WIZARDS BRING IN FIVE HOPEFULS

Wizards assistant coach Wes Unseld Jr. and Co. put the following draft eligible players through a series of workouts today at Verizon Center: Jamareo Davidson (Alabama), Ali Traore (France), Brandon Heath (San Diego State), Marco Belinelli (Italy) and Glen Davis (Louisiana State).

QUOTES:
Glen Davis, Forward, Louisiana State
On his workout:
“I just wanted to show the Wizards what I can do and what type of player I am. Hopefully, I got that message across today.”

On losing weight in preparation for the draft:
“I wanted to be the best player I can be; and for health reasons. You want to live a long time and in this profession you have to be in shape. My highest weight was 350 pounds, but that was a long time ago, and now I try not to go over 295.”

On advice from former college teammate Tyrus Thomas:
“We talk everyday. He is one of my best friends. He tells me that I have to keep pushing because they are going to be a lot of trials and tribulations. He just tries to keep me humble and level headed.”

Glen Davis is *immensely talented.* But, because of his weight and perhaps also because of his lack of height, he is projected in the 2d half of the 2d round. He is *by far* the most talented player so projected. I really hope we pick him in round 2, though it’d be no surprise to me if after working out around the league he rises some in the draft.

Jamereo Davidson has great length and athleticism; draftexpress says he plays extremely soft, avoids all contact, wants to play a more perimeter-oriented game. Not a great basketball IQ. He is projected, like Davis, in the 2d half of round 2.

Ditto Traore — another 2d rounder. But more of a physical 4.

Belinelli is a highly touted Italian 2. Very young. You have to wonder how long it’ll be before he can be a contributor. Brandon Heath is a 6’4″ scoring guard; not projected to be drafted.

We are looking at *a lot* of players this year. I wonder whether the Wizards have a trade in mind that would bring in another pick. I could see trading Hayes’s rights to Portland for someone (?) and a pick. But, I just made that up, so who knows what if anything is going to happen.

A good number of players have definitely stopped by DC over the past two weeks. But actually TM, most teams aren’t looking at nearly as many players as in years past. In previous seasons, teams would start working out players in mid-May (assuming they weren’t still in the playoffs). Now, with the rule in place that teams couldn’t work out players til after June 6, teams probably didn’t work out as many players as they did last Spring.

TM – I take it back. It looks like when all is said and done, we’ll have taken a look at nearly as many people as last year.

I think this year, the workouts were geared towards looking at 4-5 people at a time. In previous seasons, sometimes two people would come in for a work out.

Eric — thanks for setting me straight on the numbers. Another thing I was thinking was that this draft being so deep, it’s worth it to look carefully at a lot of guys. Although, to tell the truth, there are some names on the Wizards’ work-out list that I’ve never seen anywhere else.

One guy that grades high among 3s is Dominic McGuire, and a lot of people have him projected to go in the 2d round. We’re not working him out.

Did anyone else catch that blurb about possible Antawn for Marion trade? I’ve got mixed feelings about that one.

Glen Davis has some odd mechanics on his jump shot that will *not* fly in the NBA. Otherwise, he looks smooth.

Belinelli looks *awesome.* Is he under some kind of buy-out? He looks like he can play right now.

TM – Belinelli does have a nice looking shot doesn’t he?

Anyone know when they project Belinelli to go in the draft? That J off the curl will probably be the smoothest looking stroke even if he joined the wizards right now. Is he someone we might be able to grab with our 2nd round pick?

PS. I get weary of players who loose weight during contract years or draft years only to balloon up after signing their contract again so if I had a vote, I’d veto Davis.

Nara – most mock drafts have Belinelli going late first round/early second round.
