Make that four…Julian Wright seems to me to be an absolute best case scenario for the Wiz. If I am hoping for guys to drop to the Wiz, I would wish for Jeff Green. I know that is not going to happen though. There is no doubt in my mind that if Wright slips, he will be the best available.

I saw a mock draft that had us picking Julian Wright and Reyshawn Terry. That would be a heck of a draft…maybe the best in the league.

I like Glen Davis too. I like that he has drop fat, and seemingly added muscle. He is not too tall, but I think he would be a good plug in the middle that could help with inside offense and rebounding.

I can’t see Terry falling to us in 2, but you never know. For that matter, I can’t see Julian Wright falling to us in the first round! But if so, lets grab him and run!

I keep hearing about guys ‘moving up’ into the bottom 1/2 of round 1; if so, there have to be guys moving down too! Maybe we’ll get Gray at our #47, or Visser, or Davis, or… some guy w/ an unpronounceable name that we’ve never heard of! Get thee behind me, Stanko Barac!

i think EG center problem was the reason for OP i think that’s why he was brought over to get the low post a little more help but we need a 2 just not as bad as the center spot and we also need a bench and i think we will be looking to sure up the bench in this draft ( or at least add some parts that have the potential to do that down the road)

I agree with you Wiz4life. We need someone who can come off the bench when Gil has to rest a little, we have to find a guy who can score and keep the rythm, cuz we always loose our rythm when we enter the third quarter and need the bench guys to step up. Especially if we have to let DeShawn go.
