STEVENSON’S BEST WAS IN DC

From the Wizards Post Season Guide:

“In his seventh professional season — but his first in DC — DeShawn Stevenson enjoyed his finest professional season. Stevenson averaged career-high marks in field goal % (.461), 3pt. field goal % (.404) and assists per game (2.7), and as the only Wizard to have appeared in and started every game this season, he stretched his consecutive games started streak to 168 straight games; the third longest streak among active players behind only San Antonio’s Bruce Bowen and Detroit’s Tayshaun Prince.

“Additionally, having come to Washington during the off-season with just 53 total three-pointers made in his first six NBA seasons, Stevenson’s 74 three balls in 2006-07 alone more than doubled his previous tally — and in the late season absence of Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler, Stevenson filled in as one of Washington’s top offensive options. In 11 games in April, Stevenson averaged 13.6 points and 3.7 assists per game to help Washington secure the East’s 7th seed.”

Was this DeShawn’s one and only season in DC? Or will he be back for more? Time will tell and we’ll learn more after July 1. In the meantime, post your thoughts on DeShawn and what you think he meant to the team on (and off) the floor this past season.

I am not sure if I can describe approriately what DeShawn meant to the Wizards this season. With all the craziness and injuries, DeShawn was one of the contants. Coming into this season, I expected he could add some defensive ability, but I wrote him off on offense. He gelled with Gil early, and his offensive output was impressive.

IMHO, we need him back BADLY!!!! DeShawn is a high energy guy and I love the way he plays. He says that he wants to come back to DC. That means that as long we do not embarrass him with the offer, he might be willing to give us a discount. If he is signed long-term, that gives the Wiz the freedom to seek out a guard to add depth. Without DeShawn, we will also certainly have to look “guard” in the first round of the draft. Gil, Deshawn and Antonio have been a good rotation. I would like to keep thatr together and maybe add another for a depth of four, or five (including Mason).

Please Come Back DeShawn…We Love Everything You Do!!!!!!

So…Kobe wants out of LA. What do you all think?

Lakers get: Brendan Haywood
Antawn Jamison

Wizards get: Kobe Bryant

With Olecksiy coming over and Blatche on the rise, Kobe could make us an instant TITLE contender.

I like Stevenson I hope he comes back. He has picked up his game offensively. I do agree the Wizards need more depth at the shooting guard position.

And no I don’t think we have a shot in hell of getting Kobe. Wizards would have to give up Gil. With to both of them, it won’t be enough basketballs on the court at the same time.

No way we get Kobe, not unterested thank’s. I don’t think he would get along with the Wizards’ philosophy and I’m not sure he would add something to the team, to make it a contender team. As it was said we’d have to lose Gil, and there’s simply NO WAY we lose him!! Neither e DeShawn, he’s a great guy, plays some good D (remember that amazing last block against Golden State I think it was??) and is solid on offense. The offseason games did not show what DeShawn brought us this season, he’s part of my “perfect” DC equation but we all know the team won’t match a high offer, let’s hope other teams only watched the playoffs ;)

I think they Should trade Jamison and Haywood for Bryant. I like Jamison but If I was picking from the two I would choose Bryant. I dont believe the Lakers would accept this trade.

I think Stevenson did great this year. I hope he does well for himself, he’s way better then the contract he got this year but who’s complaining.

Sam Cassel will be on People’s: 50 Most Beautiful People list before Kobe comes to Washington (no offense Sam).

It’s just NOT going to happen. Nice fantasy but NO. Give up Antawn Jamison and Haywood for Kobe lol? Wow. That’s not an equivalent trade. And yes I agree, the only way that could ever happen is if Gil is involved in the trade equation along with maybe a draft pick or something else packaged. Anyways that’s not going to happen.

As for Deshawn, I agree with the other guys here. When I first saw him play at the beginning of the season (live) I really didn’t like his style. It was reckless, careless and he seemed like an offensive liability. However Deshawn picked it up during the season and he is a high energy player and perhaps the only other personality on the team next to Gilbert. The Wizards need PERSONALITY and FLAVOR. Sure Caron and Antwan are charismatic but the Wizards do need more passion.

My only knock on Deshawn is consistency. During the playoffs he was pretty quiet. Maybe he was nervous or the pressure of the playoffs and the team handicap bothered him but he really didn’t play like Mr.50.

Deshawn is a solid performer. I agree with wizkid034 and LilGil. I presume he’ll be worth more to us than anyone else. We’ll also need another guard, via a trade, FA or the draft.

plz sign him back n trade Etan and Haywood. We don’t need Kobe. We have Gilbert. We need Camby. We need AJ or Z-Bo.

Deshawn did a great job for us this year an he seems to fell confortable in DC so we need to kee him.
Kobe is the best player in this league (who else can make 81 pts in a game???), bringing him here should be very exiting but it’s should also be controversal!!!
We need firstly a good center (Camby, Mhim…, or may a Stoudamire) and a good 2 comin from the bench who shot well!

Deshawn is the perfect compliment to the Big 3. We need him to remain a Wizard. He plays within the scheme of the scoring trio. We would be hard pressed to find someone else who is willinng and able to play that position and be ok with not scoring. I think Ernie and Abe should open up the bank and pay Deshawn. I think they owe him back pay from this season if nothing else :-(.

