Around The Net: Jared Jeffries to the Knicks? Bo…
Around The Net:
Jared Jeffries to the Knicks? Both the Washington Post and New York Times are reporting that the 6-11 swingman has signed an offer sheet worth the Knicks’ mid-level exception.
“We have not received an offer and if or when we do, we will have a week to explore all of our options to determine our course of action,” Wizards President of Basketball Ops Ernie Grunfeld said in a statement printed in the Post.
So…IF Jeffries did indeed sign an offer sheet with New York (valued at a reported $30M over 5 years), the question for you fans is simple: Should Washington match? However, before your post your comment, make sure to read his agent’s thoughts which were printed in the Times…
(Note: I’ll be having trouble receiving e-mail notifications remotely this weekend, but I’ll be logging on periodically. So if there’s a delay in getting comments posted, I apologize in advance.)

THANK YOU THANK YOU. please get rid of jeffries. dude is never there on offense and his defense is spotty at times. id rather start someone else at power forward such as andray or songaila and have butler and jamison move down a spot. I definitely think we do not need jared.

i think the wizards should drop jj. if he dose not want to be here then he needs to go. but if i were the wizards i would use him for bait on a nice sign & trade for a good bench player because remember Hayes is coming back if he stays in there he can take over jj’s spot or you can move twan over to SF and put songaila at PF and use Hayes off the bench.
but if i may say so my self jj was made by jordan and will drop off any where he lands and i think it shows major disrespect to the fans and the wizards as a team to run wile the rest of the team hold thair ground and trys to inprove

I think that the Wizards should match the Knicks’ offer. Why keep letting people go? Build on the team that you have and go from there. We have been going to the playoff’s lately, and we need to continue to go and actually win. Keep Jefferies..He has really improved as a player.

If Jared has been brainwashed by Isiah into thinking New York has a chance of being a winner then go ahead into martyrdom and feel the pain of losing.
I want to hear from the man himself not from his agent because I for one always seen potential in Jareds game from the start when people said I was crazy.Lets hear from Jared then I will believe it was his thinking not Isaih and his agent doing all the talking!!
I personally would like for you to stay and feel the winning ways and not startout being into a losing situation! Good Luck

I think the Wizards should let JJ go. His defensive prowess is all hype. Sure,he guards all positions, but he’s probably never gonna actually bang with people in his own position.I always took him as soft.Plus he gives little offensive punch. Some say that letting Jeffries go would become part of a trend that the Wizards have established of letting people leave, and not building with what they have. But,the trend that the wizards need to be conscious of is the one of holding onto to soft big men who play smaller than their size.At least Andray has a point to prove. The wizards need more grit anyway. See ya. JJ
July 29th, 2006 at 12:48 PM
I really don’t want to see Jared leave the Wizards. But he has to do what is right for him and if he goes to the Knicks I will still be his number one fan.
July 29th, 2006 at 2:13 PM
jeffries is going into his 5th season i think he will be a solid player for 21 min a game not much more , i think the wiz will match the knicks offer it is less then the wiz first offered . then trade him if he doesnt want to play here
retrogary

I’m stuck in an awkward position here w/ the Jeffries situation. Personally, I love Jared, and how he plays the game. I used to rock my Jared jersey to alot of the games, and people would ask, “Why you got Jeffries jersey on?” LOL, but this is one of those you can’t let personal feelings interefere w/ business. $30M over 5 years??? That’s steep for Jared. I read that Jared turned down a better offer from the Wiz earlier on in the summer, and that kind of leaves a sour taste in my mouth though. I agree w/ trying to keep the players we’ve had over the last two years together and keep building, but if Jared dosen’t wanna be a Wizard, then let him go to NY. I can’t wait to see what happens this week though.

I am a Wizard season ticket holder and agree that its time for JJ to move on. You don’t know how many times he fumbles a fast break pass for a turnover. Defense is ok but not necessarily great. Did he hold L. James to points below his average? No
July 29th, 2006 at 6:41 PM
Wow!! this is a tough one. While I like what JJ adds to defense. I don’t like that he can’t finish at the rim. He missed to many layups and shots under the basket. However, I read that he turned down a better offer from the wiz, that leads me he may wants to go. If that the case then so be it..But I personally think that it’s his attorney doing all of the talking. I think he only signed so that the wiz can match it..

