Coach seemed pretty cool. It’s nice to see how passionate he was about the squad. What I wonder about though…How hands on do these coaches get in practices. I think about when Pat Ewing was an assistant for the rockets. Did he actually work with Yao in game situations? I ask because alot of times when you see assistants they tend to be old guys, who couldn’t possibly be hands on coaching.Maybe running drills, but how about coaches who actually demonstrate, and teach. I’m sure this goes on,but I just wonder how much coaching goes on when teams tend to have a starting 5 of asistants.

As someone who’s coached at several levels (ok - grade school & HS youth teams), and as someone who has observed coaching at the highest level (NBA), coaching requires little physical demonstration, especially one-on-one. Teaching and instruction is so much more important.

For many teams, each coach has his own “specialty”. There’s often a lead assistant who helps the head coach out with everything (in our case Mike O’Koren). Some coaches have coaches just for the “smalls”, others for just the “bigs”, others for just defense, and some are in charge of developing the younger players.

A few years back, Dallas had like 10 assistants at one point. I think LA brought 8 “coaches” to camp last year.
