ERNIE TALKS ABOUT CB’S INJURY

More on Caron
Caron Butler has sustained a second metacarpal fracture in his right hand and will miss six weeks.

“I banged my right hand on the backboard, and I immediately felt a great deal of pain,” Butler said. “I am really disappointed because we finally had everyone back from injuries for the playoff run. I am going to stay positive and continue to support my teammates, and hope to get back as soon as possible.”

“Caron has had an outstanding season,” Grunfeld said. “We will miss his production and leadership on the court. We expect him to make a full recovery, and we will look for his teammates to step up in his absence.”

UPDATE: Just got word that Jarvis Hayes will start tomorrow in Caron’s place. You heard it here first, folks…

Wow six weeks, and I guess it’s at least…. Well we’ll get him back during the playoffs, when we’ll need him the most … Get better Tuff Juice!

  2. Ed soysizzle Says:

man we our big three is like cursed this year. first twan. then Caron. and then caron again. the wizards gotta make second round so caron can step in and help us advance even farther.

  3. Andrew Says:

Jarvis has largely been a disappointment this year. If he wants to stay in DC, he better STEP IT UP!!!

If we get to the playoffs and get ousted in the first round and his numbers are bad, he might as well waive bye-bye to Verizon. He has got to bring it and prove he is worth a new contract. This is the perfect time. I kind of expect good things from Darius, but Jarvis a big “?” at this point. I think our fate ultimately rests on his shoulders.

  4. Neal Says:

I think Hayes will really have to shine to justify the $3.5 million option we have on him for next year. On the other hand, he’s probably worth more to us than anyone else. I think if we can get him back for the minimum, he’s worth it. He still hasn’t played a lot in the league. He may yet get his shooting touch. He seems to do other things well.

Yes, Andrew, I think our fate may well be attached to Jarvis.

Anyone know when Blatche is expected back?

  5. Wizards4life Says:

i don’t know guys i think he is capable of doing what needs to be done along with Darius that should get most of the slack off of Gil and Twan and if AB can get back quick we should be able to make this push and keep the play off going till Caron can make it back or at least i hope we can

  6. Christopher Says:

Does anybody know yet where that puts CB’s return? How far in the playoffs will the Wizards have to make it without him? Is there a generic playoff schedule that we could look at to find out?

  7. wizardsdotcom Says:

Christopher - your best bet would be to compare it with last year’s playoff schedule. A lot of it depends on how many games team have to play for the next round to start.

My guess is that if the Wizards were to advance into round 2 (which could go into the second week of May), there’s a chance Caron could play, but that’s just a guess based on the six week prognosis and how playoff schedules worked in previous years.

  8. Mehdi Says:

Could one of you guys hand me a last year playoffs schedule please, I’ll be in Dublin for the first week of the playoffs (I know that’s the last place to be at but school is school, I don’t have the choice :-( ) so if I could try to guess a little it would be great. If I’m not mistaking the playoffs start on saturday, a team can’t get into back-to-back during the playoffs (I’m not sure about that one) so it might mean that the fourth game of the first round would at worst be on Friday, when I come back :D .

  9. Christopher Says:

Actually, I think it is quite possible that the Wizards can make it to the second round without Caron. If the Wizards can hold on to the division, they would most likely be the fourth seed and would play either Chicago or Cleveland with home-court advantage. Both Chicago and Cleveland have losing records on the road, so the home-court advantage would be huge. The important thing is that they wouldn’t have to face Miami until the Conference Finals, as Miami would probably be the sixth seed in this scenario. If they beat either Chicago or Cleveland, then they would play the winner of a likely Detroit-Orlando series. The Wizards have played well against Detroit this season.

On the flip-side, if the Wizards do let the division slip through their fingers, then they are looking straight at a first-round matchup with Miami and a healthy D-Wade to go along with Shaq. The Wizards have never beaten Miami with Shaq in the lineup and they haven’t beaten Miami with D-Wade in the lineup in over 3 years. To make things worse, Miami would obviously have the home-court advantage in this scenario. The Wizards are an abysmal 13-23 on the road this season.

  10. wizardsdotcom Says:

Actually, there’s a very good chance that should the Wizards fall to sixth, Toronto would be their first round opponent, not Miami.

  11. larry Says:

Neal - I think you known darn well that Jarvis Hayes is not worth the 3.5 million option (definitely not 1 year just so that he turns into unrestricted free agent in 2008). That’s more like Stevenson’s money range, in my opinion.

With that said, I hope Hayes play well enough to earn whatever contract that is coming his way. If he plays well, he may garner that option from the Wizards. If not, well, another team can use a 6-8 pure shooter that plays above average defense.

I think 6 weeks from now is more likely to be the Eastern Conference Finals instead of Eastern Conference Semifinals. You never know with these unpredictable Wizards. You never know.

  12. Neal Says:

I agree Larry. Trying to guess what will fit in the salary cap, I figure Stevenson will get 4 million and Hayes 1.5.

I’m not counting on Butler for any of the playoffs. If he gets back for a couple of games, that’s a bonus. But there are certainly examples of a team’s coming together upon losing a star and playing as well or better. Maybe it focuses them.

I bet we’ll play well the rest of the season. I like Jordan’s courage in starting Thomas. I think it may help team chemistry.

Little known fact: After Daniels the best assist to turnover ratio on the team belongs to ….Calvin Booth.

  13. Anonymous Says:

Not to be a downer but it is entirely possible that we do not even make the playoffs - especially since we have won only 2 (maybe 3) games without Caron.