Jeffries wouldn’t be much good for this team because he’s been ready to move on. I could tell by his demeanor and some interviews that he was ready to leave DC. I never thought he was good enough to start so I’m not sad to see him go. Oh, wait a minute, he was good enough to start for the Wizards but for another team I saw him coming off the bench. I definitely want to see this team go in another direction.. Its time to build into a championship team so its time to trash the charmins and bring in more tough juices!!
July 29th, 2006 at 10:12 PM
jeffries has improved every year he has been in the league. at 6 11, you’d bve hard-pressed to find another player as versatile in any of the three stages of the game. if we lose jj the team would be taking a step back. blatch is not ready to play and songaila has yet to put on a jersey. keep the man, he’s an asset
July 29th, 2006 at 11:03 PM
I just gota say the even though they did good this year, its not enough! They better do greater than last year! I hope these new european cats on the team really help and get the wizards to the NBA semi finals at least!
July 29th, 2006 at 11:10 PM
I know some might say immediately, “Don’t let another player get pulled from our roster by another team, like Hughes.” Here’s the deal, unlike Hughes, Jeffries really has no impact on the team. Will we miss his offense? Nope, he doesn’t have any. Will we miss his game IQ? Nope, he doesn’t have any. Will we miss his defense? Well, his defense isn’t spectacular. It’s at best, mediocre. It only looks good because no one else on the team plays defense. It’s like saying Mini Me is tallest player and that the team should keep him, but that team is made up of people half his size. Frankly, we can do better. Plus it’ll be nice to give some other players some playing time. It’s how Diaw and many other players’ positive sides were exposed, and they lost Joe Johnson for him, and he was the Suns big D.
July 30th, 2006 at 12:52 AM
yea if jared doesnt wanna be here then he can leave. but i think the wizards should have a sign and trade.
July 30th, 2006 at 1:17 AM
jj can not play offense, he can not finish, and his defense is not worth 33 million dollars. i say we get Andray in the line-up to replace him. go out and get stevenson who can actually shoot the ball and then we well have money left over to sign a defensive minded assitant coach
July 30th, 2006 at 3:44 AM
I think JJ is the best defender on one of worst defensive teams in the NBA. Don’t get me wrong, but statisticlly that isnt our strong point. Taking that into account, Letting JJ go and moving Songalia into his place may be a better move. If so, we could throw Twan into the 3 spot and become more intimidating on D w/o sacrificing offense. Also, it would be nice to get Blatche more PT. I think he could really improve and be a threat at his position. Letting JJ go would give more PT to him. Blatche and Songalia both are more of a threat on O as well…

