Game Day Houston

4:50 AM EST….Dave Johnson checking in……Back on the road tonight to play the Rockets here in Houston. As noted on the BLOG yesterday, the Wizards went through their first full practice with Randy Wittman as head coach. Wittman has said without a lot practice time between games, he will keep things simple. There will be tweaks and Wittman will make adjustments in time outs, but within reason. Tonight’s opponent the Rockets just had their seven-game winning streak snapped in a loss to the Bucks at home. It was against the Rockets that the Wizards scored over 100 points for the first time this season.  It was the game that in some ways re-started John Wall’s season. Wall’s 38 points willed the Wizards  into a competitive situation. The past is not the focus  and the Wizards will need to deal with several challenges.  The back court of Kyle Lowry and Kevin Martin is an explosive one and Luis Scola is one of the NBA’s most underrated players.

We invite you  to join the Blog party tonight. We start at 8:00 PM on the Washington Wizards Radio Network and 106.7 FM… Check  out our list of affiliates…http://www.nba.com/wizards/news/broadcasters.html

Thursday Practice Report

We just came out of Thursday’s practice and the mood seemed to be more upbeat after last night’s 92-75 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats. Today was the first full practice under new Head Coach Randy Wittman and although he said he was not happy about the current situation, he also said he believes that this team is better than what their record shows and wants to prove that.

We also saw new Assistant Coach Joe Connelly working with some of the Wizards big men on their post moves.

Connelly may be an unfamiliar name to some, but he is well known by many of the current Wizards players and has been specializing in player development for years. In fact, Connelly was here on the Verizon Center practice court less than 2 months ago working with players after the lockout ended and before training camp began.

We also heard from Nick Young before the team took off for Houston as he answered some questions about last night’s win and playing under a new Head Coach.

The Wizards will be looking to win two straight games for the first time this year when they play the Rockets tomorrow night in Houston at 8pm. You can watch the game on CSN, listen on 106.7 FM, or follow along with WashingtonWizards.com’s Live Chat which will be featured on the website.

Postgame Quotes – Wizards vs. Bobcats

WIZARDS HEAD COACH RANDY WITTMAN
On the team’s win:
“First of all, it feels a lot better than the other way. I told the guys when we came in the locker room that there is nothing to critique tonight. Let’s enjoy a victory. For these guys it has been a long-time coming, and for them to come out and play like we did tonight, it was great.”

On the team’s effort:
“We will have some execution problems until we can get farther along in the process of cleaning things up that we need to. The effort that they gave should become a constant. We were able to create fastbreak opportunities. We tried to get pace in the game and get quicker. I was really pleased with the overall effort.”

More on the team:
“I thought Kevin (Seraphin) came in and played great. Jan (Vesely) and Shelvin (Mack) came in and played great as well. Our bench played with excellent energy and guys gave us great minutes tonight.”

WIZARDS FORWARD ANDRAY BLATCHE
On the game:
“We’re the same team we’ve been. We just came out with a lot more effort and shared the ball. We played good team ball on offense and defense and things got going for us.”

On the team’s transition:
“It’s been very tough. Hopefully we can grow from this and realize what it took to win tonight and do it again next game… Coach told everyone what it was going to take to win and everyone went out and did exactly what he said.”

On the win:
“It felt great, definitely. I’m sure Randy felt great. We went out and shared the ball and got a lead. Once we got a lead, we were able to keep it and that was important.”

WIZARDS GUARD NICK YOUNG
On Wizards’ Head Coach Randy Wittman:
“Randy’s a great coach. He’s telling us to be up tempo and push the ball. His main thing is telling us to pressure the ball defensively.”

On the team’s transition:
“I got up and something was different this morning. I just try to listen to the coaches and work as hard as I can to help the team win. We did some good things tonight. We made some plays on offense and defense. It was a good team effort.”

WIZARDS GUARD JOHN WALL
On the game:
“We played hard and played good pressure defense. I think we ran the court well and played together as a team. We didn’t let the game get close in the third quarter when Charlotte made a run at us, which was important. We were able to stop their run and showed that we had trust in each other. Guys were cheering for each other so that was great to see. We will see this team again on Saturday, so it’s important we continue to stay focused.”

On Randy Wittman:
“Coach stressed that it was important for us to play the right way. He told us what our roles would be. We just had to go out there and play hard and play together. We did a lot of good things tonight. Guys made the extra pass and everyone got involved. It was a good team win.”

Game Day Bobcats

5:34 AM….Dave Johnson checking in. Monday night was not a good night and Tuesday was a difficult day. There is a lot of frustration and emotion that goes with a 2-15 start. Within the last week we were encouraged by games against the Thunder and Nuggets, but then discouraged by Monday’s 103-83 loss to the 76ers. It was yesterday that  Flip Saunders time as head coach came to an end. We sincerely wish him the best. He was always first class with me and Glenn.  Randy Wittman will be in charge starting with tonight’s game  against the Charlotte Bobcats. Let’s hope it’s the start of a consistent run for the team. That is not to say a crazy winning streak (although that would be nice) , but consistently competitive performances.

Game Day Philadelphia

5:27 AM….Dave Johnson checking in…..It’s on the 76ers tonight. It was good and bad yesterday. It was nice that the Wizards rallied from a 15-point deficit to briefly take a lead in the fourth quarter, but the problem was getting behind in the first place. The Wizards scored 29 points in the third quarter, but paid for a poor start to the quarter when the Celtics expanded their lead. It’s not about competing for the Wizards, but completing. Wizards’ head coach Flip Saunders:

“You have to close out with your defense. That’s how you close out games, and get some pushes up the floor and get some open floor stuff if you can. What you have to do is stay aggressive and flatten out the defense.”

The reboot of John Wall’s 2012 season started with the second half of the loss to the 76ers last Saturday at Verizon Center. Wall recovered from a 7-turnovers first half and really has not looked back. After that bad start against the 76ers, Wall only had 6 turnovers in the next ten quarter he played including a win over the Thunder.

As for tonight Wall believes:

“I think the way we are playing now we can make it a good game. They are a tough team to play against. They are athletic and have a deep bench. We just have to keep playing hard and give ourselves a chance in the fourth quarter.”
