Washington Post: Wizards Undecided on Pecherov
The Post’s Ivan Carter is reporting in Saturday’s edition that the Wizards “have yet to decide where first-round pick Oleksiy Pecherov will play this season.”
Pecherov, who is under contract to BC Kiev of the Ukrainian Superleague, has the option of buying out the remaining year of his contract for $800,000. Under NBA rules, the Wizards can only pay up to $500,000 of the buyout.
According to Carter, “The problem, sources say, is that the quality of play in the Ukrainian Superleague is not on par with other top European leagues, so the Wizards might decide that Pecherov would be better off in Washington even if he’s not a part of Coach Eddie Jordan’s regular playing rotation.”
Pecherov has stated since Draft Night that he will do whatever the team wishes. That said, do you think the team should buy out the remaining season of his contract and spend this upcoming season in Washington? Or will another year in a European League serve him better if he doesn’t make Coach Jordan’s regular rotation?

Kevin - I think that’s on the money. If Pecherov can have a major role on a competitive team/league, great. If not, he’ll be better off over here absorbing stuff, playing in practice and the D League, and pushing himself to earn minutes. I wouldn’t be surprised if he improves quickly. I like this kid.

I am a Chinese basketball fans.
I think Pecherov should still stay in France to develop himself and there are enough PF in the team. For example,we have Antawn Jamison,Darius Songaila,Michael Ruffin and Andray Blatche, that’s enough for the team.

I dont think that sending him back to france is a good idea.Lets keep him here let him go to the D-league and learn the offence in practice also maybe let him get a feel of the game when we are punishing a team and are bound to win that game.

Kevin & Tom you guys have the pulse of whats happening but Mr Anonymous from China doesn’t have a clue. The injury bug could hit at any time so the wizards need that flexibility to change lineups with multi-positioned players at any time. I feel Pecherov can play the 3,4,5 positions and thats a real asset. My decision is to bring him over here and develop whether it’s practicing with seasoned professionals or getting minutes in the developmental league.
Ernie has found some gold from the European pool of players once again.
Lets Go Wizards!!!

aundra2044 you hit the nail on the head…..with the NBA favoring a more offensive and uptempo game this guy could gain much knowledge from running with the D-league.The versitility of playing 2-3 positions is something EJ uses to his advantage. This year I think we will see just how good this wizard squad is, and how well EJ responds with talented starters and a deep bench.

I just have this sneaking suspicion that Pecherov could improve quickly playing in the league. What makes me think so? I have no idea, really - maybe it’s just wishful thinking.
At the same time, there’s really nothing for him to learn in the D league.

I think Pecherov impressed in summer leagues and he is ready sooner than Wizards expected. I think Calvin Booth or Ramos is expendable. Ramos seems to play better in international play than for Wizards. He has yet to prove himself…..This training camp may be his last chance.
I see ten folks interchangeable and getting lots of playing time……
Arenas
Blatche
Butler
Daniels
Hayes
Haywood
Jamison
Songaila
Stevenson
E. Thomas
Players battling for minutes and to stay on roster.
Booth
Taylor
Pecherov
Ruffin
B. Thomas
Storey
Ramos
My guess is Taylor, Pecherov, Ruffin, B. Thomas make the roster.
Veremeenko should stay overseas next year.

If Pech is not going to play in France (better competition and tutalidge versus the Ukraine if he stays in Europe) then Ernie should bring him to DC to monitor his development both under Eddie and in the NBDL. I listened to an AOL interview with Pech and he sounded very mature for his age. Left the impression he is smart, willing and wanting to learn and develop, and will pick things up quickly. He and Blatch can push each other in practices. If he can play in the French league with better competition and coaching, then he could develop with the addtional minutes he’ll get there. Otherwise bring him over now. He sounds like a keeper. Hope he pans out. I liked Jared but understand the decision to let him go. Sorry to hear his agent make the remarks he did. Although I liked Jared, I agree with Ernie, we want players who want to be here. Who want to be part of a good thing that’s going to get better. I think Oleksiy Pecherov (Pech) wants to be here. I think he recognizes, and appreciates, the situation and opportunity to be part of the Wizard organization at this time. 1st choice; France. 2nd choice; Wizards 2006/07. 3rd choice; don’t let him play in the Ukraine. Go Wiz!
