ARENAS SUFFERS LATERAL MENISCUS TEAR
Washington Wizards President of Basketball Operations Ernie Grunfeld announced today that guard Gilbert Arenas has sustained a lateral meniscus tear in his left knee, and the tear will be repaired by arthroscopic surgery. Arenas, who suffered the injury in the first quarter of Washington’s game vs. Charlotte on April 4, is expected to be out for 2-3 months.

There are no words to describe my current feeling. I hope some changes are made in the off-season. These guys should stay: Gil, Butler, Jamison, Stevenson, Blatche, Daniels, and Songalia. The rest can go!

Wizdom – Arenas walked off but the first step he took was a lunge as he tried to put pressure on the left knee and leg. That could have tore the meniscus even more. I’ll ask the doctor that sits next to me on Friday to learn more about this.
Andrew – what do you mean the season is over? I still see at least 12 games left for the Wizards.

this is definitely not a laughing matter. i still believe in our team and the guys we have. AD prove he can play at a higher level. 2 of the big 3 out isnt good. but the team can learn from this. if we make it all the way, i see a good movie being made about this.

How do you expect them to do any thing when they couldn’t even the Bobcats? I might be a little optimistic if Blatche was coming back on Friday, but it seems like he is still out for 7-10 days. There just isn’t enough talent on this team right now to be beat good teams, and most of the teams coming up are decent with something to play for. Hello Miami or Toronto in the playoffs – I see either one of them sweeping us nastily.
Comment from Ed soysizzle
Time April 5, 2007 at 12:32 PM
we have just enough talent. i agree with u brick. i think we will see this team come together and play their hearts out for gil and caron who has helped bring this team to another possible playoff appearance. i really hope this motivates the team to play harder and finish games.

Larry-do you honestly believe the Wiz can do anything without Gil and Caron? They are in trouble without one of them, take both of them away and they flatline. It is okay to start looking towards next season.
It is called realism!

Joe- I agree with you. However, i want to add Thomas and Booth to your list. Etan brings energy and has proven that he can be productive if he can get consistent minutes. Calvin plays hard and brings a lot to the table offensively and defensively. He is a good role player that we can use.
So long Brenda and Jarvis…your days in Wizards jerseys are numbered!

ed soysizzle, I truly admire your optimism, but now it is getting a bit crazy. I would have given us a chance only missing 1/3 of the big three. Now were are missing 2/3 of the big three.
It is time to join the rest of us and admit the season is over. I truly do not want the Wiz to play another game. I am terrified at what might happen next.
I am very optimistic for the future, but not this season.

sorry antwan jamisuck and ed soysizzle but come on and be real, antonio and etan suck. they will NEVER play team ball like nash and amare. both antonio and etan have ONE good game every two months or so. etan had his LAST good game of the season (which brings him to probably two good games for this season) against the bobcats in charlotte and antonio had his LAST good game of the season (which brings him to probably five good games for this season) against the bobcats in washington. neither of them are impressive on a nightly basis.

Andrew – my question was when you said the season is over, did you thought the Wizards were going to the finals or the playoffs? I’m confused when people say the season is over and not explain what they mean by that comment. Some have overvalued the Wizards and that’s why they now say the season is over.
I didn’t have that high of expectations for the Wizards to start with so the first round of playoffs is realistic to me even without Butler and Arenas. Originally it looked like 6th place but the team could fall as far down as 8th place, which is still playoffs.
I don’t understand how you can fall in love with this team after December and give up on them with 8 games to go. No matter how realistic you feel about the current situation, you have to question how true of a fan you really are when adversity like injuries strike at the bad time. The team and coaching staff don’t appear to be giving up so why should the fans?
Looking forward to next year is never the best answer anyways. The players that got hurt this year could get hurt again next year. Que Sera Sera. That’s my motto for the remaining 06-07 season.
Que Sera Sera.