  14. westcoastwizard Says:

We will make the play-offs … there is almost no doubt about that, especially given the Wiz’s remaining schedule and how far they are ahead of the Pacers/Knicks (more than 7 games). But, even if we win the division, we must finish in 3rd place to get homecourt advantage. If we are 4th, we’ll play either Chicago or Cleveland at the 5, both of whom will likely have better records. So, even though we will be seeded higher (again, if we place 4th by winning the division but behind Toronto), we will have a worse record, and therefor will not have home court. Strange I know, but the bottom line is that, regardless of seeding, the team with the better record has home court advantage. It works that way all the way to the Finals.

  15. WizDom Says:

Seed just decides who we play.
The team with the better record would have home court.
For example, if we were to hold on to 4th and play Chicago or Cleveland right now, they would have the home court advantage.

The chances of us NOT making the playoffs are very slim. We just need 1 win and a pacers loss.

  16. WizDom Says:

westcoastwizard beat me to it =)

  17. westcoastwizard Says:

Wizdom … great minds you know.

  18. Shon Says:

sometime I wonder Jarvis Hayes is not real Jarvis Hayes, maybe this is his twin brother. you know, it is very differcult to tell who they are (from twin brother) haha, Jarvis used to very good, but this year, very disappointed.

I told you all Wizards fans that Greg Oden is amazing. He’s dominating against Florida by himself. Oden is better than Haywood, Etan, Booth, and Ruffin combined. It’s not even close. Say it with me: Trade Caron Butler, Haywood, and Draft Picks for Oden. You guys will never cry about the center position for the next 15 years. Oden is great. Caron is injury prone.

  20. Brickjp Says:

Who is this guy and why is he claiming that he knew Oden was good? He dominated? His team lost by double digits….

  21. Anonymous Says:

^And this is NOT NBA Live…

  22. Wizards4life Says:

this is that same guy who said that we would not make the play offs that we are about to make this is the guy who said Miami would have the division by now this is the guy who wants to trade part of our core for a unproven collage kid! that about sums it up! and he has not been right yet but he wants to make a case for this kid and he is good but worth what he thinks we should trade for him and we keep tellin him if some one gets that kid no one is going to trade him

  23. Anonymous Says:

It’s what they get for those horrid golden uniforms. Jarvis needs to do something. Maybe he will wake up and play some ball now.

  24. Neal Says:

It will sink in with the Wiz that there is no white knight (or Tough Juice) coming back to save them. They will gel, win tonight, play very well the rest of the season, and win their division.

Someone tell me how Jarvis did in college. Was he known for outside shooting? Was he injury prone? Maybe Tom Mandel’s prediction will finally come true: the season hinges on Hayes.

Haywood and our 1st round pick works for me for Oden. But giving up Butler is a bad deal. I agree with wizards4life. Any draft pick is a gamble. I’ve forgotten what the deal was but we gave up someone to trade up in the draft to get Haywood, who has played up to his potential about two games per season.

  25. Anonymous Says:

    1. Trade Caron Butler, draft rights to JC Navarro, Haywood, second round pick, and cash for Greg Oden. This trade is really Butler and draft picks for Oden because the other pieces are trash.

    2. Wizards getting swept in the first round of the playoffs is the same as not making the playoffs. Waste of money for people to attend Games 3 and 4.

    3. BrickJP look at the stats. 10 for 15 from the field (25 points), 12 rebounds, and 4 blocks for Oden in the national championship against Florida is NOT dominating? Are you ignorant? Florida isn’t the a chump school. Their starting 5 are all NBA ready.

    4. Wizards4life in case you didn’t watch sportscenter, Wade is back. He was dribbling with his left hand and shooting. Miami got their best player back and the Wizards lost the heart of the team. It’s going to be Miami for the southeast division. Kobe, KG, LeBron were all unproven kids and they better than anything the Wizards have. Your point on Oden being unproven in college is meaningless. Kevin Durant can fail in the NBA as fast as Oden rises to the crop.

    5. No sensible Wizards fan will say that Oden is worst than Haywood, Etan, Booth, and Ruffin.

  26. Wizards4life Says:

lol yeah but if we get sweep we still made it you said we would not make it at all so there for you were wrong and yeah it is founded name all the other guys that did grate things in collage like K.Brown and a bunch of others that you will never hear about because they could not play on the NBA level like they could collage and not only that most take years to grow into roles on the team Kobe was no over night star and lebron don’t have a ring and neither dose KG so since when are they grate shoe deals don’t make you grate. and even Kobe needed Shaq

  27. Anonymous Says:

Wizards4life I don’t understand what you said so I can’t even reply to it.

  28. Christopher Says:

    westcoastwizard and wizdom:

I stand corrected. I didn’t realize that seeding didn’t matter for home-court advantage. I don’t know why I never realized this before.

    WizardsDotCom:

Again, I stand corrected. Although I should point out that the Raptors have a very tough remaining schedule and they play 5 out of their remaining 9 games on the road. The Heat, on the other hand, are about to get D-Wade back and will probably go on a tear. So it looks to me like the Wizards may end up playing Miami either way. A lot will depend on who wins the Heat-Raptors game tonight.

  29. Brickjp Says:

Sorry anonymous, but the way I see it, you can’t ‘dominate’ a game and lose it. He had impressive stats yes, but that doesnt equal dominating. Wasn’t his team down by double digits pretty much the whole second half? Are you ignorant? What kind of domination is that. Ha.

  30. Anonymous Says:

BrickJP isn’t it true that Gilbert Arenas can dominate a game with good individual stats and still the Wizards lose? What’s your response to that? Do you need me to find examples?

  31. Anonymous Says:

This stinks we need Caron Gilbert and Antwan to get to the championship.Im sorry were done.