I for one think that the Wizards should retain Jeffries. I am not certain that he really wants to leave and that all of the talk of him wanting to play for Isaiah is from his agent. I saw him on Sportsnet and he said he wanted to stay with the Wizards for awhile. I think that maybe the Wizards offer was not for five years and that is were the problem lay. I believe Jeffries wanted a longer term contract than what the Wizards offered. I for one hope they match the Knicks offer. Like with Hughes and the Cavaliers, I think signing with New York will a big mistake for Jeffries. Hughes left and his impact with Cleveland was not like it was here in DC and from some of the interviews I have seen with Larry, I bet he wished he had stayed. DON’T GO JARED, STAY!
July 30th, 2006 at 9:42 AM
It looks as though the Wizards are in a position where a) they’re not good enough to get over the hump and b) don’t have salary flexibility to make significant changes.
They do, however, have one thing going for them. They have something Isiah Thomas wants.
Jared Jeffries.
And Toronto fans saw last season with the Jalen Rose-Antonio Davis trade, Thomas acts on instinct and impulse.
So why not see if he’ll stay true to form and help the Wizards out too?
Washington has committed long-term to players who’ll probably not improve. Like Etan Thomas & Brendan Haywood.
Any sign-and-trade for Jeffries to the Knicks must include these two in return for Jalen Rose, as well as Eddy Curry to replace the departing bigs. Include Caron Butler to sweeten the deal and match the contracts.
Thomas must deliver now, and Haywood, Thomas, Jeffries, and Butler would (on the surface) seem impressive.
The reality is that:
a) Rose’s & Curry’s contracts will expire (Curry may be a keeper).
b) The Wizards don’t take a step back in quality.
c) They do free up significant flexibility by shedding $36 million future salary starting next year when a solid crop of free agents become available.
This may be ther opportunity for the Wizards to position themselves to really move forward.
Otherwise their prospects aren’t any brighter than last year. Is that what they want?
July 30th, 2006 at 11:18 AM
In response to Tony Irwin, I hear you but there is no way I would let go of Carron Butler. Haywood, Etan and maybe even Hayes. But Caron, no way!
July 30th, 2006 at 1:00 PM
I just read in today’s article that Jared does not want the wizards to match offers with the knicks, he just rather go on to the Knicks. I find that a wonderful opportunity for Jared to grow and become well known in the leauge. He wants to move on and accomplish new and brighter things with another team and I find that very cool. He is a good player with a lot of confidence and I believe he will go far in life and in the Nba.
July 30th, 2006 at 1:23 PM
Don’t get rid of jeffries are you kidding me we will be screwed when Kobe and the Lebrons come to town cause we will have no one to guard them you all saw what Lebron did to us in the playoffs the only person that really bothered Lebron was Jeffries we have to match the offer weither Jeffries wants to stay in Washington or not.
July 30th, 2006 at 2:44 PM
There’s no reason for Ernie Grunfeld to put the Wizards close to the luxury tax. Jared Jeffries isn’t all that anyway, he’s a defensive minded player, which we can find easily, and he’s got no offense. If Jared Jeffries doesn’t want to play in Washington, then this is Ernie’s easiest chance to get rid of him. You don’t want him to act up during the season and cause a distraction for the team. Plus, knowing Ernie Grunfeld, he WILL counter attack like he’s done last year after losing Larry Hughes. Bringing in a guy like Bonzi Wells will easily forget Jared’s presence.
July 30th, 2006 at 5:08 PM
DO NOT let jarred go!
That would be the worst move the wiz have made since trading rip for stackhouse!
How can you let a guy go who has the best D on your team! You saw the way he played lebron “the king” james in the playoffs. When JJ went out of thhe game lebron killed us!
we can not let him go!
If anyone let Haywood go. The man is a 7 footer and he cant get more then 5 boards a game!
July 30th, 2006 at 6:58 PM
I can’t wait to see Jared go. I think Ernie is one of the smartest GM’s in any sport. I’m sure he’ll do the right thing and let him walk, or maybe convince Isaiah to do a sign and trade. Blatche and Taylor should be enough to replace him (and who is Jarvis Hayes? Never heard of him).
July 30th, 2006 at 7:18 PM
I believe the Wizards won’t match the offer because why would they keep Jeffries here if he doesn’t want to play for the Wizards anymore? I would prefer someone on this team that loves playing for the Washington Wizards. Are there anymore players on our roster that doesn’t want to be here? If so, trade their butts!
July 30th, 2006 at 7:31 PM
I agree with you let jeffries go he dosnt want the wizards to match the offer anyway so why waste 30 mil thats way to much he dosnt do any thing at offense now will be a great time to bring in some big guys like bonzi or better yet wilcox the guy is way better than jeffries and with either one of these guys i think we would be better off with than with jared.
July 30th, 2006 at 8:10 PM
In response to “Keep JJ”
You have to recognize the situation and how hard Isiah Thomas is making this. He’s giving Jared a trade clause and 80% of his yearly salary before the season starts. Both Isiah Thomas AND Jared Jeffries are trying to convince the Wizards to let him go. Obviously it’s the best choice, and you don’t want him to act up during the season for the Wizards and cause a distraction for him. And come on, know Ernie Grunfeld, he will counter-attack.
July 30th, 2006 at 11:15 PM
Lets just hope that EG counter-attacks by not matching the offer but to do what he did last year and bring in another tough juice! Better not to match and let this deal backfire on the Knicks.
July 31st, 2006 at 6:19 AM
I think the Wizards should only match the offer is Jared wants to stay in Washington. The news articles all say that he wants out. His choice is obviously all about the money. No player in his right mind would want to leave the Wizards and sign with the Knicks!
July 31st, 2006 at 6:26 AM
Wizards, please hold onto Jared, no matter what it takes. The team is much better and Jared had a lot to do with that. Just remember the surprised, “what happened?” look on Labron’s face “both” times Jared came from behind and smacked the ball out of Labron’s hands. I can see more of that. But, if money talks and he wants to walk, it’s his mistake.
July 31st, 2006 at 11:15 AM
I like JJ. But if a guy wants to go play for the Knicks for 1 or 2 million more than he’ll make playing for the Wizards, I say let him go. Come on, it’s the Knicks! And his contract has a 5-year no-trade clause? ha ha. Might as well go to a well-paid jail.
August 5th, 2006 at 8:45 AM
I look for jeffries to go to the knicks. The knicks needs someone that can score easily and lead him to the playoffs.
July 6th, 2007 at 12:34 PM
He’s a Flop