Thank you Larry. Its funny how everyone will turn on their team. Are sports EVER ‘realistic’? Dont improbable things happen more often than not? I wouldnt say it would have been ‘realistic’ to think Mo Pete would hit that shot against us. Actually, it was pretty UNreal.
And now everyone just throws in the towel? Didn’t anyone ever tell you that quiting isnt the answer? It’s called persistence. These are grown men, they won’t just back down from this challenge.
Agentzero – so now AD and Etan suck? Are you kidding? 17 assits to 1 turnover…geez that sucks. And Etan, two straight double double games. Everything written on this site never ceases to amaze me. You dont want to see the Wizards play another game? Then don’t watch a game the rest of the season. I bet you will though.
I wont throw in the towel, or wave my white flag. We still have 8 games to play and we still have the playoffs. Heres to the true fans.
P.s. Was it realistic to think that the Red Sox would come back from 0-3 down to win 4-3 against the Yankees? How bout VCU beating Duke in the first round. No. It’s sports. Anything can happen.
Comment from Andrew
Time April 5, 2007 at 2:02 PM
Larry and Edsoysizzle…I always have high expectations for the Wizards each season, at least lately. I still think they have a good core with Gil, Caron and AJ. I think they have some good pieces around those guys as well. If Gil and Caron were healthy, I think the Eastern Conference Finals are well within reach. However, with two of our best players, the prospects are just not that rosie.
You are telling everyone to not give up hope, and I would argue that nobody really is. It just seems it is a case of realism and dreaming on this board. I hope they do well in the first road and make it to the second, but that is not looking good right now.
I really wish Andray was back, because he would be getting some mad minutes over the next 10-15 games. The playoff experience he will get will be invaluable for the future. We are also going to get a good look at Etan Thomas. I believe the Wiz will lean on him and get him about 30 minutes a night from this point on. That will let us all know where he stands for the future. (I think I feel he has more potential than someon this board.)
There are some good things that will come out of these final games, but we will have to wait until next year for our championship run.
There, is that enough optimism for you? My optimism is just directed in different ways now.

brickjp- you have some nice and reasonable points there. ok i’ll agree with you AD and etan have done well in the past two games but those games were against the BOBCATS! plus it has only been two games they have done well. if they can both continue to do this for the final games of the regular season and into the first round of the playoffs, then maybe i wont be so harsh on them and they wont actually suck. i dont want to see another game because 1) every game the wizards have comes down to the last shot and recently the wizards have lost all of those games. example: Mo Pete’s unreal shot cuz stupid michael ruffin throws the ball up into the air 2) another wizard may get hurt. another thing, these grown men back down from the challenge cuz they play ZERO defense!

AgentZero – did you type that you don’t want to see another Wizards game because 2) another Wizard can get hurt? Are you serious? Did I read that wrong?
On your point 1) – how many times do you think Mo Pete can make the shot he did if Ruffin did his ball toss another 100 times? I say zero. That shot was pure luck. Although sports is unpredictable as brickjp said, I don’t think Mo Pete can reproduce that shot ever again given the circumstances.

Believe me I AM. i wuz just saying what is probably going to happen to the wizards down the stretch and into the playoffs. i have hope but there is just not a lot of it left cuz of all the losses and injuries the wizards are getting. i still want them to make it to the NBA finals and win it, but the chance of that happening right now is just so small. maybe i’ll believe in the wizards again like you guys if they can pick up some wins in the final games of the regular season. that will give me a lot of hope.
Comment from Brickjp
Time April 5, 2007 at 2:32 PM
Yeah, that shot was literally 1 in a million. I don’t doubt that for a second. And yea, it is hard to watch them like this. But true fans arent ones who are all about the Wizards in December when they are hot, then dog them during the hard times. Those are bandwagon fans. True fans of any team will always have to go through the hard times. If they are true fans, they will still be there when the team succeeds. People who are bandwagon fans trash the team and its players when they are going through a rought stretch. Don’t be a bandwagon fan.
On another note, everyone keeps saying that we lost two in a row to the awful BOBCATS! Yes, they are the Charlotte Bobcats, but I don’t let reputation or overall record determine how good a team is. That team is playing well right now. Walter Hermann has gotten extended minutes recnently and this guy has proved that he can play. He is definately in a groove.
Gerald Wallace is an awesome basketball player. When hes hitting that 18 foot jumper, hes almost impossible to guard.
Who else? Raymond Felton has amazed even me with his shooting touch. He also knows how to run the team and dish the ball.
Okafor, a substantial presence in the post and a feared shot blocker.
Adam Morrison we know can play, and hes developing in the NBA for sure.
So yeah, it was to the Bobcats but this is the NBA. Any team can beat any other team on any given night. And for us to be without Caron and Gilbert all of last night, I’d say we played some pretty good ball. We just had some lapses on the defensive end.

