WIZARDS POST-PRACTICE SOUND

Monday, January 29th, 2007

Following the Wizards weekend sweep of Detroit and Boston, the team held practice Monday at Verizon Center. Here’s some of what Eddie Jordan, Antawn Jamison, and Caron Butler had to say.

Gilbert Arenas did not attend practice - the three-time all-star guard had to pay a visit to the dentist to deal with a chipped tooth suffered late in the game Sunday in Boston.

WIZARDS DEFEAT CELTICS, MAINTAIN LEAD IN THE EAST

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

Using a fourth quarter run to put the game away, the Wizards beat the Celtics 105-91 Sunday night in Boston. Antawn Jamison poured in 34 points, his second straight game scoring 30 or more points, to lead the Wizards. Gilbert Arenas added 23 points, while Caron Butler bounced back from Friday night’s nine-point game in Detroit to score 21 and grab 11 boards.

Up 80-76 at the nine minute mark, the Wizards used a 21-4 run to go up 21 points late in the game.

“He was 34 and 35 for back-to-back nights for our captain,” said Eddie Jordan. “He was really big. Antawn understands what we are. He understand that these are the type of games, he and Antonio (Daniels), and Gilbert (Arenas), but they verbalize it, Antwan and Antonio. They verbalize it to our team the fact that we have to win games, we have to concentrate. We can’t take a back seat on concentration and effort. These are the types of games we have to win to establish ourselves as one of the contenders of the East.”

The win ensured the Wizards will enter the week as the East’s top team. Washington, who has now won three straight games on the road, host the Pistons Tuesday night at Verizon Center.

WIZARDS USE “D” TO GET WIN IN DETROIT

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

Tayshaun’s quote sums it up best: “Washington figured out what we were going to do on that last play.”

Instead of relying on Gilbert Arenas’ offense to get them a last second win, the Wizards clamped down on defense in the final seconds to hold on and claim a five point win in Detroit.

“If you want to put a cliché on it, it was a heavyweight fight,” said head coach Eddie Jordan. “I told my guys that we took a heck of a Joe Frazier left hook and I don’t know if 80 percent know who Frazier is. But we withstood it, maintained our poise, some guys didn’t play in the second half and our starters really carried the load, but we’re all in this together and it was a good victory against a champion.”

Thanks to the win, there’s no sharing for now - Washington currently has sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference. Go spread the word.

Wizards complete this two-game trip Sunday in Boston.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: WIZARDS AT PISTONS

Friday, January 26th, 2007

The Washington Wizards visit the Detroit Pistons tonight at The Palace of Auburn Hills on Comcast SportsNet, ESPN and WTEM 980 at 7:00 pm.

“I always look at them as a champion,” said Head Coach Eddie Jordan. “We played probably a future champion (Phoenix Suns)…a team that could go down in history as one of the greatest if they continue to play this way. Now we are playing an ex-champion. We have got to get ready to play; we can’t have the same performance. Usually we are ready to come back and play at a high level, but we’ll see.”

Tonight’s game marks the third of four meetings between the Wizards and Pistons this season. Last season Washington swept Detroit (3-0), handing the Pistons three of their 18 losses in the regular season, but Detroit has claimed both of the games to date this season. Also last season, the Wizards were the only team in the NBA to win twice in Detroit.