DeShawn is an average 2 in the league. That makes him a pretty good player, btw!

If the numbers work out, I’m sure we’ll sign him.

I wish that people would stop with the “Trade Jamison” theme. Does anyone remember when he was hurt and not playing??? Remember how important everyone said it was then! Remember how hard he played for the Wizards during the playoffs. Jamison needs to be with us next year and he deserves to be with us next year! I hope they keep the Big 3 together, trade Haywood and Hayes, offer and sign DeShawn with a respectable contract. We need someone to come off the bench that can score, has high energy, and some defensive skills. I think all of the guys really stepped up with Caron and Gil out of the line up. (DeShawn did do as well but I still think we need him) I think that the experience playing without 2 of our stars will carry to next year.

First of all, DeShawn did “ok” at best through out the season but thats all he needed to be to fit in nicely with the big 3. however, when the wiz needed him the most (in the playoffs) he was nowhere to be found. we really needed him to step up 4 us to have a legitimate chance and he tanked. but he is a good role player. if we keep him or lose him i dont think it would make much of a difference. as far as kobe goes yes he would fit it very well with the wizards offense (lilgil), run and shoot and “we can score more than you” has basically been the wiz philosophy the past 3 years. hope u dont think kobe doesn’t know how to mesh with that. but still we would have to deal gil or caron and thats not gonna happen. i think under different circumstances we could get him for haywood, DeShawn and jamison.. but after we robbed thier franchise for caron while only giving up k. brown they wont want to risk anymore possible front office embarrassments for the sake of their jobs.

Anyhow, we dont need anymore offense, we have enough now. we need to bring in garnett or try to get a trade for one of the top draft picks. anyone think haywood and jamison could steal kevin durant or greg oden? or would we have to trough in stevenson for that to?

Comment from Tom Mandel
Time June 1, 2007 at 7:06 PM

maggicman — would *you* take haywood, jamison and stevenson and give me Oden? Uuuuh, I didn’t think so.

Nice idea, though!

Remember, it really doesn’t even matter if someone *would* do that deal. We can’t dump salaries w/o taking back at least 85% of their salary levels. Jamison is the highest paid Wizard and Haywood makes good $$ too.

Maggicman- Well I said I didn’t think Kobe would fit, simply cuz we already have our own (and better) Kobe. They wouldn’t have to play together if we were interested in Kobe cuz we’d have to give away Gil, but if they had to play together, they wouldn’t get along, as much on the court and off of it… When you have two guys with such personnalities they can’t stick together and it reflects itself in the court, Kobe plays more or less the same way Gil does, and when Kobe gets hot you almost don’t see the rest of the team anymore, almost (less on my opinion) the same for gilbert, so how would it be possible to deal with those guys.

The last thing the Wizards need is the media following Kobe calling him the star of the Wizards. The offense is there but there is a need for slashers like Gerald Wallace. We need a true center who is able to have a low post offense and a low post defense.

Deshawn is great for this team. he did struggle in the playoffs, but short of that he had a solid season. I’d definetly like to see him back. Kobe and KG are nice if there were no such thing as a salary cap… but my ‘realistic’ (slightly) dream team scenario would be to have Deshawn come off the bench (6th man of the year anyone?) with AD starting at the point, sharing ballhandling duties with Gilbert at the 2. Gil plays like a two guard anyway, but i realize, on defense, he’d be even more of a liabilty than he kind of already is lol. we could also trade brendan for andre biendres or daniel dalembert (which i know won’t happen) and viola, instant defense and a post presence who wont be THIRD on the team in rebounds like brendan was lol.

DeShawn is a magnificent player. He has tons of energy and allways gives his best, even if he’s having an off day. He is a great shooter, and also a great defensive player. He is an all-arounder and is a very good addition to the team. I hope he stays with the Wizards. I am sure all of us would love to see him play much more here in DC. As for Haywood, he is done. We need a big man. Haywood is not able to get the job done, and doesn’t score as much as a normal center should. Hopefully, not only do we get a big man to play center, but someone who can do more than just stay underneath the basket. I say, we get rid of Thomas, Haywood, Ruffin, and Booth and get a big man. We allready have more then enough people to score otherwise. Think about it. Gilbert scores atleast 30 points a game, and when we lose, what does that mean? It means the the other players are not helping out as much as they should be. Hopefully, Eddie Jordan will do a better coaching job, by letting everyone actually play for more then atleast 5 minutes, and thus leading to more victories. I am also really looking forward to seeing Mike Hall play this season.

Honestly, I agree with Agent0. I truly believe that DeShawn is a great player. One who we, as a team, can not bare to lose. Though we are losing Haywood, I think that the lost is one that we can bounce back from. Mike Hall is a great player (as well as a great person) and I know that he’s been working out. It would be great to see him back with the team.

What I don’t agree with, however, is getting rid of Etan or Calvin for that matter. I do remember plenty of times both of them coming off the bench and sort of lighting a spark when we needed one to be lit.

The best thing that Stevenson did was shoot the 3-ball. That he did well. But if the Wiz lose him it will not be that big a loss. Once Arenas went down, it became apparant that Stevenson is not a lead guard in this league. That is not disgrace, but the best situation is if he could come off the bench and play against second-line players.