larry- you read right and yes Mo Pete’s shot was pure luck but tell me who won that game? oh yes the raptors. why? cuz ruffin threw the ball up into the air and Mo Pete got the ball and made the three to tie it. not focusing and making costly mistakes in crunch time is why the wizards have not been winning lately and that was a crucial game the wizards should have won to achieve third place in the eastern conference

lol wiz4life. I’m a tell you my point for next games. I think AD was waiting for his chance all season long to prove that he’s still an awesome player, and Etan want to show everyone that he ain’t the bad guy who got into a fight with Haywood (whose attitude really disapoint me) and that’s why he comes out that way. The only problem is that on the floor a team is made of 5 guys. Stevenson can have huge nights (what about yesterday’s two 3 pointers in a row) and Jarvis can make the play, Songaila too, but the major problem with the wiz is that the players never get together to have a huge team game and entering the playoffs we have to turn to the next level, the whole team has to do it. We have a good bench which need to get confident and I assume that we can get trough the first round without my men Gil and Tuff Juice. We have to get together guys. By the way this is probably the worst week of the season for DC people, and for me, I had a rough day thinking of my Wiz but we ain’t on our knees, we’re up and about to show it.

mehdi- they could have won in overtime but they didnt. the game should never have gone to overtime in the first place. everyone, the wizards, the raptors, and the fans knew the wizards should have won that game. when a team in this case the wizards were winning with like 2 seconds to go and the other team, the raptors has to throw a hail mary up court, who do you think should win the game? the wizards should. then you intercept the hail mary. now you know the wizards will win. wrong. ruffin commits a dumb mistake which allows the raptors to have another chance and helps them win the game. you just cannot make mistakes like that with less than 1 second left and blow an important game that your team needs and should win.

The entire team has lived off of the Big Three all season it’s going to be really tough to change gears. wizardsdotcom,
Thanks for pointing out the name. Yeah, I meant Juan Carlos Navarro. I know he has a expensive contract buyout situation. But didn’t NBA has a rule on the maximum a team is allowed to pay for the buyout? So why would Wizards need (or allowed) to pay more than the NBA maximum?
Can you explain that (also my previous question on if a team can bring someone from abroad in at this time)? Thanks!

Sad, sad, sad … this has been such a fun team to watch — although a very frustrating one in the months of November, February, March, and now the cruelest month of all April. Ahh, but those two months in December and January … absolutely worth the price of admission. I had more fun this NBA regular season than in a long time (thanks also to the Wizards blogs, especially this one). As an olllld Wizards/Bullets fan (I had a 10 game package back at the Capitol Centre waaay back in the 1980s and 90s) — I’ve seen and cheered for a lot of bad, bad, bad basketball teams. That has all changed since we got Gilbert. So, to see him go down is just sad. But, on the bright side, the team has a real future, this is not at all a career threatening injury, and Ernie G will have another summer to try to make the team better. I’ll root them on for the rest of the year no matter what (and to be honest, the losses will be a lot less wrenching now since they are so out-manned), and wait confidently for next year.

I think contracts can still be signed but I don’t think players added this late are eligible for the playoffs.
Also, and more importantly, since the team is already at 15 players, someone would have to be waived.

He didn’t play Brenda because he doesn’t deserve to play. He’s a bum that destroys team chemistry. He could be a great player (as evident during our great run in December – it wasn’t just Gil that made us so good then), but would rather create drama and be lazy.

Trade Brenden Haywood to Lakers for Kwame Brown. Kwame can do everything Brenden can (pout, cry, sit on the bench, have hands of stone) and steal cakes.

Brendan sucks. like i said in an earlier blog we need to pick up a good center in the draft or sign onein the free agent market. or maybe that Oleksiy Pecherov guy will finally play out his contract in France or wherever he plays right now, and become a wizard.

I’m here as a witness for the Mason official contest (I’m pretty sure he’ll hear about it). Anyway I simple don’t understand how you can bet one of your gil’s jerseys, I ow 4 of them, and you’d have to kill me to get one. You’ll probably say that you’re sure Roger won’t make it, but he ain’t no Kwame Brown lol.

I definitly think Mr. Haywood will be waived, did you notice that he didn’t seat with the rest of the team on the regular bench the other night… What a shame…

The Wizards should seriously think about getting Kevin Garnett or Jermaine O’Neal and losing Antawn Jamison and any bench guy except Andray Blatche.

The odds are in my favor for Roger Mason not scoring 25 points on Friday against Cleveland. Don’t worry Mehdi, my jerseys are safe with me. I don’t make bets that I won’t win.
Larry Hughes is guarding Mason at the Point Guard position. I’m confident Larry won’t let Roger score 25. Actually very confident that won’t happen.

Mason only shoots threes. He’ll need 9 threes to get over 25 points. That won’t happen. I feel confident.

There has to be something going on with Brendan and Jordan. He didn’t play him Sunday either. I know Brendan isn’t consisent but your going to need him down the stretch. Reminds me of Kwame’s last days here. I am sad, I have to admit I like Brenden!
The Stevenson shirts were definately full T-shirts. The fans were also really cool. The hand shook in front of the face imititating the move Stevenson does after he makes a shot. It was his birthday last night!

Hey Eric,
Can you let Roger know about this between me and anonymous? Let him know I NEED a career night from him to win this bet!!
PS. Let Eddie Jordan know too so that he’ll play Roger like 35 minutes.
Thanks

You turn the jersey inside out and wash only in cold water with the washing machine. You don’t need to handwash them! This isn’t the 1800’s.

No no I have no confidence in it, if it kills one of my t-shirts okay, but not my Arenas’ jerseys which are usually on my shoolders or hanging in the air, in my room so that everybody see them…

I have to disagree with the tshirt comment Mehdi. Those Agent Zero shirts (Adidas black and white) are very rare and you couldn’t buy those at any store. They are more valuable to me than his jerseys.

Wash it inside out.
Wash it in cold water only.
Don’t use the dryer. Air dry it and the jersey will be in perfect condition.
I spilled pizza sauce on it once and used a clorox bleach stick. Those work too and won’t damage the jersey.

Well I actually didn’t comment on the t-shirts. But I’m totally agreeing with you, they’re rare, quiet more than Gil’s jersey. I was actually expecting “Hibachi” T-shirts with “don’t watch me watch TV” written on to be given out at the Verizon center, but with the way the season is going right now I don’t know what to think…

Etan and Daniels do not “suck”. Both are very good at their positions, when their production per minute played is compared with others. I love seeing Daniels run the offense. Always have. I worry about Etan starting, as he tends to get hurt, and might be more susceptible if tired. Booth is a good man to have as the third center.
From the website on Juan Carlos Navarro:
One of the top guard prospects in Europe. He currently uses his explosive quickness more to create shots for himself than others but is maturing in this respect. FG% 45, FT% 86 26 yrs old
wizardsdotcom do you know how much Navarro would have to pay to get out of his contract? I couldn’t find it. I know the Wizards are only permitted to pay $500,000 of the total.
Pecherov will come next year, presumably being behind Jamison and Songaila on the PF depth chart. Unfortunately, he’s not known for defense.
The Wiz will not mail it in – they’ll play as well as they can the rest of the way. I just don’t think they are used to good defense and now won’t be able to outscore the enemy. It will be interesting to see how well some of the reserves play, however. I, for one, will be watching.

Hi I am sorry and feel for Arenas, he is a excellent player and a star. however i don’t feel bad for the Washington Wizards as an organization. I hope they never win a championship for what they did to MJ. Ithink Arenas will do will in a nother leave like the Bulls or even Toronto.

Some random thoughts…
This team has terrible Kharma at home games – from that dead duck of shot that Vince Carter made back in November to the rash of injuries to Jamison, Butler, Blatche and now Arenas.
Did you know that “arenas” is the spanish word for “sands” – Gilbert Sands just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
That guy Herrman on the Bobcats reminds me of Fabio.
The bad Kharma will turn around next year. Jamison and Arenas and Songaila should PLEASE stay out of international b-ball this summer. Just rest up for the season ahead.
The next few games will be big for the Wizard reserves, particularly Hayes. It’s time to see if he is a legit NBA player. This stretch of games could be make or break for him. Either way, he is one cool looking dude!
I don’t think we’ll see much of Haywood from here on out. It looks like he’ll be sent packing where he will be a marginal player where ever he lands.
Quite frankly, with all the times Gilbert hits the deck each game, I’m suprised he has been as durable as he has been.
It will be fun to see Blatche get some licks in the playoffs.
It’s too bad the way things have turned out because I really think the Wiz are better this year then last. Stephenson is an upgrade over Jeffries, Songaila and Blatche make for a stronger bench. If they could have stayed healthy, I think they were a 50+ win team. But the same could be said of a few other teams as well. You need some luck along the way.
There are a lot of reasons to be optimistic for next year (see above). Maybe that Russian kid they drafted last year can play center.

agentzero,
This is in response to your post in the old board which is not moved over.
I think with Arena and Butler out, and Hayes has not shot consistently, Wizards need more help in perimeter players than the big men. Once Blatche comes back, they will be full strength for their big men. Blatche can play some at SF, but he does not have consistent outside shots either.
Regarding Brendan, I am aware of the fight between him and Etan where the management had determined that was mainly Etan’s fault and suspended Etan for it. Is there any new fight?

I am waiving my white flag. Can the Wiz just opt to not play anymore? I am all for forfeiting the rest of the season and the first round of the playoffs. The next thing we know AJ will get injured for the rest of this year and next.
This FREAKING SUCKS!!!! What crappy luck…this season is OV-AHH!!
AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
